The National Weather Service and the City of Sparks are asking businesses and residents to keep flood mitigation measures in place.

The Sparks Fire Department responded to an apartment fire, that broke out around 10pm last night, on Los Altos Boulevard.

Betting is legal here in Nevada but the majority of bets placed on the Super Bowl will be illegal.

The Amber alert initiated around 11:15 pm last night was cancelled at about 12:15 am.

Sparks Police have confirmed that two people were killed in a suspected drunk driving crash early this morning. A large four-door truck was driving west on Greenbrae when it ran through the stop sign at Rock Boulevard, hitting a small two-door sedan. A 28-year-old woman, identified as the driver of the sedan, was pronounced dead at the scene. An 18-year-old man, identified as a passenger of the truck, was found unresponsive and taken to Renown, where he died. The driver of the truck, identified as 22-year-old Jesus Rojo-Perez was taken to Renown for minor injuries, then arrested on two counts of driving under the influence causing death.

AAA would like to remind motorists to travel safely and drive drug- and alcohol-free when hitting the roads after the Superbowl.

An apartment fire broke out around 10pm last night, on Los Altos Boulevard at the Canyon Vista apartments. The first arrivers found an off duty Sparks Fire Captain on the balcony where the fire originated and the fire almost completely extinguished. The off duty Captain saw the blaze on his way home jumped into action. He scaled the outside of the apartment to the 2nd floor balcony where the fire was, rescued a dog from the balcony which he lowered down to neighbors. Those neighbors threw him an extinguisher, allowing him to put most of the fire out. On duty firefighters completed the extinguishment of the fire after they arrived.

Protestors gathered in downtown Reno today to protest President Trump's pick to run the Department of Education. The group held a rally in front of the federal building trying to get the attention of Senator Dean Heller, urging him to vote against nominee Betsy DeVos. The group says she lacks the expertise and experience needed for the job. The Senate is set to vote on the nomination February 7.

An Elko man who reportedly stole a woman’s purse last Wednesday, was caught shortly after spending a counterfeit bill. 21 year old Christian Collazo reportedly went into a casino and stole a woman’s purse that was near her while she gambled. After looking at the surveillance video, police recognized Collazo, and went to his residence to question him. When they arrived, they recovered the woman's missing purse, and everything inside the purse was there too. Police got a tip that Collazo had gone into another casino prior to the theft, convincing a bartender to break a bill that was later discovered counterfeit. Elko Police say they've had several calls recently about counterfeit $20's and $50's being passed around town, usually at casinos. An investigation is ongoing.

Sparks police say they have arrested 24 year old Carlos Garcia after they got a report from a resident on Express Street saying a man was robbing her house, and he was still inside. Officers say a chase began after they arrived and covered backyards and fences. Charges against Garcia include Domestic Battery, obstructing and resisting, and an outstanding warrant. Garcia was reportedly in the home with permission, but allegedly used force to take property. The victim suffered minor injuries.
