The Sierra Avalanche Center has issued a High Avalanche Warning for the Lake Tahoe area. Residents of the Crystal Bay and Incline Village areas are being asked to shelter in place during this snow event.

Northern Nevada's public safety responders have had some sleepless nights, dealing with the local flood emergency. And while the situation has improved greatly, and some of the danger is passed, no one should take it for granted, because there's more rain and snow in the forecast this week, and some streets are still covered with water.

Governor Brian Sandoval toured flood impacted areas, and in general seemed pleased by the proactive response taken by state, county and local emergency responders and managers, and the fact that most residents took the flood threat seriously.

Flood insurance is mandatory in designated flood zones, and homeowners buy it as part of their mortgage in Northern Nevada. It covers almost everything.

Sparks High School was opened to shelter evacuees in flood zones, and the American Red Cross and Animal Control were on hand to help residents and their pets. Those shelters are now closed.
