A small fire broke out at Sparks High School this morning.

The Sparks Fire Department responded to the report of a fire alarm at Sparks High School 9:30 this morning. They said the classroom where the alarm went off was filled with what appeared to be smoke. After additional investigation they found a wall mounted heater unit was putting out a large amount of steam. The heater unit had a ruptured steam line and there was no fire. Officials say school maintenance arrived and helped with shutting down the boiler unit and the power to the classroom. No injuries were reported.

Two Nevada Democrats are proposing to end the state's little-used death penalty. Assemblyman James Ohrenschall and state Sen. Tick Segerblom have requested a bill that would end capital punishment, meaning life without the possibility of parole would be the state's strongest punishment. The bill could come up for discussion when lawmakers reconvene in the spring. Segerblom said the death penalty and the appeal process that comes with it is too expensive. Nevada has 81 people on death row but hasn't executed anyone since 2006.

The City of Fallon is reflecting on a hugely successful economic year, and says the plan is to become one of the best Northern Nevada communities to live and work in, for 2017.

State officials say Nevada's public high school graduation rate is up almost 3 percentage points from the previous year. It's still one of the worst in the country but it's getting better. The Nevada Department of Education says the graduation rate for the Class of 2016 is 73.6 percent. That's up from 70.8 percent in 2015. English language learners were the group that showed the greatest improvement. Their graduation rate rose 10 percentage points, even though it remains one of the lowest at 42.6 percent. Nevada's graduation rate was better than only New Mexico and the District of Columbia last year.

A Washoe County jury has convicted a Reno man of 39 counts of child sexual assault and lewdness. 45-year-old Valentin Corrales, is being held on a $3.6 million bond and was found guilty of 12 counts of lewdness with a child under 14, 13 counts of sexual assault with a child under 14 , six counts of sexual assault with a child under 16, and eight counts of sexual assault. Corrales was arrested in March 2015 on the first of the charges. Each of the felonies carries a potential life term in prison. Sentencing is set for March.
