A career criminal convicted of killing a customer during a Reno bank robbery has been sentenced to life in prison.

68-year-old Van McDuffie was found guilty August 17, 2016 of robbery with a dangerous weapon resulting in death and use of a firearm during a crime of violence causing death, according to the United States Attorney's Nevada office. He was sentenced December 5 in federal court.

October 16, 2013, McDuffie pulled up to a Bank of America on South Virginia Street in a cab, walked in and started flashing a gun. He shot 80-year-old Bob Sperry in the chest after Sperry, a bank customer, told McDuffie to "get out of here." An off-duty police officer chased McDuffie to a nearby bus stop, where McDuffie was arrested.

McDuffie had been arrested more than 60 times in the last five decades.

Two people are in custody after a bank robbery in Truckee Saturday. Truckee Police say, they responded to the robbery at the Bank of America on Donner Pass Road on the morning of December 3, 2016. About 10, a man walked in, showed a handgun and ordered employees to put cash in a bag. He ran off before police got there. Truckee Police detectives, working with the FBI, quickly learned the name of a possible suspect, 19-year-old Alex Frasier of Reno. Police say he was believed to be involved along with a bank employee, 20-year-old Grant Schaeffer, also of Reno. Schaeffer was interviewed and arrested at the bank, and booked into the Nevada County Jail in Truckee for Robbery and Conspiracy. December 5, FBI special agents and Redding Police officers found and arrested Frasier in the Redding-area for Robbery and Conspiracy. Frasier will be taken back to Nevada County, where he will await prosecution.

Sparks Police Department Detectives say they have found missing Kristy Porter safe and not in any danger. Police found Porter at about 5:00 this evening. She was reported missing on November 24th. Twenty-eight year old Porter reportedly explained to detectives that she voluntarily chose to not return home after leaving the Barrels and Bites event at the Peppermill 11. She had been attending the event with her husband. Police are not releasing any further details.
