Boston struck early in this one. In the 1st, Masataka Yoshida singled home Trevor Story to grab a 1-0 lead. A’s answered in the 2nd via a Darrel Hernaiz sacrifice fly, only for Boston to retake the lead in the same inning courtesy of a Rob Refsnyder solo homer. The A’s then erupted in the 5th—it started with a walk, then a couple big hits, including another Hernaiz knock, to push across three runs and take the lead. Boston, largely quiet through most of the middle innings, finally rallied back in the 6th: Yoshida reached on an infield single, and Trevor Story plated the tying run with a single to center. The game stayed deadlocked through the 9th, both teams getting chances, but resting on mistakes and indecision. 

In the 10th, with the game hanging on every pitch, Boston managed to wrench out the win. They executed a bunt, followed by a ground ball, and Nate Eaton scored on a fielder’s choice. Key struggles for the A's included failure to shut down scoring after that 5th inning burst, bullpen mixups, and defensive or situational misreads that let Boston stay alive. For Red Sox fans, this was a win that felt like a relief more than validation—but they got it done. For Kotsay, tonight’s game provided what he hoped would be momentum, but the shaky execution when it mattered makes you question whether his decision-making cost them what should’ve been a more comfortable victory.
