    Coaching Development
This week on Krush Performance we begin our year long look at coaching and coaching development.
We can all think back to a coach, teacher, boss or mentor who has impacted our lives – for good or bad. Coaching is a great responsibility.
If we are going to truly influence learning and development the key is to develop great Coaching.
From the grass roots entry levels right up to the highest levels of performance parents, teachers, bosses, managers and coaches are the keys to quality learning and development.
In 2017 we will be scanning the Globe to look at the top coaching development programs; we will talk with some of the great coaches of our time and the athletes who have learned from them all in an effort to understand what it is to be a Great Coach.
This week we begin our investigation into coaching and coaching development with a look at Canada and the Canadian sport system. Canada is a world leading in sport science and athlete development and running parallel to one of the most innovative athlete development programs ever developed – the long Term Athlete Development program – is the Canadian NCCP: National Coaching Certification Program.
Wayne Parro, senior coaching consultant and advisor to the Coaching Association of Canada joins us to discuss the Canadian system.
Motivation is a big part of coaching, but we are very off base in our understanding of what motivates us. We go back to a fantastic conversation with author, speaker and television host Dan Pink to review what science knows about motivation and what sport and business actually does and we’ll discuss the three elements of true motivation.
Join us, get motivated and share this episode of Krush Performance as we begin look into coaching & coaching development. And, let us know if you have question or a topic you would like us to investigate. If we like your idea we may dedicate a segment or entire show to your topic.

  • Krush Performance: Specialization & Talent Identification
    Specialization and Talent Identification
This week on Krush Performance, we look at Talent ID and Specialization in sport.
Is it a good idea to specialize early or is it better sample different activities and specialize later in the developmental process?
When we look at talent development and skill acquisition, it seems logical to totally immerse yourself in the endeavor you want to master but there is compelling research showing that early specialization, though it may appear to be beneficial in the short term, can really limit top end performance.
We talk with Dr. Joe Baker of York University and Dr. Jean Cote, Professor of Sports Psychology, as we take a good hard look at the pitfalls of specialization and what we don’t really know about talent ID.

  • Krush Performance: Dr. Jon Kolb & The Sugar Conspiracy w/Ian Leslie
Maximizing Human Performance & The Krush WAR on SUGAR looks at the “The Sugar Conspiracy”
Are we at the biological ceiling of human performance? We have a great understanding when it comes to the physical development side of human performance: faster, higher, stronger. No problem! So, where are the next major break troughs going to come from?
We talk with Dr. Jon Kolb, the Director of Sport Science, Medicine, and Innovation for Own The Podium Program in Canada, and look at how they are focusing and utilizing the sport sciences to help their athletes compete on the world stage.
Then, the Krush War on Sugar continues with a segment looking at “The Sugar Conspiracy,” a great article by author and journalist, Ian Leslie. We look back on the history of sugar in our diet and how early warnings regarding the dangers of consuming too much sugar in our diets were ignored, shunned, and swept under the rug only to resurface decades later with serious science that indicates that for many it may be too late.
This is an important episode of Krush Performance as we address two of our passions: Human Maximum Performance and The Krush War on Sugar!
Make sure to share this show with everyone you know as we work to spread the good word and help you truly understand what it’s like to think like an athlete.

This week on Krush Performance, we a look at what it takes to build a performance culture.

Today, we take a look behind the scenes of two incredible developmental cultures, a college hockey team that went undefeated (36-0) and one of the most successful high school baseball academies in the world.
We’ll talk with Les McTavich, Head Coach and Director of Operations at the Vauxhall Academy of Baseball, and Mike Gabinet, former head coach of the Nait Ooks collegiate hockey team in Edmonton who is now Associate Coach with Nebraska Omaha. The Ooks went 36-0 last season and we’re going to find out what went on behind the scenes of this incredible season that allowed this team to go undefeated.

  • Krush Performance: Olivier Niggli, Director General of WADA
The War on Drugs in Sport with the Director General of the World Anti Doping Agency & Injury Prevention and Improved Performance
This week on Krush Performance, we have a look at where we are at in the war on drugs in sport as we speak with Olivier Niggli, the Director General of WADA, to see what has happened since the fiasco leading up to Rio and the aftermath that brought WADA under fire.
WADA has since hosted a very important think tank meeting and we’ll see where the sporting world is at in terms of supporting the sport anti doping governing body.
Also, the 2017 Prohibited List is out. Who is responsible in the end for what goes into an athlete’s body?
The athlete most certainly but the entire performance team has to be on the ball as well.
Also, how safe are supplements? What is WADA’s stance on them?
It’s predicted the sport supplement industry will generate close to $55 bilion by 2020 and the entire dietary supplement industry is projected to reach a staggering $278 Billion by 2024 but it’s a dangerous and vastly unregulated injury so we caution all athletes to proceed with extreme caution in obtaining and using sport supplements.
The Krush Performance Question of the Day: Are we doing enough in the fight on drugs in sport?
Later in the show, we’ll have a look at injury prevention in sport and how yoga is not only having an impact on reducing injuries, but when done right, it can improve performance.
We will be joined by Yoga Master Dana Santas of MobilityMaker.com to discuss how her program and yoga in general is becoming a major part of sport performance programs.

  • Krush Performance: Controlling Your Brain
Controlling Your Brain & Helping Kids Perform
On this episode of Krush Performance, we look into the mental game of human performance and supporting the development of our most precious commodity, our kids.
Many professional organizations are now looking for new and innovative methods for pushing player and employee performance to new levels and information technology may just be the big break through that takes human performance to the next level.
We have a very good grip on the physical side of training and development.
In our performance programs, our priorities for every athlete and organization we work with are as follows:
    – Rest & Recovery & Sleep
    – Nutrition / Hydration
    – Posture and ROM
    – Then for our athletes movement for everyone else task specific training.
Once all of this is set, we can then start looking at the performance side of development. Way too often, we see athletes, parents, and coaches want to skip steps and jump way ahead of where they are at. I can promise you this, it’s virtually impossible to reach your true potential if you hop over critical developmental steps.
Sometimes focusing on long term benefits means taking a step back, even a couple of steps, in order to rebuild and move forward towards a bright, bright future…..
So as we have a grip on the physical side (stronger, powerful, speed, agility, and skill development), there is emerging new technology that is now allowing us to tap into and train one of the most elusive aspects of human performance, the mind.
We talk with registered psychologist John Stevenson of Zone Performance about information technology that provides real time feedback on how your mind is operating. Yes, you can actually now see how well your brain is operating while performing a task and with the feedback learn how to better control it.
It has been around for awhile but the science is being refined and what we can now do and see is incredible. It’s incredibly powerful when it comes to human performance in sport, business, school, and life in general.
Also, are you teaching your kids the right stuff? We have a very important conversation with Dr. Jaques Dallaire about his book, “Helping Kids Perform: Mental Skills That Every Parent, Teacher and Coach Should Master.”
It’s time to break the cycle and push into the new age.
Share this show with everyone you know who is looking to get better at what they do, these are two important conversations.
