  • Krush Performance: Krush’s War On Sugar During Halloween
Krush’s War On Sugar During Halloween
This week, the Krush Performance “War on Sugar” rages on just in time for Halloween.
In this episode, we are joined by Loreen Wales of Revive Wellness and Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, founder of Ottawa’s nonsurgical Bariatric Institute and author of the Krush “Must Read” book, “The Diet Fix”.
We are going to look further into the devastating impact sugar is having on our daily health. However, we are not going at this like the Grinch that Stole Halloween. Quite the opposite actually.
Go have fun! Fill up those candy bags! That’s what Halloween is all about but let’s turn Halloween into a teachable moment for our kids.
We’ll go over some great strategies for dealing with the pounds and pounds of candy and how you can get a really solid sugar discussion going with your kids and also talk about what we should be doing the rest of the year.
We’ll look at a fantastic new corporate health & wellness program and we’ll look at the upside or downside of a sugar tax as the Halloween season is now upon us.
Halloween is an industry unto itself. How much money do you think is spent each year on Halloween? It’s a MASSIVE number and we’ll let you know in this “War on Sugar” episode of Krush Performance.
    Happy Halloween!!!!

  • Krush Performance: Top 5 Things to Watch this NHL Season
Krush Top 5 Things to Watch this NHL Season
This is one of our favorite shows: Our top things to watch in sport. We try to get this in at the start of every professional season and today we are going to kick off the NHL season with our list of teams and players to watch this season.
The list is not necessarily based on who is going to win, though we may make a call for what its worth, but there are so many great story lines and a lot to learn about elite performance by just watching the pro’s perform.
At the start of the MLB season our “things to watch” list went very well this year. The Chicago Cubs were #1 on my watch list this season Joe Maddon / Theo Epstein were the big attraction there. The Kansas City Royals, could they repeat and GM Dayton Moore has rebuilt that organization can they perform again this season? The Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees & A-Rod and the Astros with their big acquisitions & talented young players were all on our list.
BUT, to show you just how much sport is the real Reality TV – un scripted – unplanned and for the most part unpredictable – Cleveland was nowhere on my radar!! Incredible! What a run for Cleveland this year.
So the Krush Question of the day, in light of our topic of “What to watch this NHL season,” what do you think is the most important factor in determining organizational? Some things come to mind: Past Success – Talent – Culture – Depth – Development – Coaching – Ownership- GM ……. What do you think?
Maybe you throw out a couple of things but if you were to choose, what do you think is the most important factor in organizational success?

  • Krush Performance: Grit w/Angela Duckworth
GRIT: The Power of Passion & Perseverance with Angela Duckworth
This week, we are talking GRIT & the intangibles – those invisible traits that exist and play an important roll in making us who we are.
When we are looking to identify & evaluate talent or potential what is the most important piece of the puzzle?

    * Experience – the body of work?
    * Skill evaluation – things like a combine performance or entrance exam?
    * Talent & Skill – in game evaluation / scouting reports or work reviews?

In sport, you can see what an athlete is capable of while playing in the present setting or via player evaluations like a combine or try out. In work or school, you can get references, interview peers, bosses and teachers (we do the same in sport).
In fact, there is now as much work going into background checks (not just the criminal kind) as there is on skill evaluation and there are times when the value of a person’s intangible traits precede their skill level as teams and organizations try to decide if an athlete, student, or employee is right for their organization.
We have a really good idea of developing skill sets and physical ability but the intangibles a person possesses seem set in stone. However, what if I told you that we all have the ability to train, develop, and master the intangibles! What if I told you the intangibles are trainable?
This is where today’s conversation comes in.
The intangibles – those things that exist behind the curtain – the traits that make us who we are.
Some call it Character – but I think it is much more than that.
It’s Aggressiveness, patience, or self-control. It’s compete levels, intelligence, coach ability it’s perseverance, mindset, & GRIT.
We are joined by Angela Duckworth, an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, Scientific Director of The Character Lab, and Author of the Bestseller, “GRIT: The Power of Passion & Perseverance.”
    We’ll discuss:

    * What exactly is “character?”
    * Is grit the character trait that trumps all others?
    * How does grit trump talent and IQ when it comes to success?

I look forward to your comments & if you like what you hear please pass this on to everyone you know. It’s an important conversation.

  • Krush Performance: Preventing Knee & ACL Injuries w/Doug Gilroy
Injury Prevention – Knees & ACLs w/Doug Gilroy
In sports, injury prevention is king.
This is why we are so crazy about screening, planning, and stressing rest, recovery, sleep, and nutrition.
Today, we look at knee injuries and the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) with therapist Doug Gilroy.
When an ACL tear ended the season of Vikings’ quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, I knew we had to look into the topic of injury prevention. Bridgewater’s blown ACL was a non-contact injury.
    Check out these stats:

    * It’s estimated that ACL injuries make up 30% of all sports injuries.
    * 70% of ACL injuries are non-contact.
    * Female athletes are nine times more likely to tear an ACL than male athletes.

The good news, depending which study or data you look at, is knee injury prevention programs have been shown to reduce the risk & incidence of ACL injuries by 46-90%.
    Thanks for listening!

  • Krush Performance: Head Injuries w/Dr. Martin Mrazik
Head Injuries In Sports: An Ounce Of Prevention
You know the old saying about an ounce of prevention? In sports, it can be worth hundreds of millions!
Recent reports tell us the following:

    * Between 2009 to 2012 injuries cost NHL teams an estimated $218 million per year with a salary loss to players of $42.8 million/year.
    * In 2014, knee injuries cost the NBA $358 Million.
    * The overall cost of injuries in Major League Baseball in 2014 was $1.4 billion.
    * In 2015, the average cost of player injuries in the top four soccer leagues was $12.4 million per team (10%-30% of player payroll lost to injury).

The interesting thing about this is that a good number of the injuries we’ve seen are preventable!
Today, we speak with Krush favorite, Dr. Martin Mrazik, Associate Professor Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Alberta in Canada, to discuss the steps that have been taken to improve player safety and reduce the risk of head injuries in sport.
Have we done enough and what impact have some of the innovative and new programs as well as rule changes had on improving player safety?
We find out in today’s episode of Krush Performance.

  • Krush Performance: Managing Player Performance
Managing Player Performance – Short Term & Long Term Planning
On the show today, we are looking at managing player performance.
We’ll talk with NHL certified player agent Manny Schmidt of Link Management International and there is a lot to consider when we look at everything that impacts a players preparation and in game performance. For example, take the Taylor Hall trade this summer or any player move for that matter. What does a player have to go through in an organizational change? Change of home, city, coach, teammates….the list goes on.
With any player move, there is so much that goes on behind the scenes that the team, the agent, and the player have to work diligently to limit distraction and allow the player to focus on training and competing.
What about moves in the minor leagues of professional sport? As players move up, move down, get released and then resign, there can be a real yo-yo effect and that doesn’t even include the travel inside of the competitive schedule.
Just imagine changing teams several time in a season. How do you maintain game performance?
It’s not always the best idea to play up. Too many times, we have seen young players moved up to only sit or fail. There is nothing wrong with being a stud and mastering the game at the level you are at.
Today, we’ll look at when the right time is to move up, to play up , and how to know if you are ready.
