  • Krush Performance: Teamwork, Leadership, & Performance Cultures
Teamwork, Leadership, & Performance Cultures w/Yvonne Camus
We are joined in Studio by Yvonne Camus, a High Performance Specialist, former Eco-Challenge Participant, and one of North America’s most trusted speakers on Teamwork & Performance in sport, Business & in life. She is also the COO of the very successful and award winning World Heath Clubs in Edmonton, Alberta.
Yvonne gives us her take and some great insights into teamwork and building performance environments.
It’s a very interesting time in sport:
The MLB All-Star Game is right around the corner. We can look at the standings and probably have a very interesting discussion on team performance cultures.
The MLB, NHL, and NBA drafts are all past as organizations plan and build for the future. We assume these plans are well laid out, thoughtful, and strategic but we know what happens when we assume things…
In my opinion, the biggest story in all of sports right now is the Rio Olympics and all of the issues facing these games.
So I want to get to our question of the day right off the top:
Knowing what we know right now & if you were an athlete, coach or parent of an athlete, do you compete or not?
Our Twitter Poll from @jeffkrush had 76% of people saying they would not compete in Rio.

Chasing Down The Dream – The Long Haul & Performance Nutrition
When do you quit – step down change direction?
It’s different for everyone and I believe that too many athletes give up way too early.
So today, I wanted to talk about chasing down the dream. When do you call it quits & what the hell are you supposed to do to create opportunity for yourself so you can break into the next level?
We’ll talk with Krush Performance athlete, pitcher Tyler Vavra, about his career to this point and why he is not giving up the chase. It’s a great story of perseverance. Will he succeed? Can he make it to professional ball? Time will tell.
Then, we’ll talk performance nutrition with Ricky Ng, – sport nutrition expert from Revivewellness.ca.
Ricky has his International Olympic Committee Diploma in Sport Nutrition, is a Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics, and a Nutrition Consultant for the Edmonton Oilers of the NHL.
Nutrition is the #2 priority in our developmental/performance model and it can be all powerful if you know what you are doing. However, there is so much information and misinformation out there that it can be confusing and even over whelming at times.
I’m here to put your mind at ease, It’s not that hard but you need to start with the basics. I’m really looking forward to this conversation as we help you push the limits of your performance right there on Krush Performance.

  • Krush Performance: Brian St. Pierre of Precision Nutrition
    Performance Nutrition
Your Mom was right!!!!! You are what you eat and there is no escaping poor nutrition no matter what you do!
Today, we talk with Brian St Pierre of Precision Nutrition and look at the Precision approach to performance eating for sport, business, school life in general.
When it comes to performance, we build all of our programs around rest and recovery. It’s the measure for the amount of work we are able to get done over a period of time. Inside of our R&R programs….Sleep is King!
Then, you have nutrition. Again, there is no escaping poor nutrition. It affects everything you do and the implication in the area of health and wellness is a big issue!
What if I told you that diet and weight related diseases have taken over from smoking as the number one preventable causes of death? With about 2/3 of the population dealing with weight management issues, you would think we’d have it all figured out but it’s not for lack of effort.
It was recently shown that of people with significant weight issues, 60% have tried to lose weight more than six times and of those who have tried more than six times, 34% have tried 20 or more times and 66% have lost count.
The fact is….. according to Dr. Freedhoff, 90% of all diets fail. DIETS DON’T WORK!!!!! That info is very concerning when you consider that the North American weight loss industry generates over $60 billion dollars per year.
    So what can you do?
First, exercise regularly. It’s a critical component for over all health but when it comes to making a difference in your weight, exercise is a distant second to diet choices.
Exercise can only influence 20% of your over all modifiable weight where your diet and daily diet choices influence the other 80%.
    Second, eat right!
Learn how in this episode of Krush Performance.

Today, we are going to look at the power of the mind in sport and take a good & hard look at the power of the mind and the area of Sport Psychology with John Stevenson from Zone Performance.
We have a very good grasp on skill and technical & tactical development. We know about strength & conditioning. If you want to get faster, jump higher, or be stronger, no problem! We can make that happen. We have a very good grasp on nutrition & hydration but I believe we are just on the frontier side of harnessing the power of the mind when it comes to human performance.
We’ll also look at the innovative programs that are using bio & neural feedback to help athletes get control and stay in control of their mindset and mental state and the performance out comes are incredible!!!
Later in the show, I run through the top priorities for athlete development.

  • Krush Performance: Match Fixing w/Declan Hill Follow Up
Match Fixing with Declan Hill: Where are we at with FIFA and Professional Tennis? Will the Rio Olympics be Cancelled?
Today, we take a look at one of the dark sides of sport. A side that may be more concerning than any other as it strikes right at the heart of sport integrity. It is thought to be worse than an athlete cheating by using banned substances or performance enhancers worse yet than an athlete or ref betting on games.
    It’s Match Fixing.
Is there anything worse in sport? Players deliberately throwing matches or curbing effort to control an out come?
I wanted to check in to see if FIFA’s new leadership is fairing any better than the previous Ousted corrupt & controversial leadership group that nearly ran the sport into the ground! With pay offs – bribes & match fixing.
Also, late in 2015, the tennis world erupted once again with serious acquisitions of match fixing in that sport. Is it real and if so, how high up does it go? Grand Slam level?
The Games in Brazil are faced with one of the most serious issues a major sporting event can be faced with – Public & Athlete Health – Should the Rio Games be postpones – moved or Canceled?
The Zika Virus / polluted water are at the epicenter of the issues. Exactly how serious are the health risks?
Today, we ask those questions and more with one of the world’s leading experts on match fixing, Declan Hill, journalist, academic, consultant & author. Declan is one of the foremost experts on the topic of match fixing & corruption in sport.

  • Krush Performance: Specialization In Sport w/Dr. David Bell
    Specialization In Sport
In this episode of Krush Performance, a very important conversation as we tear into specialization in sport.
Question: Do you think it is a good idea to specialize early or not?
We look at the success of sporting greats like Tiger Woods & the Williams Sisters and we think they did it so it must be the way to go. Then, you have to look at the majority of great athletes and when you do you’ll find that most come from multi sport back grounds.
Bo Jackson: Any sport he wanted!
    Steven Nash: Soccer
    Jerome Iginla: Baseball
Jim Thorpe: Pro football (13 yrs), MLB (7 yrs), Pro Basketball (2 yrs), 1912 Olympic gold in the Pentathlon & Decathlon
They don’t make ‘em like they used to!!!
On the surface, to specialize makes sense. If you have a young athlete that loves a sport, you want to support that with everything you have. Parents feel they need to give their kids an edge and focusing on a single sport is the way to go but could it be hurting your child’s athletic future? The evidence says yes! There is a big downside to specializing early!
Today, we talk with Dr. David Bell, Assistant Professor at the Department of Kinesiology Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Wisconsin. He is also the Director of the Wisconsin Injury In Sport Laboratory.
They have done some great research on the topic of early specialization in sport we’ll look at their findings and get their recommendations and guidelines for what we should be doing & thinking when it comes to participation in organized sport
Later in the show, we’ll look at why kids Love sport & why the drop out rates are the highest they have ever been.
We’ll look at the science and evidence that shows that specialization not only increases risk of injury, burnout and dropout rates but it can also greatly limit an athletes long term ceiling of potential.
When it comes to injuries in sport, here are some of the things we know:
    1) In the NFL, 70% of recent ACL injuries are non-contact injuries
    2) In hockey, the majority of injuries, including concussions, happen in the third period.
    3) Specialization has resulted in an increase of overuse injuries, burnout, & dropout rates have skyrocketed.
    4) Dehydration impacts decision making & reaction time.
    5) Athletes who experience two injuries that cause missed time in a single season have a 40% higher dropout rate than athletes who experience one or none.
    6) Sport injuries made up 35% of all reported injuries!
The TOP 3 most common injuries roll out like this:
    3) Tennis or Golf Elbow: Around 7% of all sports injuries are elbow injuries.
    2) Shoulder Injury: Shoulder injuries, including dislocations, sprains and strains, make up 20% of all sports injuries.
    1) Patellofemoral Syndrome: About 55% of all sports injuries are knee injuries & make up 25% of problems treated by orthopedic surgeons
