  • Krush Performance: Off Season Hockey w/Manny Schmidt & Rick Carriere
Off Season Hockey: What Should You Be Thinking!
On this episode of Krush Performance, we are talking off season hockey – one of the most important times of the year for hockey players at all levels. We are joined in studio by Krush Favorites, Manny Schmidt of Link Management International / Certified NHL player agent and Rick Carriere, the Senior Director of Player Development for the Edmonton Oilers.
We talk pro player development and how they handle their players in the off season and how they direct player development. We’ll also look at the impact of early specialization in sport & especially in the game of hockey. We know early specialization results in increased injury, higher burn out & drop out rates.
For many players, the off-season is well underway while others are going deep into the play-offs and have to be masters of athlete management. What should you be thinking about this of season? How important is it to get away from the rink & off of the ice?

  • Krush Performance: Talent Is Overrated with Geoff Colvin
    Talent Is Overrated
One of the largest commodities in the world today is ability and talent. Unfortunately, great ability and talent is also one of the rarest commodities.
What is the difference between top performers and the average Joe Six Pack? Why do some achieve and most do not?
Today, we visit with Geoff Colvin. He’s a longtime editor and columnist for FORTUNE and an award-winning thinker, author, broadcaster, and speaker on today’s most significant trends in business. Hee has become one of America’s sharpest and most respected commentators on leadership, globalization, wealth creation, the infotech revolution, and related issues.
In 2006, Geoff wrote a powerful article “What it Takes to be Great.” The response to this article was so profound that it lead to one of the leading books focused on talent and human development, “Talent is Overrated.”
Business – Music – Sport – the concept of talent is a human thing – not specific to any one endeavor.
Where does talent come from? Are we born with Talent? Is it a Natural? Is Talent learned?
How important then is environment in the development of Talent? Your friends, parents, coaches, mentors, teachers, bosses and what about the culture of performance?
    Is Greatness Up For Grabs?
We ask these questions and more as we investigate: What it Truly Takes to be Great in the episode of Krush Performance.

Is the sugar in your diet Killing you? Based on recent research it does not look good and SUGAR is a major culprit!!

    • And there’s much much more
Cost to Health Care – could the strain of obesity and diabetes alone destroy every health care system on the planet? According to a major new series in the Lancet, one of the world’s top medical journals, the unprecedented obesity rates are a “time bomb” of future burdens on health care systems but global efforts to reverse the epidemic are failing.

    • Now, we eat that much every 7 hours.
    • In 1822, we consumed 6.3 pounds per person per year
    • Today, some reports estimate that we are consuming as much as 150lbs/yr

There is a massive disconnect between what science knows about motivation and what we actually do. Find out as we talk with Dan Pink Author of his best selling book – DRIVE: The Surprising Truth about what Motivates Us.
We also look at the explosive and controversial topic of match Fixing in professional sport.
If you haven’t heard much about it, it’s real and it may just run deeper and higher than you might think
We caught up with Declan Hill, author of “The Fix” and his new book, “The Insider’s Guide to Match-Fixing in Football,” to discuss his dangerous and alarming investigation into the inner workings of a multi billion dollar illegal gambling market that reaches well beyond the realms of soccer and all the way down to the lower levels of amateur sport.

  • Krush Performance: MLB Opening Day & Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan
    MLB Opening Day
Today on Krush Performance, Opening Day is behind us and the MLB season is underway – we’re talking baseball.
We are going to look at the Annual Krush list of teams & players to follow this season – we’ll look at why they are worthy of your interest and we’ll use them as a reference point for performance in the sport
Krush Favorite Donovan Santas, the Head of Strength and Conditioning for the Blue Jays, joins me about their new player performance program
We’ll also be joined by Jeff Passan MLB columnist for Yahoo Sports & Author & of his new Book “The Arm: Inside the Billion-Dollar Mystery of the Most Valuable Commodity in Sports” that hit the shelves early April.
Pitching is the most valuable commodity in all of sport – the 30 Major League teams will spend more than $1.5 billion dollars on pitching this year – Believe me, injury prevention is KING!!!
In one recent study that looked at injury trends in Major League Baseball from 1998-2015, it was found that an average teams spent over $423 million & a total of $7. 618 billion over these 18 years. Surprisingly, nearly 39% of all surgeries occurred in the last 5 years – that’s $2.9 billion spent on injuries in the last 5 years!!!!
When you consider that 25% of major league pitchers and 15% of minor league pitchers have had a surgery, you get the idea that injury prevention is not just important, it is CRITICAL to winning & losing! In fact, if you look back on recent history, there were more Tommy John surgeries in 2014 than the entire decade of the 1990’s!
As we learn more, become smarter and understand more about athlete development and performance along with the amount of money being spent on players, you would think we would be doing much better at keeping players healthy but the injury rates continue to sky rocket as do the salaries & pay rolls.
This season, the average salary in Major League baseball hits $4.4 million. There is a record 127 major league players earning $10 million or more this year – with The Dodger’s lefty Clayton Kershaw earning the league’s highest salary at $33 million. According to the USA Today’s, MLB will have 36 players earning more than $20 millon this season.
The Dodgers and Yankees are the only two teams that have pay rolls over $200 million this season but here is an interesting thing. According to one report, the Dodgers will spend $113 million on players on the DL, former players now playing with other teams, and key players in the minor leagues. Keep in mind, that leaves only $146 million spent on the active roster – so the payroll numbers can be deceiving.
Regardless – the Dodgers will spend more on players who are not playing for them than 14 other teams will spend on their entire payrolls!
So if you have a young athlete in the family – you may want to start encouraging an interest in baseball & to be more precise Pitching.
It’s great work if you can get it.
