KZMU News heard the sound of silence at the entrance to Arches during the first weekend of its closure in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Vehicles, bikes, and pedestrians are now prohibited from entering any park areas at Arches and Canyonlands National Parks – that means campgrounds, trails, backcountry, and roads. Plus later in the news, the Navajo Nation initiates a curfew aimed to slow the spread of COVID-19 and protect critical healthcare resources. And, an interview with Andy Smith, director of Grand County EMS Special Service District about how their essential workforce is keeping the community safe during this health crisis.

  • News Extra - Gov Herbert says 'stay safe, stay home,' Arches and Canyonlands close
On Friday evening, Utah Governor Gary Herbert issued a directive across the state – “stay safe and stay home.” Although this is not a shelter in place order, Utahans are now expected to stay home whenever possible. The directive includes specific instructions for all individuals, including those determined to be high-risk. Read the directive here: https://www.kzmu.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Stay-Safe-Stay-Home-Directive.pdf

All vehicles, bikes, and pedestrians are prohibited from entering any park areas, including campgrounds, trails, backcountry, and roads. Any recreational use of the parks is in violation of this closure. The National Park Service says they are working with federal, state, and local authorities to closely monitor the COVID-19 pandemic.
