The Trump Administration approved new management plans last week for the reduced Bears Ears and Grand Staircase Escalante National Monuments. Critics were quick to denounce the monument management plans, which came two years after President Trump drastically reduced their boundaries. Indigenous-led Utah Diné Bikéyah dismissed the Bears Ears plan as part of a broader problem that leaves Indigenous Peoples out of decisions for sacred lands. And later, Public Lands Corner takes a stroll down memory lane, Moab style.

The Grand County Council has joined Moab City in unanimous opposition to proposed oil and gas leasing in the Sand Flats Recreation Area. The nomination of two parcels sitting on top of Moab’s sole source aquifer has drawn wide local opposition in recent weeks, notably from those typically in support of mineral extraction projects. Plus, the county council unanimously sent a letter of support to a Utah legislator to create a state park in the Dalton Wells and Willow Springs area, aiming to protect the landscape while maintaining current recreational opportunities. And finally, our partners at the Moab Sun News have a report on a lack of communication over UDOT’s Highway 191 widening project frustrating local business owners.

Since 1996, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation has intercepted naturally occurring briny water from entering the Dolores River and injected it into an underground well. As that well nears the end of its “useful life,” officials are investigating alternatives. They’ve recently extended a deadline for public comment on the future of the Paradox Valley Unit Salinity Control Program. We hear from Moab’s Colorado River Waterkeeper on how their proposed solutions might shape up basin-wide. And later in the news – many communities across the West are grappling with low, stagnant wages coupled with fast, rising home prices. Our partners at KDNK report on how the shortage of affordable housing options is affecting Carbondale, Colorado, where the average single family home price just topped one-million dollars.
