The 2018 water year featured an intense drought that stuck to the Four Corners region. The snowpack was weak, the reservoirs didn’t fill, and the dryness made combating wildfires even more difficult. Last week, KZMU News reported on a study that found the drought was directly tied to the effects of human caused climate change. This week, our partners at KSJD in Cortez, Colorado speak with the study's lead author to understand how researchers approached data and what it could indicate for the future.

In his opening session remarks at the Utah Legislature, Speaker of the House Brad Wilson named reducing Utah’s suicide rate as one of his top priorities for the year. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, but the eighth in Utah. According to our partners at Utah Public Radio, local health departments are currently working towards prevention by utilizing the QPR Institute’s ‘Question, Persuade, Refer’ method. And later in the news, Public Lands Corner features an in-depth look at changes to obtaining a river permit for running Westwater Canyon, as well as a proposed fee increase for Desolation Canyon river permits.

  • Get An Earful - Tensions in the Local Healthcare Community
On the extended newscast, we speak with Moab Sun News editor Maggie McGuire about tensions over a health clinic planned for the San Juan County side of Spanish Valley. There are several different lenses with which to view this issue – through one lens, more healthcare services could mean more choice, giving options to locals valley-wide. Through another, you see that duplicating services may equate to rising healthcare costs, potentially leaving providers and patients worse off than before. In the absence of a regional study, these perspectives are difficult to weigh. So politics fills the gap, and some Grand County elected officials are reluctant to oppose another county’s plan. It’s a big conversation, so we start from the beginning.

A group of local citizens won a lawsuit against Moab City related to the proposed Lionsback Resort, planned for development near Sand Flats Recreation Area. The Utah Court of Appeals ruled that Moab City violated state and local land use code when they approved the resort’s proposed modifications without a public hearing. However, an attorney for the city said this decision does not mean Lionsback Resort is simply going to ‘go away.’ But neither, say the citizens, will they.
