男の子と女の子の赤ん坊だったのですが、産婆が産湯を浸からせる際、どちらがどちらの子かわからなくなってしまいました。

嫁も姑も、男の子が自分の子だと言い張ります。

困り果てた二人は、名奉行・大岡越前に解決をお願いします。

Once upon a time, a wife and her mother-in-law gave birth to a baby at the same time.

They had a boy and a girl, but when the woman gave birth to the baby, she couldn't tell which was which.

The wife and mother-in-law both insisted that the boy was their child.

Both the wife and mother-in-law insist that the baby boy is theirs. The two are so troubled that they ask the famous magistrate, Ooka Echizen, to solve the problem.
