維新の少し前。

土佐藩の藩士・小坂丹治は火縄銃をもって、山に狩りへ出た。

松の梢に鶴が止まっていた。ちょうど撃ち良いところであった。

鶴を狩るのは禁止されていたが、山の中には誰もいない。

鶴を狙って火縄をつけた。銃声の後、確かな手応えを感じたが、鶴は無傷であった。

小坂丹治は、行きしなに赤ん坊とも猿ともつかぬ不気味な生き物に遭遇したことを思い出した。

Just before the Meiji Restoration.

Tanji Kosaka, a feudal lord of the Tosa Clan, went hunting in the mountains with a firearm.

A crane was perched on the treetop of a pine tree. He was just in time to shoot it.

It was forbidden to hunt cranes, but there was no one else in the mountain.

I aimed at the crane and attached the fire rope. After the shot, he felt a definite response, but the crane was unharmed.

Tanji Kosaka remembered that he had encountered an eerie creature, neither a baby nor a monkey, on his way.
