さる天皇の御代に、竜苑寺という寺があった。

その寺に、一人の僧があって、法華経をよく読誦し、その講義をすることを、毎日の日課としていた。

そこに竜がやってきた。竜は法華経を聞き、講義を聞き、心を打たれて、人の姿となって毎日聴聞した。

僧は竜に尋ねた。「そなたは、いつもやって来て講義を聞いておられる。いったいどなたなのですか」

竜は本意を答え、僧は快く迎え入れ、二人は親しく交際するようになった。

During the reign of an emperor, there was a temple called Ryoen-ji.

There was a monk who spent his days reciting the Lotus Sutra and giving lectures on it.

Then a dragon came to the temple. The dragon listened to the Lotus Sutra and was so moved by the lecture that he took on human form and listened to it every day.

The monk asked the dragon, "Do you always come here? The monk asked the dragon, "You are always coming and listening to the lectures. Who are you?

The monk welcomed him with open arms, and the two became close friends.
