冬の日暮れ、私は横須賀線上り二等客車に乗って、発車を待っていた。

客車には私一人しか客はなく、プラットホームも閑散としていた。

発車の笛が吹かれた時、慌ただしく乗り込んできた客がいた。

それは貧しい格好をした13,14歳の小娘だった。

It was dusk on a winter's day, and I was waiting for the train to depart in a second-class passenger car on the Yokosuka Line.

I was the only passenger in the coach and the platform was deserted.

When the whistle blew, there was a rush of passengers who boarded the train.

It was a poorly dressed 13- or 14-year-old girl.
