    WOW, What a Stinker
"Start at the toes...Tighten, tighten...Rebuild. Rebuild..." --I cannot tell you how many times the author had her horribly insecure heroine speaking those lines in her head as a calming exercise, but it was about 50 too many. Why have a heroine who was called a fierce businesswoman, who was an Olympian medal winner, and who owned and ran a major newspaper in Chicago be such a TOTAL emotional and insecure wreck and constantly allow herself to be manipulated??? It not only baffled, but produced a miserable book.
The hero was said to run a security specialist company, but he was really a wuss and the bad guys-in both the sabotage of their relationship and in committing crimes-were blatantly obvious. The romance was lackluster and every characters was hollow, unimpressive and just darn unlikable.
The narrator was annoying. Her speaking tone was really too old for this book and she gave the hero an awful whispery soft-spoken voice.
    Awesome who done it book!
What did you like about this audiobook?
I loved the mystery of the book.
How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?
I like that it didn't make it easy for me to figure out the mystery. It was a fresh subject.
Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?
    .
What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?
I don't think there was anything wrong with the narrator's performance.
Do you have any additional comments?
Good book. It had just the right amount of romance with a healthy amount of mystery. I like when I can't figure out who done it. If you like that in a book then this books for you. Happy reading!

    Publisher's Summary:
It has been nearly a year since psychologist Daniel Rinaldi, a trauma expert who consults with the Pittsburgh Police, helped unravel a baffling murder, and now he finds himself drawn into another case. In the midst of a blistering summer heat wave, a daring bank robbery has gone horribly wrong, resulting in the deaths of all the hostages except one, Treva Williams, and Rinaldi is called in to treat the young woman.

All of this is played out against the gubernatorial campaign of Rinaldis former romantic rival, District Attorney Leland Sinclair. Suddenly, as death threats against Sinclair fuel a mounting frenzy of accusations and political maneuvering, Rinaldi finds himself facing the reality that the two cases might somehow be connected and, therefore, what he knowsor thinks he knowsmakes him a target as well.
Fever Dream is the second book in the Daniel Rinaldi series, following Mirror Image.

    Mindless Listening
What did you like best about Fever Dream? What did you like least?
It was OK for filling hours of travel time, but I would have had no trouble ending the story at any time and never bother to wonder how it ended. As a matter of fact, the book was actually better without the ending.
Has Fever Dream turned you off from other books in this genre?
    No
What does William Hughes bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
    I could travel and listen.
Did Fever Dream inspire you to do anything?
It inspired me to not chose this author again which was disappointing because I thought maybe I had discovered new characters I would enjoy getting to know over time.

    Voices from the Titanic
    enjoyed it1
    Good book.
This book was very good. It was about a murder after the all the survivors of the Titanic and a murder that takes place. The main character is also trying to figure out who murdered his friend on the Titanic.
The Perfect Sequel to a Great Book
Voices from the Titanic is the perfect sequel to the great mystery Murder on the Titanic. It continues the story of Morgan Fairfield as he takes his job at the Herald in the midst of more murders and the Titanic hearings. It introduces intresting characters and a wonderful plot. I salute Mr. James Walker who is a wonderful historical writer. The book was great and I can't wait to read his other works.
    Puzzling
This sequel to "Murder on the Titanic" is pleasing to read and enjoyable, however it, as well as its first installment, carry voids in plot. Plot holes, if you will. It's dissapointing, because he raises more questions than he gives answers. But otherwise, it's a thrilling read, and has some interesting commentaries on the real-life Titanic characters at the end of the volume.
    A Great Book!
I can't believe how good it was. It's better than the previos installment 'Murder on the Titanic' which was also splendid. Anyone who is interested in the Titanic has to read this book.

    Title: The Falls
Subtitle: An Inspector Rebus Novel, Book 12

    Narrator: James Macpherson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 16 hrs and 10 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-13-11
    Publisher: Orion Publishing Group Limited
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 30 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
A student has gone missing in Edinburgh - completely out of character. She's not just any student, though, but the daughter of extremely well-to-do and influential bankers. There's almost nothing to go on until Detective Inspector John Rebus gets an unmistakable gut feeling that there's more to this than just another runaway spaced out on unaccustomed freedom or worse.
Two leads emerge: a carved wooden doll in a toy coffin, found in the student's home village, and an Internet role-playing game. The ancient and the modern, brought together by uncomfortable circumstance and a curmudgeonly detective happier with long playing records than digital technology. In this powerful novel, Rankin brings together past, present and future in a terrifying duel of good - in the persons of DI Rebus and DC Siobhan Clarke - and evil.

    Another Masterful Rankin
What made the experience of listening to The Falls the most enjoyable?
Rebus is a very real character. At times you like him, at others you hate him.
What does Samuel Gillies bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
His accent isn't overpowering - it works well for all the characters.
    The usual Rebus
This took a long time for anything to happen really but it did get going about half way through. Not the best Rebus book but ok. Ideally the series should be read in order to appreciate all the characters and their progression through life.
    One of the best
I've read all Rebus books but it's great listening to them. This is one of the best with excellent narration
    A good book poorly read
I do like to hear the Rebus Books read by Tom Cotcher. However Samuel Gillies does Ian Rankin an injustice by reading this book. He sounds like he could well be reading a telephone directory. I found that it was a dissapointment to hear what could be a good story being so poorly read and I gave up listening to it after a few hours.
    Best one so far
Great story. Gripping. Twists and turns. Kept me on the edge of my seat. Gotta love Inspector Rebus.

    A modern English Cozy
One of the best books I have "read" in some time. I found the primary and secondary characters engaging and the writing lyrical at times. The setting in the Peaks area is perfect and the author makes the area itself one of the primary characters. Fans of the traditional English cozy shouldn't be too off put by the bits of violence, but should enjoy getting to know the villagers and the police personnel as the story unwinds.
This is my first time with one of Stephen Booth's books. I hope Audible makes available to the U.S. customer the other Booth books as soon as possible (Audible.co.uk has many more selections.) This is a wonderful series -- I look forward to reading it from the beginning.
Mike Rogers performance is "spot on." The voices of the characters are distinctive and his performance enhanced the story.
    Great Story and super characters
I have to caveat this review in that my interest in this story was first piqued by the setting. Having spent time in the Peak District and also having family who live there - it is like a homecoming to read and travel through the villages, towns, and landscape.
This was my introduction to the Cooper/Fry mysteries. While it was obvious to me that there was a history of which i knew nothing i didn't find that it detracted from the enjoyment. Quite the contrary it whet my appetite to get and read the earlier books.
The Devil's Edge takes you (and Ben) around the peak district, on literal cliffs and personal ones.
Following the horrible attacks of a group of toughs dubbed the 'Savages" the search is on to find who did this. On the way you find out just how small a village can be when you have nosy neighbors.
It is a great listen and Mike is very easy to listen to.
It is very frustrating to see earlier books available to audible.co.uk listeners but not in the U.S. It is hoped that this will soon be resolved.
However do not let that stop you from getting this listen. It is worth it!!!!
Amazing "Peak District" atmosphere to murder.
Beautiful descriptions of the English "Peak District" and village life are a major part of the story. I enjoyed Booth's handling of the police procedural side, police inter-office relations, and personal village life. The search for the murder/s is step by step interesting and not a "hard-boiled" gritty murder mystery that makes me depressed after reading. I want to listen to more of Booth's books.
Roger's narration is great for the story.

    Good read!
I read the first book and enjoyed this one even more thanks to the excellent narrator. Complex and absorbing plot line. Recommended.
    Intriguing
Captivating style of writing that compliments a very lively, intelligent and fascinating imagination. Well done.
    Tagged-on Ending
I enjoyed this book, right up until the end. I felt the story ended abruptly and then the real ending was tagged-on. Too much was packed into the epilogue, as though the writer had grown bored of developing the plot and wished to end it quickly. I'm sorry to say I'm returning it.

Internationally-acclaimed author George V. Higginsa master of action and suspensecontinues his gripping series in Bombers Law. Higgins riveting style enlivens this tale of cops and mobsters set in a world of fast-talking wise guys and heavily-armed exiles from Palookaville. When Brian Dennison succeeds Bomber Lawrence as head detective in the Massachusetts State Police Department, he soon realizes that Bostons upwardly-mobile mobsters arent going to let him hang around until retirement age. Can Dennison out-smart the mob, or will Bombers Law claim him as another victim?
Higgins critically-acclaimed booksincluding Sandra Nichols Found Dead and The Friends of Eddie Coyleare filled with rich characters and gut-wrenching dialogue. Trapped On A Bus
Imagine a 1500 hundred mile bus ride, seated in a window seat, moving 5 miles an hour through stop and go traffic, at night, next to a stranger in the aisle seat who talks without stopping about whatever random subject floats to the surface of his alleged brain -- his mother-in-law's mortgage payments, the ethics of lottery sales, the price of beans -- and who speaks in sentences so long, filled with asides, circumlocutions, analogies and repetitive emphases that you have long since forgotten the sentence's subject by the time its end arrives -- and you have an inkling of listening to this book.
I'm a George Higgins fan, but this must be his version of "Waiting for Godot," perhaps on a dare to break the world record for most topics raised discussed between two characters without ever advancing the plot. Hammer is a good reader for Higgins, but he is wasted: you just want the pain to stop.

    Language: English
    Release date: 05-01-11
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 48 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Sailing back from Maine, Sam Acquillo, his girlfriend, Amanda Anselma, and screwball mutt Eddie Van Halen get blown off course by a dangerous gale. With damaged boat and frayed nerves, they limp into the closest harbor, which happens to be on Fishers Island, New York, a distant and altogether disassociated scrap of Long Island.
A summer preserve for the oldest old money in America, it is defended by year-round denizens who safeguard their islands insularity with xenophobic fervor. Sam and Amanda are hardly welcomed with open arms, unless theyre the arms of the young and beautiful Anika Fey, daughter of the owner of the Black Swan, the islands only hotel, whos only too eager to fold Sam into her embrace.
But feminine wiles arent the only hazard faced by Sam and Amanda. Theyre soon swept up in big-money intrigue, dark conspiracy, brutality, murder, and the machinations of high-tech millionaires, to say nothing of the autumn storms that lash the island with wind and wave.
In the years since losing everything, Sam has fought his way back to an existence that even he believes is worth preserving. And now, bad timing and a broken rudder could result in the greatest loss of all - his life.
Chris Knopf's four Sam Acquillo mysteries have received exceptional accolades, with critics likening Sam to Dashiell Hammetts Sam Spade, Raymond Chandlers Philip Marlowe, and Robert Parkers Spenser, while repeatedly comparing Knopf to Elmore Leonard, John D. MacDonald, and Ross Macdonald. A sailor, cabinet maker, and advertising executive in Connecticut, he and his wife also spend a lot of time at their Southampton home.
    Critic Reviews:
The vivid descriptions of an angry sea and the monster storm that strikes the island fairly dwarf the human threats facing Sam and Amanda. (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    A clever tale
There's a lot to like about this story by Chris Knopf. There's the "locals versus wash-ashores" conflict. A good dose of steamy sexual tension. The mysteries of brilliant minds. Man versus nature on a few levels. And a good old-fashioned mystery to unravel. One of his most satisfying reads to date.
    narrator or story? or both?
i haven't yet met a chris knopf book that i didn't like. this story - which is definitely reminiscent of Key Largo - starts out with a nautical nightmare. but it never really is explained why Sam Acquillo is drawn into to this mystery. even as it plays out, Sam himself questions his motives, but never explains the why. i've been drawn to all previous Knopf's books as his main characters and the quirky buddies that accompany him along the way are entwined at some point with the "mystery".
further, Keith Szarabajka's voice sounds to me too much like Richard Ferrone's voice (narrator of two of the more recent Acquillo audio books) so it became distracting to me as the performance sounded like Ferrone's but was not quite the same, and seemed rushed and flat. i will read/listen to it again down the road as i would prefer to give this wonderful writer a higher rating. it could just be that it was the combination of the story and the narrator made it difficult for me to engage entirely. if you are a fan, definitely don't pass this one by. if you are a first time Acquillo reader definitely start with the earlier books.

Their every move is being shadowed by a fanatical cabal of agents who are desperate to hide the astronishing secret Thomas's brother stumbled upon - and willing to kill to keep it buried in shadows of history forever.
    Critic Reviews:
"Not only is Hartley's novel well paced, with enough twists and turns to keep most thriller fans satisfied, he avoids the missteps of most attempts to cash in on the Da Vinci Code zeitgeist by focusing on the faithful rather than freewheeling conspiracies.... [T]his slam-bang title is a very fun, surprisingly satisfying read." (Publishers Weekly)
"Exactly the kind of archaeological thriller I love." (Douglas Preston)

Collapse of "Willing Suspension of Disbelief"
The plot could have been interesting being based on research into symbols. Even the personalities involved, ( including members of a secret society, a senator, a discredited school teacher, a few priests, a dishonest researcher, a good student and an ex wife) have potential interest. The geographic backgrounds are varied.
Not even my willing suspension of disbelief can see an unhealthy bloke take on and beat 4 trained assassins. This is not The Grey Man. OK, the potential of a crazy CIA Black Op's gone wrong, could have made for an interesting sub plot.
Good for a giggle on par with B grade movies of the 1940's, without the style.
Nick Sullivan's reading at times., fell into something akin to reading a shopping list aloud.
At one stage, the thug took on the Irish lilt of the good priest.
    Only two stars.
    Nice international religious thriller
Good story wrapped in religious history. What would happen if something was discovered that suddenly turned the religious world on it's ear?
