      • Intermittent Fasting for Today's Aging Woman with Dy Ann Parham

Intermittent Fasting for Today's Aging Woman with Dy Ann Parham

We’ve always been told a healthy lifestyle means following specific dietary guidelines. We may end up following the trend or a diet a friend has been doing without really asking ourselves, “What’s good for me?” Every woman should have the opportunity to look and feel their best. However, we sometimes forget to listen to our bodies, and we end up wondering why what’s working for others isn’t working for us.

Today, we are joined by Dy Ann Parham, creator of the Intermittent Fasting for Today’s Aging Woman course. She’s here to share the setbacks she experienced in her health and the importance of changing your lifestyle to match the changes in your body. She explains how we have to be mindful of what we feel when we eat and how society has affected our lifestyle choices. Dy Ann also talks about the combination of intermittent fasting and a keto-like diet.

Make sure to listen to this episode to find out about intermittent fasting and choosing food that’s right for you. Don’t miss out, and use this opportunity to learn how to look and be your best.

        • The Obesity Code: Unlocking the Secrets of Weight Loss by Dr. Jason Fung

        About Our Guest

Dy Ann Parham is a wife, a mom, and an online fitness and nutrition coach who has worked in the health and fitness industry for over 25 years. She is a certified Precision Nutrition Exercise Nutrition Coach, as well as a certified running coach with the United Endurance Sports Coaching Academy. She created the Intermittent Fasting for Today’s Aging Woman course, teaching women across the globe how to heal their bodies.

Dy Ann’s Advice on Food and FastingHealth & Fitness Challenges

        • Dy Ann worked in the health and fitness industry, nearly her entire adult life.
        • In her younger years, she suffered from hypoglycemia.
        • In her late 40s, she went through perimenopause. She became prediabetic and suffered precursor signs of Alzheimer’s.
        • What was happening to Dy Ann was a result of her body chemistry changing and her not evolving with it.
        • A change she noticed was gaining and maintaining belly fat no matter how much she exercised.

        Change with Your Body

        • Menopause is a natural state for women.
        • Give your body the time to heal and make use of its resources.
        • Over-dieting and overexercising can change the way the body works.
        • When a woman’s body changes in the menopausal stage, she needs to figure out what it needs. No one answer fits all.
        • Figure out what’s right for you. A diet plan that works for others may not necessarily work for you.
        • Reflect on your lifestyle choices, such as alcohol consumption, and how it affects you.

        Mindfulness in Food Consumption

        • Dy Ann realized that she was experiencing chronic pain due to soy intolerance. She then started checking the ingredients of the products she was consuming.
        • Be mindful of how you feel when you’re eating and after eating.
        • We end up consuming food for emotional reasons, not for life-sustaining reasons.
        • We have to heal ourselves emotionally and mentally so we can introduce food into our lives the way it was intended.

        Food and Exercise in Society

        • In society, food has often been used as a reward. Exercise, on the other hand, is a punishment.
        • Exercise should be about rewarding yourself for future possibilities.

        Misconceptions About Fat

        • A fat-free lifestyle is not appropriate. We need fat to build our hormones.
        • A researcher, Ancel Keys, made widely known the idea that fat was the leading cause of heart attacks. At the same time, studies on sugar as the main culprit of heart diseases were suppressed.

        Intermittent Fasting

        • The most common protocol for intermittent fasting is 16:8 – 16 hours of fasting, 8 hours of feasting. It is mostly for young people and those who work out.
        • Another protocol is 20:4 – 20 hours fasting, 4 hours feasting.
        • The 20-hour fasting allows aging woman to have enough time to reset their body chemistry.

        Being Fat Adapted

        • A person can become fat-adapted through intermittent fasting.
        • Energized sense of calm: when our body’s fat adapted. You have an abundance of energy in a hungry state. You are emotionally and mentally sustained.
        • When a person is fat-adapted, instead of burning glucose for fuel, you’re burning ketones.

        Keto Feasting

        • Dy Ann recommended intermittent fasting plus ketogenic diet without the strict rules.
        • Dy Ann’s ketogenic diet recommendation: higher naturally occurring fats, moderate to low amounts of protein, and conscious carbohydrates
        • Use nutrient-dense foods.

        Custom Diets

        • Many diet programs do not account for how you were raised, your family and cultural practices, and your daily routine.
        • Find what makes you thrive and happy and build a ketogenic-like approach from there.
        • Choose food that will fuel your body.

Benefits of Intermittent Fasting for Aging Women

        • Intermittent fasting can help women heal physically, emotionally, and mentally.
        • Fasting for aging women helps them become more comfortable with feeling hungry. You think again and get to make better choices.

      • Hormones After Menopause with Dr. Sharzad Green

Hormones After Menopause with Dr. Sharzad Green

As women get older, we get closer to our menopausal age. When this happens, we tend to have a hormone imbalance. As a result, we may experience symptoms of weakened bones and decreased sexual function.

Today, we’re back on the show with pharmacist Dr. Sharzad Green. She will be discussing the required laboratories for a proper hormone consultation, the importance of thyroid glands, what estrogen allergy is, the importance of calcium in postmenopausal women, sexual dysfunction in menopause, and the role of vaginal dryness.

Some women may avoid talking about these concerns, but they are important, and we need to be informed. Make sure to tune in to the podcast to learn new and insightful information!

        About Our Guest

Dr. Sharzad Green is a pharmacist whose experience spans almost 30 years. Her primary focus is on women’s health. She specializes in integrative medicine, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, adrenal fatigue syndrome, and sexual dysfunction. In addition, she conducts counseling for women regarding their hormonal situation.

Dr. Green’s Advice on Your Hormonal Situation

        Proper Hormone Consultation

        • Laboratory tests establish the situation of your body.
        • Most people question the reliability of these tests, but they are necessary to understand the changes happening to your body.
        • Without undergoing a laboratory test, you and your doctors will not have a reference point, especially when you are nearing your menopausal age.
        • By having these tests, you can opt to undergo therapy and eventually check whether your body has improved or not.
        • The first recommended test is to measure your estrogen levels, namely estradiol and estrone sulfate.
        • As your estrogen levels drop, some biomarkers increase to indicate that you are nearing your menopause age. These two markers are called FSH or follicle-stimulating hormone and LH or luteinizing hormone.
        • The next hormone to measure is your progesterone level. This hormone is usually the first to drop and affects your mood.
        • The more your progesterone level drops, the worse the symptoms get.
        • Progesterone is significant for your mood, sleep, and bones. Together with estrogen, it prevents endometrial cancer.
        • Your testosterone level can also decrease years after you go into menopause. But for some people, it drops significantly before or at the onset of menopause. Low testosterone can prompt you to take supplements.
        • Another test is to measure your DHEA sulfate, which is connected to adrenal fatigue syndrome.
        • Having a thyroid panel could also benefit you and your doctor because thyroid imbalance could mimic female hormone imbalance.

        Importance of Thyroid Function

        • Green has no thyroid gland because it was surgically removed due to thyroid cancer.
        • A fancy drug does not mean it would be effective for you. You and your doctor should determine which drugs work for your body.
        • Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune disorder in which your body contains high antibodies, which can lead to your body attacking your thyroid gland.

        Estrogen Allergy

        • Bleeding due to hormone therapy is possible if you are not given the right estrogen dose or when you start therapy prematurely.
        • It is not true that an allergy causes this bleeding. You are not allergic to your hormones. However, you may experience bloating, premenstrual syndrome or PMS, breast tenderness, and water retention because your body is not yet ready for the therapy.
        • There is no such thing as estrogen allergy because all women produce estrogen in their bodies.

        Importance of Calcium in Postmenopausal

        • Your body must get about 1000 milligrams of calcium a day from food or food supplements.
        • Your hormones protect your bones, but when their levels drop, you could lose the strength of your bones and eventually get osteopenia and osteoporosis.
        • The combination of smoking and estrogen could increase blood clots, heart attacks, and strokes.
        • If your bone density is abnormal, then you should consider hormone therapy - a very individualized thing.

        The Role of Vaginal Dryness

        • Not having enough estrogen in your body can cause vaginal dryness.
        • Although it is not a publicly discussed topic, this happens a lot.
        • It can cause bladder issues, frequent leakages, recurrent urinary tract infections, and yeast infections.
        • Not having enough lubrication can result in thin and dry vaginal tissue, which can sometimes have cracks. This leads to painful sex.

        Women’s Sexual Dysfunction

        • Sex is a taboo and non-discussed subject.
        • Your overall testosterone and estrogen levels influence sex drive.
        • Sexual dysfunction can also be due to vaginal dryness.

        Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome

        • Adrenal glands are two glands on top of each kidney, helping you get through stressful situations.
        • For instance, due to major stress, your adrenal glands have to work extra hard until they get exhausted. When this happens, you will also feel tired.
        • Meditation is a recommended activity.
        • High doses of vitamin C of at least 1000 to 2000 milligrams, B complex, and adaptogens can also help your body get through adrenal fatigue syndrome.
        • However, the actual cure for this disorder is managing stress, having a proper diet, and exercise.

Make sure to tune in to the show to learn new and insightful ideas you could apply in your daily lives.

        About Our Guest

Dr. Demi Stevens is the CEO of Year of The Book Press, which aims to help budding authors turn their dreams into published books. Demi has personally assisted in the production of 350 titles, ranging from children’s books to best-selling business books, by more than 125 authors. She also obtained degrees from West Virginia University, Capital Northwestern, and Ohio State. She was also the director of Paul Smith Library and conducts one-on-one coaching through the entire drafting, editing, and publishing process of a book.

Demi Steven’s Advice to Turn Your Dreams Into a Story

        How It All Started

        • Demi Stevens was a librarian for almost a decade.
        • She noticed that early childhood education starts with books, so she made educational programs for the kids in her community.
        • Demi went into a meeting where she thought about writing a book.
        • She then gave it a try and started reaching out to people, despite being an introvert.
        • Demi made a list of what aspiring authors would need to learn and decided that it would be a year-long process.
        • Because of this, she thought that “Year of The Book Press” would be the perfect name for her company.

        Initial Success Rate

        • There were 57 people who attended the first day of her coaching services. About 48 of them were women who were almost in their menopausal age.
        • They may have a goal or dream they put on hold but are once again willing to embrace.
        • Out of the first attendees, 37 were able to finish their books, resulting in a 65% success rate.

        Skin in the Game

        • The first year of the Year of The Book Press was free. However, this was an obstacle to growth.
        • Transformation can only begin once a transaction takes place.
        • Spending money helps us commit to our goals and allows us to follow through with it.
        • The implementation does not depend on how much money you spend, but on your dedication and belief in yourself.

        Removing Obstacles

        • You will only get better at something if you continue doing it.
        • The faster you can fail forward, the better it will be for you.
        • Everything in your life is a story. When you share your words, they make you more vulnerable. But your raw and real experiences are those worth sharing.

        Remembering a Scene

        • Our memories can be faulty. Thus, the best time to record an event is to write it at that time.
        • We can identify themes in our own lives that reflect our readers’ feelings and experiences.

        How to Get Started

        • You need to sit down right at that moment and start writing your story.
        • The most crucial step is to get all your ideas out there.
        • You can make a bullet point of things you want to be part of your story and pick an item from there.
        • Bring yourself back into that moment and pour out everything you can remember and everything you felt. Stop until you feel like you have dumped everything out onto your paper.

        The Inception of an Idea

        • Our ideas come from the universe.
        • Writing can instill the fear of saying something and never getting the chance to take it back.
        • It can also make you think you’ll no longer have a story to tell after.
        • However, if you don’t take action on an idea, then someone else will bring it to life.
        • If you don’t write about an idea, it’s not only you who is losing but also anybody who wants to hear that information.
        • Find books that you love and take inspiration from the authors.

        Words Have Power

        • Women grew up in a patriarchal society where they tend to ask permission before getting started.
        • But in reality, only you are holding yourself back from writing your dreams.
        • A change in your behavior and mindset can help you build habits.
        • Befriend the woman inside your head, and remember that voice is not you but is just your mind.
        • Once you have written something, then you should consider yourself an author. Do not let your mind fool you into thinking you are an impostor.
        • Nothing good comes out of staying comfortable. It would be best if you learned to embrace your fears.

      • TMM_029 - Get The Body You Want with Meaghan Faragasso

For so many years, society has imposed standards on how our bodies should look. A lot of us get very self-conscious about our bodies, sometimes even resorting to unhealthy methods to get the figure we want. While we aim for a fitter body, our lack of motivation can get in the way. We get frustrated and we struggle to reach our fitness goals.

Today, we are joined by Meaghan Faragasso, founder of Envy This Body. In this episode, she shares how she got started in her journey toward a healthier lifestyle. She also explains how she helps women appreciate and care for their bodies and not give in to society’s standards. Meaghan also talks about motivation, the tools she uses to help her clients, the foods to avoid and why, and how she treats women with thyroid issues.

Make sure to listen to this episode to find out about customized diet programs, and you will realize you still have a chance to lose weight and be healthier.

        About Our Guest

Meaghan Faragasso is the founder of Envy This Body who aims to help women in their wellness and fitness journey. She specializes in custom nutrition and fitness programs for busy women. Meaghan is also an international fitness personality and has been modelling for over a decade. She has 20 years of experience as a personal trainer, life coach, and consultant for fitness companies.

Meaghan’s Advice on How to Get the Body You Want

        Meaghan’s Road to Wellness

        • Meaghan suffered from anorexia when she was young.
        • Her countless hospitalizations awakened her to dedicate her life to helping women appreciate and care for their bodies.

        Metabolic Reset

        • Most women have tried different things to lose weight and get frustrated because there’s no progress.
        • A metabolic reset can undo the damage our lifestyle has inflicted on us. It helps her clients lose fat and inflammation. And when they start losing weight drastically, they feel motivated and rewarded for their effort.
        • The program also tracks your food intake and how it affects your energy and sleep, among other factors.

        Hypothyroidism and Losing Weight

        • Most doctors only look at the numbers and ignore the symptoms.
        • It’s vital to address the symptoms because it doesn't matter what the numbers say; what matters is how you feel and how you're able to function.
        • We must work on changing our nutrition to find the right macronutrients and micronutrients for us.

        Checking Up on Clients

        • Meaghan does coaching calls every week, going over her clients’ wins and struggles for the week.
        • She and her clients discuss energy levels as well as hitting target marks.
        • If the program is not easy, then it is not sustainable.
        • Meaghan works with her clients in a one-on-one session instead of working in a group. She says they are more honest and open with their struggles in this setting.

        Food Intake Affects Energy

        • Meaghan says a particular type of social confidence has to be acquired to order your food.
        • “If this is your health, you can’t do what everyone else can do.”
        • She teaches her clients how to order food in a restaurant without the fear of being judged.

        Consuming Alcohol

        • As a neurotoxin, alcohol has drastic effects on our bodies.
        • Advertisements on TV make alcohol sexy, but the reality is that it negatively affects our bodies.

Keto Diet and Custom Diet Program

        • Meaghan does not prescribe any diet plan because every individual has different nutritional needs.
        • She makes a custom diet, such as nutrition programming, to suit the needs of her clients.
        • Meaghan sends a preliminary questionnaire to her clients to find out what they want to accomplish with their bodies.
        • She calls her clients to explain the program and their customized diet plans.

        What You Eat Matters

        • You can disrupt your hormones by eating toxic foods.
        • Even if you are conscious of the micronutrients in your food but don't understand calorie expenditure, it would still be a problem for your weight. It might cause health problems as well.

        Exercise

        • Nutrition is a significant factor in post-exercise recovery because it reduces muscle soreness.
        • When you eat right, your post-workout recovery starts with anabolic metabolism (muscle building) instead of catabolic metabolism (muscle breakdown).
        • For better recovery from an intense workout, combine protein and carbohydrates in your post-workout meal.

You may visit Meaghan’s website, Envy This Body, to know more about her services.
