  • Leaders in Cleantech #131 - Alexander Helling – Baseload Capital

    What’s it all about?

Geothermal. How big is the opportunity to exploit this renewable resource for heating, cooling and for power generation? Where are the hot spots (excuse the pun), what are the business models and use cases? How can we use heat to cool a warming world! This and all things Geothermal.

    About Alexander Helling:

As CEO, Alexander is in charge of Baseload Capital’s investments and overall portfolio performance. He has extensive experience in international project finance as well as founding, operating, and running companies. Alexanders key competence lies in equity and debt finance having spent more than 20 years of raising capital and structuring corporate debt and project finance structures for projects and companies. He is motivated by working with companies that have a higher purpose like the energy transition and how we can speed the transition up by new technologies, smart funding solutions and motivated teams.

    About Baseload Capital
Baseload Capital is a specialized investment entity that leads partnerships to scale up geothermal power deployment worldwide. Geothermal power comes from the Earth’s inner core and provides a fossil-free, stable, 24/7 available baseload for electricity and heating and cooling. We work with like-minded investors to fund geothermal energy projects and tap into the planet’s largest renewable energy source that lies right beneath our feet.

We establish operating companies in global locations, which comprise the Baseload Power organization. They partner with local communities and power providers to commission, permit and build Baseload Capital-funded geothermal power plants.
Together we dream of a planet in balance with resilient societies that run on renewable energy.
We will be part of this transition by leading partnerships to scale up geothermal project development.

    What’s it all about?
The A-Bomb- No not that one. Why does no one talk about Adaptation? Of course we should and must keep working on inventing, scaling and investing in technologies that combat climate change, and help prevent the worst outcomes, but we’re already well down the path of negative climate feedback loops. We have to talk about, and invest in technologies that help mitigate the worst of what is already happening, and what’s to come. Floods, water shortages, food disruption, climate refugees and extreme weather events. They are here, we can’t ignore it.
    About Ulrich Seitz:

  • Leaders in Cleantech #127 - Christoph Berger - vilisto

    Christoph Berger - vilisto

    What’s it all about?
Renewable Heat, as we’ve featured recently, so often the elephant in the room. Addressing the needs of decarbonising heat is critical to the clean energy transition. In this episode we address heating and inefficiency in commercial and public buildings as I speak to CEO and Founder of Vilisto, Christophe Berger. Having recently raised a £5m they are focused on scaling to bring their solutions to a wider audience.

    About Christoph Berger:
Christoph Berger is Co-Founder and CEO of vilisto. During his studies of Energy Systems at the TU Hamburg and UC Berkeley, Christoph first came into contact with the topic of heat management. His scientific research focused on evaluating and implementing methods of predicting future energy demand in buildings. He soon realised that especially non-residential buildings are often heated inefficiently and that the solutions available on the market were not able to comfortably solve this challenge. Backed up by the results of his study and based on his expertise in energy systems, Christoph then founded vilisto in 2016 with co-founders Christian Brase and Lasse Stehnken.

    About vilisto:
vilisto digitizes the heat management of non-residential buildings and in turn helps companies and public clients reduce their heating costs and CO₂ emissions by up to 32%. At the heart of their digital heat management solution is the intelligent thermostats with an integrated, patented presence detection and learning algorithms that automatically manages the individual room temperature. In addition, a connected online platform allows for a central and efficient management of property portfolios. So far vilisto has optimized a wide range of customer buildings across the DACH-region with convincing savings results and won prestigious awards like the German Innovation Prize for Climate and Environment, demonstrating an essential path that realizes both – the ecological and the economic dimension of a sustainable energy transition.

About Jørgen Erdal: As the Co-founder & CEO of Evyon, Jørgen is fully devoted to maximizing the value of every Battery, by converting a growing volume of discarded batteries into high-quality battery energy storage systems. With his passion to create a positive impact on the planet, Jørgen and his team at Evyon are in a leading position to reach their ambition of becoming the European leader in reused batteries in 2025. Jørgen is also a Co-founder of Protect Our Winters's branch in Norway, a worldwide NGO working to raise awareness of climate change within the winter sports community. As an ex-BCG consultant specializing in renewable energy strategy, financing, operating models, and more, he supported some of Europe's largest energy companies to succeed in the energy transition. During his time at BCG, Jørgen was also the main driver of the local and regional sustainability activities of BCG as a company. Jørgen holds a Master's Degree of Science in Electrical Energy Engineering from The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and ETH Zürich. Jørgen's master's thesis was to develop a stochastic optimization algorithm for how to operate a residential battery system in order to maximize its value under different tariff structures. About Evyon:  Evyon is a Norwegian Antler portfolio company founded in 2020 by Jørgen Erdal and Radu Achihai. Evyon exists to enable maximum value generation from second-life batteries by repurposing them in a safe, data-driven, and cost-effective way. Evyon’s proprietary hardware and Battery Cloud ecosystem enable the conversion of EV batteries into high-quality, affordable, and plug-and-play battery energy storage systems. Towards 2030, the amount of discarded EV batteries is estimated to grow to more than 200 GWh per year - the equivalent of more than 3 million EVs. Most of these are expected to be fully functional with less than 80% remaining capacity that can live on for 10+ years in a second life if you are able to identify them, repurpose them and operate them in an efficient and safe manner. This is exactly what Evyon is developing.
