Listen Later

This edWeb podcast is hosted by AASA, The Superintendents Association.
The webinar recording can be accessed here.

Dr. Amy Sichel, AASA Lead Superintendent and past president of AASA as well as retired superintendent of the Abington School District (Abington, PA), moderates an engaging discussion with Dr. Khalid Mumin, Reading School District’s Superintendent (Reading, PA) and Marlon Styles, Superintendent of Middletown City Schools (Middletown, OH). Both superintendents share stories of what works in their school districts to make sure ALL students are well served. Khalid and Marlon share what’s working, as well as what isn’t working with their equity agendas. In the dialogue, ideas are shared on how to have courageous conversations and move beyond excuses to implement action-oriented equity strategies. This presentation includes examples of how to build community support and adopt an anti-racism school resolution. Actionable options and resources are included in the presentation.

Essential questions include:

  • How can school districts engage in courageous conversations and generate the “courage to lead” action?
  • What role do superintendents have in running an equity agenda?
  • How does strong community support assist with developing allies, advocates, and activists?
  • What are the role responsibilities of a district’s Equity Director?
  • What training do boards of education need in adopting an equity agenda?
  • What actions do school leaders need to do for kids who are underserved?

Listeners learn about strategies to address systemic disparities and inequities in order to benefit all students.
