It's easy to jump to condemnation, to discard people whom we dislike or who irritate us. Be careful of what you might be discarding, the strengths and skills they may be able to offer, if only they're treated in such a way that the good can emerge.

How do you unlock employee potential? Rather than discard them, consider if they've been given the opportunity to learn about themselves. Perhaps they need a role with greater or different responsibility.

In his Thought for the Week in the shadow of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, Thom Dennis shows how poor communication of purpose can have such devastating results, and that it happens in organisations as well. 

 "Shame is a focus on self and guilt is a focus on behaviour"

Inspired by Brene Brown's Ted talk on "Listening to shame", Thom Dennis discusses the power of guilt, and the destructive nature of shame. There is no evidence to support the contention that shame as a method of punishment or to change behaviour works. In actual fact it produces more of the negative behaviour by amplifying the individual's negative view of themselves. Guilt, on the other hand encourages a change in behaviour because it emphasises the dissonance between the bad behaviour and the individual's values.
