Il Carnevale di Viareggio

Chi ha detto che il carnevale più famoso d'Italia è quello di Venezia? Forse è il più conosciuto al mondo, ma a livello europeo è nettamente più importante il carnevale di Viareggio. A Venezia le maschere e i costumi rievocano la vita della laguna settecentesca di un tempo, mentre a Viareggio la società contemporanea è la protagonista, con tutti i suoi vizi e difetti. Personaggi di fama mondiale vengono rappresentati in modo caricaturale e scherzoso, politici, uomini di cultura o di spettacolo, nessuno viene risparmiato!

Il carnevale di Viareggio, città della Toscana in provincia di Lucca, nasce nel 1873. Dal diciannovesimo secolo gli artigiani viareggini modellano la cartapesta creando delle vere opere d'arte. Queste vengono messe in mostra sui carri che sfilano lungo un viale di tre chilometri che si affaccia sul mare. Nel 2001 ha aperto pure un museo, “Il museo della Cittadella”, dove vengono svelati segreti e trucchi della cartapesta, c'è pure un laboratorio a disposizione dei visitatori.

L'allegria del carnevale di Viareggio è unica al mondo, arrivano persone da tutta Italia ed Europa, i festeggiamenti sono lunghi e chiassosi, accompagnati dalla musica della banda. Nelle domeniche tra gennaio e febbraio se siete in Toscana dovete assolutamente vedere questa festa, unica nel suo genere. Carnevale per gli italiani significa divertimento e a Viareggio divertire le persone è un'arte che continua da decenni!

The Carnival of Viareggio

Who said that Italy's most famous carnival is the one in Venice? Perhaps it is the best known in the world, but in Europe, the carnival of Viareggio is much more important. In Venice, masks and costumes evoke life in an eighteenth-century lagoon, while in Viareggio, contemporary society, with all its bad habits and flaws, is the protagonist. World-famous big names are represented in a grotesque and facetious way. Politicians, men of culture, and entertainment—no one is spared!

The carnival of Viareggio, which takes place in this city in Tuscany in the province of Lucca, was born in 1873. Since the nineteenth century, artisans from Viareggio have used papier-mâché to create real works of art. These are put on display on floats that parade along a three-kilometer boulevard overlooking the sea. In 2001, the Museum of the Citadel opened, where secrets and tricks of working with papier-mâché are revealed, and there is also a laboratory on tap for visitors.

The joy of Viareggio's carnival is unique in the world. People come from all over Italy and Europe to take part. The festivities are long and loud, and they are accompanied by the music of the citizens' band. If you are in Tuscany on Sundays between January and February, you should definitely see this festival, which is unique in its kind. Carnival for Italians means to have fun, and in Viareggio, entertaining people is an art that has continued for decades!
