„Dimineață pierdută” este un roman scris de Gabriela Adameșteanu. Romanul a fost publicat pentru prima dată în 1983.

Personajul principal este o femeie în vârstă și săracă, pe nume Vivica Delca, care a îndurat un șir nesfârșit de necazuri care au chinuit România între Primul Război Mondial și anul 1999.

Este o povestitoare pasionată, care bârfește și discută energic cu oamenii din localitatea sa, dar, în același timp, este și o bună ascultătoare, lucru care îi permite lui Adameșteanu să ilustreze prin intermediul dialogurilor societatea românească de la acea vreme.

În perioada de timp în care are loc acțiunea romanului, au loc schimbări dramatice în averile păturilor sociale din România.

Toate personajele din „Dimineață pierdută”, fie că sunt oameni avuți sau nevoiași, cinstiți sau plini de înșelăciune, se confruntă cu această schimbare seismică, iar Adameșteanu îi reînvie, creând astfel un portret viu al societății românești din acea perioadă dificilă de pe parcursul a șaptezeci de ani.

Mulți critici consideră „Dimineață pierdută” unul dintre cele mai bune romane postbelice românești.

Pentru acest roman Adameșteanu a primit un premiu din partea Uniunii Scriitorilor din România și, datorită succesului pe scară largă, romanul a fost dramatizat și montat între anii 1987-1990 pe scena Teatrului Bulandra din București.

Mai târziu, piesa a fost difuzată la TV și radiourile publice din țară.

Romanul se impune ca o lectură obligatorie pentru elevii români, iar mulți doctoranzii își scriu teza în baza acestei lucrări.

Romanul „Dimineață pierdută” a fost, de asemenea, publicat în Estonia, Bulgaria, Ungaria și Israel.

Wasted Morning is a novel written by Gabriela Adamesteanu and first published in 1983.

The main character is an elderly destitute woman named Vivica Delca who has endured the never-ending string of tribulations that afflicted Romania between World War I and 1999.

She is an avid storyteller who gossips and chats vigorously with the people in her town, although she is also an active listener, enabling Adamesteanu to illustrate society in Romania at the time using words.

During the time in which the story is set, Romania's social strata are undergoing dramatic shifts in their fortunes.

Whether wealthy or impecunious or honest or full of deceit, the characters in Wasted Morning are all experiencing this seismic shift, and Adamesteanu breathes life into all of them, making them come alive in what feels to the reader like a living portrait of Romanian society during these difficult years over the course of seventy years.

Many critics consider Wasted Morning to be one of Romania's best post-World War II novels.

The book earned Adamesteanu an award from the Romanian Writers' Union and, because of its widespread success, was transformed into a stage play, which was performed in Bucharest between 1987 and 1990 at the Bulandra Theater.

Later the play was broadcast on TV and public radio in the country.

The book itself is also considered to essential reading for Romanian students, and many doctoral candidates wrote their dissertations on it.

In addition to Romania, Wasted Morning has also been published in Estonia, Bulgaria, Hungary, and Israel.
