„Maitreyi” este un roman scris de filozoful și scriitorul român Mircea Eliade.
El ficționează relația sa erotică cu Maitreyi Devi, cea care a fost protejata literară a legendarului poet bengalez Rabindranath Tagore.
Eliade locuia în India în perioada relației lor amoroase.
Romanul „Maitreyi” a fost publicat în limba română în anul 1933, urmând limba italiană în 1945, limba germană în 1948, limba franceză în 1950, limba spaniolă în 1952, esperanto în 2007 și în catalană în 2011.
Cea mai populară traducere a fost cea în limba franceză, care a fost ulterior ecranizată, avându-l în rolul principal pe Hugh Grant.
Ani de-a rândul, Devi nu a știut despre faptul că povestea relației sale cu Eliade a fost publicată. După ce află despre acest lucru, Devi scrie un roman răspuns, în 1974, în care redă propria viziune despre dragostea lor.
Restiturirea relației de către Devi a fost publicată mai întâi în limba bengali, însă, a fost ulterior tradusă și publicată în limba engleză, sub titlul „Dragostea nu moare”.

Bengal Nights is a novel written by Romanian philosopher and writer Mircea Eliade.
He fictionalized his amorous relationship with Maitreyi Devi, who was legendary Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore's protégé.
Eliade was in India at the time of their amatory relationship.
Bengal Nights was published in Romanian in 1933, followed by Italian in 1945, German in 1948, French in 1950, Spanish in 1952, Esperanto in 2007, and Catalan in 2011.
The most famous translation is the French, which was transformed into a film starring Hugh Grant.
Devi didn't know the story of her relationship with Eliade has been published for years, but after she finally did read his account of it, she wrote her own account of their amour in 1974.
Devi's rendering of the relationship was published first in Bengali, but it was later published under the title It Does Not Die in English.
Bengal Nights was not published in English until 1993 because Eliade pledged to Devi that an English translation wouldn't be published until after both of them had died.
Posthumously, in 1994, Eliade's and Devi's accounts of their romance were published as companion volumes.
The name of the main character in Bengal Nights is Allan, who works for a company headed up by Narendra Sen, an engineer.
After he is dispatched to the part of India that receives copious amounts of rain, he contracts malaria.
He returns to Calcutta where he is admitted to a hospital.
Following treatment, Sen invites him to his house, and soon after arriving, he falls in love with Sen's daughter Maitreyi, beginning a blossoming but forbidden romance between them.
