„Na tomto mieste stála pôvodná mestská veža ako súčasť mestského opevnenia - valov. Bola vybudovaná pravdepodobne v roku 1450 -1474. Valcovitá veža mala kamenné základy široké tri metre, jej vnútorný priemer bol osem metrov. Základy veže boli objavené archeologickým výskumom v roku 2008. Rekonštrukcia veže do súčastnej podoby bola urobená v roku 2010, aby súčastníkom i budúcim generáciam pripomínala bohatú históriu mesta Žiliny.“

L: Celý deň. Spali sme na letisku. (The whole/entire day. We slept at the airport.)

J: Ach, Bóže! Ale dovolenka, bola dobrá? (Oh, God! But the vacation, was it good?)

L: Fantastická. Mali sme pekné počasie, pršalo iba raz. A dážď bol osviežujúci. (Fantastic. We had nice weather, it rained only once. And the rain was refreshing.)

J: Takže ste si to užili. (So, you enjoyed it.)

L: Užili. A čo ty? Išli ste niekde? (Yes, I enjoyed it. How about you? Did you go somewhere?)

J: Nie. Veď vieš, šetríme na synovu svadbu. (No. You know, we are saving for our son’s wedding.)

L: Ale veď ste mohli ísť niekde locálne. (But you could go somewhere locally.)

J: Mysleli sme, že pôjdeme k jazeru, ráno tam a večer naspäť. Tak sme sa tešili. (We thought that we would go to the lake, [go there] in the morning and [come back] in the evening. We were looking forward to it.)

L: Dobrý nápad. A čo, čo sa stalo? (Good idea. And what, what happened?)

J: Počasie nebolo najlepšie, bolo veľmi horúco a stále hlásili silné búrky. Tak sme nešli nikam. (The weather wasn’t the best, it was very hot and they were constantly announcing strong storms. So, we didn’t go anywhere.)

A: Presne tak! Nevyhrali sme. Bol to veľmi zlý zápas.
C: Ja som to nevidel. Nevedel som, že sme mali hrať včera.
A: Čože? Veď som ti o tom poslal SMS-ku.
C: Videl som tvoju SMS-ku, ale nerozumel som jej.
A: Nerozumel?

In the last episode, I gave you a simple explanation of how to make the past tense of Slovak verbs. Today we’re going to practice some irregular Slovak verbs in the past tense. We already had one irregular verb and that was the verb byť - to be. We are going to review it plus learn how to make a negation from it.

Slovak lesson
Negation of the verb byť - to be:
Singular:
1. nebol som (I was not - m.), nebola som (f.)
2. nebol si (you were not – m.), nebola si (f.)
3. nebol (he was not - m.)
    nebola (she was not – f.)
    nebolo (it was not – n.)
 Plural:
1. neboli sme (we were not)
2. neboli ste (you were not)
3. neboli (they were not)

Verb ísť- to go:
Singular:  
1. išiel som (I went - m.), išla som (I went – f.)                       
2. išiel si (you went – m.), išla si (you went – f.)                   
3. išiel (he went - n.)
     išla (she went – n.)
     išlo (it went – n.)
Plural:
1. išli sme (we went)
2. išli ste (you went)
3. išli (they went)

Verb prísť- to come:

Singular:
1. prišiel som (I came - m.), prišla som (I came – f)
2. prišiel si (you came – m.), prišla si (you came – f.)
3. prišiel (he came - n.)
    prišla (she came – n.)
    prišlo (it came – n.)

  Plural:
1. prišli sme (we came)
2. prišli ste (you came)

Imperfective verb jesť:
Singular:
1. jedol som (I was eating - m.), jedla som (f.)             
2. jedol si (you were eating – m.), jedla si (f.)           
3. jedol (he was eating - m.)                                       
    jedla (she was eating – f.)
    jedlo (it was eating – n.)
Plural:
1. jedli sme (we were eating)

Perfective verb zjesť:
Singular:
1. zjedol som (I ate - m.), zjedla som (I ate – f.)                   
2. zjedol si (you ate – m.), zjedla si (you ate – f.)

    zjedlo (it ate – n.)

 Plural:
