Today's lesson is about past tense of some Slovak verbs.  You will review the irregular Slovak verb  byť (to be)  in the past tense and learn how to make a negation from it.

Today I will give you a simple explanation of how to make the past tense of Slovak verbs. Then
you’re going to practice some irregular Slovak verbs in the past tense. We already had one irregular verb and that was the verb byť - to be. We are going to review it plus learn how to make a negation from it.

Slovak lesson
Verb mať - to have:
Singular:                         
1. mal som (I had - m.), mala som (I had – f.)
2. mal si (you had – m.), mala si (you had – f.)
3. mal (he had)
    mala (she had)
    malo (it had)
  Plural:
1. mali sme (we had)
2. mali ste (you had)
3. mali (they had)

To negate, use the prefix ne-:
Singular:
1. nemal som (I did not have /I didn’t have - m.)
    nemala som (I didn’t have – f.)
2. nemal si (you didn’t have – m.)
    nemala si (you didn’t have – f.)
3. nemal (he didn’t have)
    nemala (she didn’t have)
    nemalo (it didn’t have)
Plural:
1. nemali sme (we did not have/we didn’t have)
2. nemali ste (you didn’t have)
3. nemali (they didn’t have)

 Verb robiť - to do or to make:
Singular:
1. robil som (m.), robila som (f.) (I was doing/making)
2. robil si (m.), robila si (f.) (you were doing/making)
3. robil (he was doing/making)
    robila (she was doing/making)
    robilo (it was doing/making)
Plural:
1. robili sme (we were doing/making)
2. robili ste (you were doing/making)
3. robili (they were doing/making)

Verb urobiť - to do or to make:
Singular:
1. urobil som (m.), urobila som (f.) (I did/made)

Slovak lesson
In the last episodes we talked only about the singular form of the verb byť - to be. Today we are are going to use the 1st, the 2nd, and the 3rd person plural.
1st  person plural: boli sme (we were) or: my sme boli
2nd person plural: boli ste (you were)  or: vy ste boli
3rd  person plural: boli (they were)       or: oni/ony boli

Dialogue:
A: Dobrý deň, susedia. Máte veľké kufre. Odchádzate?
B: Nie, prichádzame.
A: Kde ste boli?
B: Boli sme na dovolenke.
A: A kde ste boli na dovolenke?
B: Boli sme pri mori.
A: Boli ste v Bulharsku?
B: Nie, boli sme v Chorvátsku.

In the Slovak lesson we’re going to learn more about the past tense of the verb byť - to be (feminine gender). You will learn how to ask “Where were you?” in Slovak, and give a possible answer to it. At the end of this episode, you can find a short story about the coronation days in Slovak.

Slovak lesson
Past tense of the Slovak verb byť - to be in the 1st, the 2nd and the 3rd person singular, feminine gender.
1st person: bola som (I was - feminine gender)  or: ja som bola 

2nd person: bola si (you were – feminine gender) or: ty si bola

3rd person: bola (she was – feminine gender)     or: ona bola

Dialogue:
1.     Viera, kde si bola včera? (Viera, where were you yesterday?)
2.     Kedy? (When?)
3.     Včera poobede. Kde si bola? (Yesterday afternoon. Where were you?)
4.     Bola som doma. (I was home.)
5.     Nebola si. Tvoja mama ťa nemohla nájsť. (You were not. Your mom could not find you.)
6.     Tak som asi bola v záhrade. (So, I was probably in the garden.)
7.     Nebola si tam. (You where not there.)
8.     Ako to vieš? (How do you know?)
9.     Bola som sa tam pozrieť. (I was there to look [for you].)
10. Možno som bola u susedov. (Maybe I was at neighbors.)
11. Nebola si. Tvoja mama bola u susedov a oni povedali, že si tam nebola. (You were not. Your mom was at the neighbors and they said you weren’t there.)
12. Už viem! Bola som vo vani. (I know! I was in a bathtub.)
13. Naozaj? Mama ťa volala, nepočula si ju? (Realy? [Your] Mom was calling you, didn’t you hear her?)
14. Nie, mala som slúchadlá na ušiach. (No, I had headphones on  my ears.)

Lastly, you are going to practice Slovak in two, not one, but two short stories.

Slovak lesson
Past tense of the Slovak verb byť - to be in the 1st and the 2nd person in singular, masculine gender. 
1st person: bol som (I was - masculine gender)       or: ja som bol
2nd person: bol si (you were – masculine gender) or: ty si bol

Short dialogue:
M: Ahoj, Jakub. Kde si bol včera? (Hello, Jakub. Where were you yesterday?)
J:   Ahoj, Martin. Bol som doma. Prečo? (Hello, Martin. I was home. Why?)
M: Ty si bol doma? (Literaly: You were home?)
J:   Hej, ja som bol doma, prečo? (Yeah, I was home, why?)
M: V meste bol veľký koncert. (In the city was a big concert.)
J:   No a čo? (So what?)
M: Že no a čo? Veď to bola bomba! (So what? That was the bomb! = super good)
J: *Fakt? Také dobré? Bol si tam? (Really? So good? Where you there?) *That’s not a swear word!
M: Jasné! Ty si tam mal byť tiež. Nepamätáš? (Of course! You were supposed to be there too. Don’t you remember?)
J:   Nie. (No.)
M: Bóže, ty si bol asi opitý, keď sme o tom hovorili. (Gosh, you were probably drunk when we were talking about it.)
J:   Daj pokoj, vieš, že nepijem. (Leave me alone, you know that I don’t drink.)
M: Dobre, nechajme to teraz. Poďme dnes do kina. Čo povieš? (All right, we‘ll let it be now. Let’s go to a movie [theater] today.)
J:   Okej. Je mi to jedno. Poďme. (OK. I don’t care. Let’s go.)

Past tense of the verb  byť - to be - 3rd person singular:
bol (he was - masculine gender)      or: on bol
bola (she was – feminine gender)   or: ona bola

Simple sentences:
1.     On / Peter bol na Slovensku. (He / Peter was in Slovakia.
2.     Ona / Zuzana bola v Bratislave. (She / Susan was in Bratislava.)
3.     Ono / Malé dieťa bolo v kočíku. (It / A little child was in a stroller.)

Short sentences with nouns and adjectives in the nominative case:
1.     To je skorá zelenina. (This is an early [growing] vegetable.)
2.     To je sladká cibuľa. (This is a sweet onion.)
3.     Cesnak je zdravý. (Garlic is healthy.)
4.     Pečený zemiak je lepší ako varený. (A baked potato is better than a boiled one.)
5.     Mrkva a petržlen idú do polievky. (Carrot and parsley go into a soup.)

Short sentences with nouns and adjectives in the accusative case:
1.     Moja babka sadí zeleninu. (My grandma is planting/plants vegetables.)
2.     Tóno nemá rád kapustu. (Anthony doesn’t like cabbage.)
3.     Chcete (formal) paradajky? (Do you want tomatoes?)
4.     Áno, aj papriku. (Yes, peppers too.)
5.     Prosím si uhorku. (Please, can I have cucumber?)

In the Slovak lesson, we’re going to learn plural of inanimate (not living) nouns. I will teach you how to say “Happy Mother’s Day!” in Slovak. At the end of this episode, you can find my story called “The best mommy in the world.”

Slovak lesson
Masculine Gender:
1.     dom, domy (house, houses) 
2.     strom, stromy (tree, trees)
3.     dvor, dvory (yard, yards)
4.     park, parky (park, parks)
5.     stôl, stoly (table, tables) 

Feminine Gender ending in a hard consonant:
1.     kniha, knihy (book, books)
2.     stolička, stoličky (chair, chairs)
3.     chladnička, chladničky (refrigerator, refrigerators)

Feminine Gender ending in a soft consonant:
1.     ulica, ulice (street, streets)
2.     skriňa, skrine (wardrobe, wardrobes)
3.     vaňa, vane (bathtub, bathtubs)

Neuter gender:
1.     mesto, mestá (town, towns)
2.     auto, autá (car, cars)
3.     okno, okná (window, windows)
4.     svetlo, svetlá (light, lights)
5.     umývadlo, umývadlá (sink, sinks)

 Short sentences 

1.     Každá krajina má mestá. (Every country has towns.)
2.     Každé mesto má ulice. (Every town has streets.)
3.     Každá ulica má domy. (Every street has houses.)
4.     Každý dom má okná. (Every house has windows.)
5.     Moja mama pozerá cez okno von. (My mom is looking out of the window.
6.     Ahoj, mami! (Hello, mom!)
7.     Želám ti šťastný Deň Matiek! (I wish you happy Mother’s Day!)
8.     Ďakujem. Šťastný Deň Matiek aj tebe! (Thanks. Happy Mother’s Day to you, too!)
