In this episode, Lee J. Strang, John W. Stoepler Professor of Law & Values at the University of Toledo College of Law, discusses his book "Originalism's Promise: A Natural Law Account of the American Constitution," which is published by Cambridge University Press. Strang begins by explaining what he means by "originalism," and why he thinks the different versions of originalism are ultimately consistent with each other. He argues that courts should engage in "good-faith" originalism when interpreting the Constitution, and reflects on how that is consistent with good governance and the common good. And he suggests that this kind of originalism is consistent with how people actually think about constitutional values.
