Let’s talk about race…racism is something which is very prevalent in today’s society. UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination defines racism as any action, practice, policy, law, speech or incident which has an effect, (whether intentional or not) of undermining anyone’s enjoyment of their human rights, based on their actual or perceived ethnic minority, or national origin or background, where that background is that of a marginalized or historically subordinated group. In Ireland, in 2019 alone, there were 530 reports of racist incidents. 50 of which involved racial assaults, the highest ever since INAR began to record in 2013. Furthermore, hate speech accounts for 174 of this overall figure with 113 incidences occurring on social media. Racism has many dimensions in Ireland including Anti-Black; Anti-Traveller; Anti-Roma; Islamophobia; Antisemitism; Xenophobia and Gendered Racism. The death of George Floyd on May 25 sparked a passionate awakening of public awareness of racism…. Don’t let it be a trend, be an ally – combat racism in Ireland.
