Graveyards are a dynamic and useful element of the game of Magic. As many experienced players know, zone changes for cards can be very powerful to abuse and the graveyard primed for that abuse. Andy launches a discussion about the nuances of using the graveyard and how the uses a commander and strategy invite go beyond a general theme and get into particulars that can be important and critical to improving success in the strategy. Since WotC put out some new starter decks for commander players, we've been thinking about this concept a lot. What is a starter deck's purpose? How can they be used? Who are they for? As we got into this idea, we decided to take a crack at brewing a handful of our own starter deck lists for commander players. Join us as we talk about how we think they can be used. You can always find our deck lists on our Patreon supporter Discord server. We all look at people's deck lists on the web. Whether it's the list of a friend or the list of stranger, it's always helpful to figure out if the deck is truly functional. Andy and Kyle outline what they are looking for when they look at decks on the web. From surveying the basics for function to diving into the deck's game plan. They also dive into a handful of random decks to see if they can put their principles to work. We have had a lot of discussions over the last few years about tutors and how they impact the vibes of a game and how to build decks and how we treat the colors of the game. Andy and Kyle get into what it has been like the back half of the year to not have anything beyond land tutors in our playgroup. The year is coming to a close, so it's time to do a survey of a handful of cards you might consider for the other 99 in your decks. Kyle and Andy run through cards suggested and vetted by listeners and throw in a few others for good measure. Ever wonder if a commander has the potential for a build that isn't represented in the EDHREC data? Andy and Kyle talk through a couple of questions worth asking to see if we can broaden a commander's design into alternative deck designs. What are the hoops that commanders ask you to jump through, and how can we jump through that hoop in a different way? Or are there multiple hoops and we only need to jump through one to get an effective output? Kyle then jumps into a couple of example brews with Tocasia, Dig Site Mentor, and General Marhault Elsdragon to see if there are alternative ways to think about these commanders. We're all on the hype train for new cards and new concepts and new decks with the new hotness. But… before you go get into all that's new, let's take a stroll down memory lane to see if there are any sweet ideas we may have passed along the way. Andy takes us through part 1 with listener decks from Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, and Innistrad: Crimson Vow. We're coming at you with our favorite yum yucking series! It's been a while since we've taken a popular commander and told the madding crowd enough is enough, but let's take a look at The Ur-Dragon. Kyle and Andy discuss why the popular legend has such an unrelenting stranglehold on dragon tribal decks. From examining the capacity of the tribe to carry on without all the staples of every color, the new legends available, the gross price of The Ur-Dragon, and digging into a variety of decks, hopefully, there's a compelling case to put that dragon into your collection binder for good.
