Nick sets up a look at and conversation about trends that he's been seeing emerge in the design of red as it is relevant to commander players. We take a look at different things from how you get access to more cards, mana, and bigger, splashier spells to push games to their red end. How many deck ideas have you drafted, but never got around to putting into sleeves? Kyle and Andy take a dive into a few brews from times of yore that they tinkered with but never got around to collecting the cards, sleeving up, and bringing to a table. We explore whether we thought ideas would work, or if we were capable, or if we thought the group would respond well to the deck. And we disabuse each other of some perhaps unfounded reasons for not building these brews. (00:00:00) - Introduction (00:03:15) - Why Might One Leave It as an Idea? Andy shares the joys and pains of rebuilding an EDH roster. You heard from Kyle last time talk about his deliberate approach to building a new roster of decks. In this episode, Andy shares his wildly different experience, particularly has a player who had a roster of decks that were refined to a specific palette and how he used a list of "wants" to guide the process of rising from the dust of the exercise. The Ragnarok happened. What did it do to the group? Andy and Kyle set up some context for what the experiment of completely dissolving a roster of decks has been like. Kyle then takes Andy on a deep dive analysis of where his experience started and how he used that to build a deliberate guide for designing a new roster he could feel good about. Are those pet concepts in a deck really getting the flavor you want into your games? Andy and Kyle talk about flavoring the baked potato that is our commander decks. Is that niche card or category delivering on the imagined interaction when the deck was brewed, giving you a nuanced and satisfyingly flavorful Magic experience? Or are there cases where we might be better served by getting back to basics with a deck and just delivering on a known Magic palette pleaser?
