Legendary Creature - Podcast

We all have an understanding that commanders can serve different roles for a deck, whether as a strategy or providing benefit for implementing a strategy. But Andy proposes that we give some attention to the idea that some commanders can get us started, but can then be abandoned as the strategy gets going. Andy shares a variety of decks that exemplify this idea of a commander that can provide resources to get rolling, but that don't need to be present for success. Winning is a key element of Magic: the Gathering, but it's an unusual proposition in commander. That unusual space can make for varied expectations and feelings about winning. Kyle and Andy talk about the fine line between playing the game and being realistic about what we can achieve in this format while enjoying being at a table with friends. We've got a guest joining us today in Joey of EDHRECast. Joey joins to get deep with us as we talk about commanders who tend to earn the ire of opponents before the game even starts. We get into the various ways a commander may call for attention despite the game actions playing out in front of us and how many of those commanders may fit better into the 99 of some decks. It's been a long time since we've done our meta gaming series where we talked about methods to contain common elements of the game you can regularly expect opponents to abuse. But it's time for an addition to the series as treasure tokens have proven to be a leyline getting weaved throughout the game. Andy illustrates how treasure has become proliferated throughout the format and the impact it can have on games. Andy then shares a list of cards suggested by listeners for containing the impact of treasure tokens. You can find lists and deck lists on our #lists-from-the-pod channel of our Discord server. We've talked about unconventional builds for commanders in the past on our Alternative Build Paths episode. We're picking that idea up again and exploring ways that listeners are taking commanders that have a notorious build or archetype and how they have found a unique way to experience and play with that commander. There are cards in this game that are obviously powerful. There are cards that elicit a strong reaction. But there are also those cards that alter behavior at a table just based on their sheer gravitational pull to adapt to the presence of that card. Andy takes us into an exploration of a variety of just such cards and looks at where we might play them, how they change the game and what pitfalls might accompany these cards. Mana is a highly covered subject when it comes to this game we all love. But as aware as we all are to its importance to a successful game, have we given it specific thought. Kyle takes Andy into some thoughts he's been exploring to see if we can glean specific insights to how our mana base is performing in our decks.
