Welcome to Episode 127: The Tale of Spring-Heeled Jack! Victorian England was an exciting time of progress and growth, but you can’t have growth without a few growing pains. By 1825, London was declared the largest city in the world, and its infrastructure struggled to keep up with the boom in industry and immigration. As London scrambled to find solutions to pressing issues such as housing, plumbing, and transportation, the newly formed London Metropolitan Police Force grappled with the issue of rising crime. We all know the story of Jack The Ripper, the notorious serial killer who preyed on Victorian sex workers, but before he could rear his ugly head in 1888, a different Jack was busy terrorizing the streets of London. Beginning his reign of terror in 1837 and, according to some, lurking on Britain’s darkened streets and rooftops still today, this Jack would come to be known as: Spring-Heeled Jack. Come with us on a journey as we explore the story that would eventually be dubbed “The Victorian Era’s First Urban Legend”.

Paris is a city famous for romantic sights and sounds; however, beneath the glamor, a dirty secret threatens to swallow the city whole. An ancient labyrinth of tunnels- most of which is unexplored and illegal to enter- winds over 200 miles. Not only are the tunnels filled to the brim with ancient corpses , but the walls lure the lost to their deaths with a low WHISPER. Some believe if you follow the maze all the way to the end, you will find the gates of hell! And don't worry, if you can't find the end...at least you died trying. Right?

Lake Superior is considered to be one of the most haunted lakes of all time due to the insanely high number of unrecovered shipwrecks and bodies that litter the lake floor. In fact, Lake Superior has earned two foreboding nicknames: “The Lake That Never Gives Up Her Dead” and “The Graveyard of the Great Lakes”. Lake Superior has also earned the title of being one of the “Top 10 Most Haunted Lakes in the World”. Today we learn about the most famous of all of the bodies still entombed on the lakebed floor: “Old Whitey”. Whitey’s corpse is found floating inside the engine room of the SS Kamloops, which sank on the Canadian side of Lake Superior in the 1920s and has never been removed. Divers report seeing Old Whitey’s corpse AND his ghost floating around the ship, following them throughout the wreckage. And if that weren’t scary enough, we also delve into the the fear known as “submechanophobia”, which Aly definitely has.

**SKIP TO 00:13:19 TO GET TO THE STORY**
This week Nat enlightens Aly on a highly debated topic within the paranormal community: The Black Eyed Children. Commonly referred to as "B.E.K.", these mysterious haunted kids show up demanding to be let inside whatever threshold divides them from their prey. Often sighted in parking lots, deserted alleys, and the doorsteps of isolated homes, the B.E.K. appear to be human children aside from one horrifying detail... their eyes are gigantic black holes. Sources for this episode are varied, as most sightings derive from oral tradition and personal accounts. It’s up to you, the listener, to decide what is fact or fantasy.
