Game-Based Learning plays a significant role in teaching by causing students to collaborate, communicate, interact, and work in teams. Strategic games strengthen the functioning of the brain. Gaming generates a dynamic which can inspire learners to develop skills and build an emotional connection to learning and subject matter. Dr. Matthew Farber, Ed.D. is an Assistant Professor of Technology, Innovation and Pedagogy (TIP) at the University of Northern Colorado, and founder of the Gaming SEL Lab. His research is at the intersection of game-based learning (GBL) and social and emotional learning (SEL). He studies affinity spaces of educators who use games in classrooms and how they afford student agency while also teaching skills of empathy, design thinking, and systems thinking. He also works in youth initiatives around game design as a form of self-expression. He joined myself and my identical twin brother Keith McShan to discuss the impact of Game-Based Learning.

According to  educationdata.org  and the US Department of Education: 20% of college students whose classes were moved online during the pandemic indicated it was a major challenge to find a quiet place for online instruction 33% of post-secondary school administrators indicate they will continue to offer both remote and online course options even after their campuses have reopened and normal operations resumed. Which raises the question what sort of challenges does teaching a course primarily online cause for teachers and students alike?  For some answers I turned to some Wayne State University students who have a good grasp on the issue. As a sports journalist, there has been a dramatic shift on how we cover and consume sports in a newsroom. The advancement of social media has fundamentally transformed how we perceived all angles of the process as well. Dr. Craig Greenham, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Windsor. Before joining the academic ranks, he was a sports journalist. While covering sports, Dr. Greenham’s interest in the history that shaped and provided meaning to current events as well as the underlying sociocultural layers of athletics prompted a shift in career toward deeper scholarly inquiry. The primary focus of Dr. Greenham’s research is North American professional sports – particularly baseball, hockey and Canadian football. He joined me this week to have an engaging discussion on the evolution of sports journalism and the intersection of sports history.
