The movie, The Interview, has caused a lot of chaos. It depicts an assassination attempt on the life of North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un. North Korea is furious about the premise of this movie. The Senate Intelligence Committee released a report pertaining to the Central Intelligence Agency's Detention and Interrogation Program. The report details actions by a number of CIA officials, including torturing prisoners and providing misleading information to government officials and the media.
Examples of the torture and abuse are:
The CIA force fed prisoners orally or anally in order to establish total control over the detainee. At least five CIA detainees were subjected to unnecessary rectal rehydration or rectal feeding. At least one prisoner had rectal damage normally associated with violent rape.
Children or family members of prisoners were threatened with rape and murder.
There were mock executions, waterboarding, and ice water baths.
The torture suffered by the prisoners has led to serious mental harm and at least 26 of the 119 prisoners were improperly detained.
In a recent poll conducted by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal, 51 percent say the interrogation practices were acceptable, while 28 percent say they went too far and were wrong. Also, 45 percent think these techniques should be used in the future, versus 28 percent who disagree. So a majority of Americans believe the harsh interrogation tactics used by the CIA were acceptable and should be used to thwart potential future terrorist threats.
