Good book which is well-worth the read!
The Imperial Arm
Knights of the Imperial Elite Book 1
The author indicates that this fictitious story is meant to provide escapism in a realistic setting, without adhering strictly to the characteristics of the time period. Note that this story includes violent happenings and explicit sexual situations. No spoiler with this review.
In 1256, Lady Brennaâs cruel father of Carthmore Keep forces her to travel to Dorling Castle where she is to marry Lord Gunther, a thief and sadist who has tortured, raped, and murdered others. Brennaâs sister, Linnea, escapes their father and travels to Dorling Castle, where Brenna helps to hide her. Meanwhile, Guntherâs twin brother Darrius of Blackstone, King Henryâs most trusted emissary, is sent to "snuff out" an enemy of the Crown by infiltrating Dorling Castle, positioning himself by pretending to be his brother-Gunther. This includes, of course, marriage to unsuspecting Lady Brenna, a pawn whom Darrius believes will be better off without a hellish marriage to Gunther, and whom King Henry can later have married to someone more worthy. Darrius is aided by his cousin, Rowan, the McLeod. Following a sleeping draught put in their ale, Gunther and a few of his most loyal men are carted off to the dungeon by several of Darrius's loyal men, who later left to avoid detection. There are twists and turns within the story.
This is a well-written, stand-alone book which is interesting enough to encourage the reader to purchase additional books by the author. It is a historical romance wrapped in an unusual story which includes realistic historical events. This is the first time that I have read a book by this author but it will not be the last.
Absolutely Wonderful Medieval Romance At Its' Best!
The Imperial Arm and His Elite Guard - Book 1. This book is one of the best medieval stories I have read in a while and I am really looking forward to following each of the Elite Guard in his own search for true love. It was heartwarming to read of Darrius's love for Brenna and her's for him. I was on 'constant alert' for Gunther - so glad when he met his end. I read this book non-stop and it will have a 'revered' place on my 'keeper' shelf.
