The Non Compliance sector is the wild west of the future.

This futuristic novel is outside my normal realm of reading material, but I really liked it. It is quirky and fun and a bit campy, and the main character is unusual and interesting. Its got heroes and villains and interesting stuff happening throughout the story. It is part romance, part mystery, part adventure set in some post apocalyptic world with a very active black market, especially for luxury goods. It is unusual and I will definitely read more about these people who have chosen not to be ruled and controlled and chipped. The non-compliance sector is like the wild west of the future. Might makes Right and people are still motivated by what motivates people today, but they are a particuarily tough crowd.

Cyberpunk with a compelling heroine

Shea Kelly chose to live in the Non-Compliance Sector of the United States, which has become a shade of its former self following a disastrous international war, rather than be implanted with a chip that would store her personal information. Spirited, strong-willed, and intelligent, she makes a living as a bartender and moonlights as a hacker-for-hire. Frustrated by the bullying and shenanigans of a new gangster in town, Shea reaches out to the NCS's established crime lord, whose name is Robert Jennings but is simply called Boss by most people. Boss may be a mobster who demands payment in exchange for protection, but unlike the newcomer, Danny, he maintains order and allows life to run smoothly.

Daniels paints a vivid picture of Shea's life in this rough world. Despite the bleakness of her situation, Shea has no desire to leave the NCS. At the very least, she can keep her independence here. She regularly clashes with drunken bar patrons and ruthless thugs, sometimes getting severely injured, and yet she takes her punches with her head held high. She truly isn't afraid of anything--not the goons, not the government, not the ongoing hardships of her life.

Shea eventually joins forces with Boss's right-hand man, Quinn Knightly, to find out what Danny's master plan is and get rid of him before he takes over the NCS. Some of the most captivating scenes in Non-Compliance are the dialogues between these two characters. Whereas Shea is a tough-talking smart aleck, Quinn is the strong-and-silent type who prefers to communicate via growls.

Her narration is straightforward, blunt, and sometimes curt, as though she wants to get her point across to the reader without wasting her breath on whining or flowery descriptions.

White knuckle expansion to the Universe Eventual saga!

Iâm loving the Universe Eventual world, and Helios just blew the doors off this evolving saga. The characters that we met in Chimera leap off the page as they coax the dormant space cruiser Chimera back to life. But as they enter deep space on their journey toward the burning world, old tensions riseâ and then explode. The descriptions of fractal space rocked me like the spaciest of Jimi Hendrix jams, whereas (spoiler alert) some of the battles faced by our heroes got freaky medieval. What they find at the end of their ride shook me to the core, and now Iâm just kinda pissed that book 3 ain't out yet. Hurry up and publish that book N.J. Tanger!

Great 2nd Book In the Series

I am a self-admitted book worm, and I have been the majority of my life. Here lately, I gravitate towards suspenseful books. Although not always my first choice (because of my age), I do also read YA novels. The majority of the YA novels that I read are very science fiction leaning. Because of this, I was very excited to get a chance to review the first book in this series. I had absolutely no issue with paying for the second book! Here are my thoughts on this book:

Pros: All of my favorite characters are back, especially my absolute favorite character, Theo. This book was very well written. It surprises me to know that it was written by three separate authors, because everything flows so well together. I love that all of the characters are really well developed. That helped me become invested in all of the main characters, even though I donât always like that actions that they take (Marcus, ahem).

Cons: None really. I didnât too much care for the way it ended, but as I have also read the next book in the series, my main gripe with this one is a moot point.

All in all, this book was very well written, and I flew threw it in one day.

Serious story meets hilarious sarcasm!

What made the experience of listening to Kidnapped the most enjoyable?

The voice actor is so very professional! But he sounds young enough to portray the vim, vigor, and sidesplitting snark of a sixteen-year-old! It jibes perfectly with the author's written narration. If only bigger, more supposedly-professional titles took so much care in matching up their manuscripts and voice actors.

What other book might you compare Kidnapped to and why?

The Devil You Know by Trish Doller. The Devil You Know has more edult scenarios, but there are few contemporary YA books that don't focus on romance or the supernatural. Phalanx Blood is a slowbuilder, but at heart it's a corporate cloak and dagger thriller from the perspective of just some hapless kid who's got to find a way to survive and get ahead..

What about James Simencs performance did you like?

I've read the electronic version of the book and found James Simenc's performance to hit the mark in almost every way. He sounds the right age. He can handle some very longwinded sentences while keeping them perfectly coherent. And his demeanor can go from tongue-in-cheek to serious, to scared, and to simmering rage in an instant. All the while he gives the impression there is an emotional reserve in place indicating there's much more boiling emotion inside but he just doesn't feel it right to express it. And that feels exactly right for the narrator/main charcter.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Definitely.

I understand this is Mr. Arrington's first attempt at a serial, and I will be following his work closely. His other ongoing series, Josh Anvil, is what first got Bruce on my radar. And I eagerly look forward to the production of new audiobooks as his series progresses.

Poor execution

Vincent is fired from the dead end where he works. Soon after he gets a call from a gaming company offering him the job of his dreams: becoming virtual reality game tester. The game is set towards the end of the 1920s, and he will have to find some jewels lost in the middle of the woods where a plane belonging to a rich family crashed some years before.

First of all, this book is not exactly written as a LitRPG, even though it describes the actions of the characters in the game. This could make it more accessible for people not really into LitRPG.

I found the premies quite interesting, but the execution was poor. The book basically narrates how Vince is hired, his experience in the game and a twist at the end of the story. The adventures during the game were just okay, but not enough to really get me hooked to the story. It was entertaining, yet, but thats it. I was expecting all the time for something to happen, like some serious issue related to the VR chamber.

This is one of those cases where I think the authors stretch a story over several volumes just for the sake of the sell. I think the story would really benefit from having this book just as an introduction to the real story: Vince gets hired, he plays the game, and then something happens. From there then I would develop the story, but keeping it in the same book, and shortening the gaming part considerably, since nothing important happens and the characters are quite plain. The important and disconcerting things happen outside the game, so I think the authors should have focused this book on that part.

The book is well written, so I was able to listen until the end, but what got me interested was that twist towards the end. It is a pity that the rest of the book did not get me interested enough, so I doubt I will continue this series.

J. Scott Bennett narration was great, as usual, and I think it was part of the reason why the gaming part was bearable. He has an ample range of voices and his character interpretations are very vivid.

Wow!

I never write reviews of the books I read, because I'm really lazy. However, I wanted to have a hand in sparking more people's interest in this book, as well as these two fine authors! I had trouble putting it down when I had more important things to do, and I was disappointed when it was finished and there was no more to read.

This is one of the best books I've read in years

This is one of the best books I've read in years! The writers capture personalities of both men and women that are so in depth and believable. The action is non stop. It is presented in such a real manner that you can't help wondering what you would do in the same situations. Kudos to the authors! I can't wait until they publish more works!

Okay, now that I have miraculously slept, after finishing Serpentine Fire...

What a ride!

Just when I thought the worst thing imaginable happened to all these characters, in this initial disaster...I got shoved onto a behemoth roller coaster ride of a story, tossed hither and yon, holding on for dear life, till the final page!

A great read! From the attention grabbing opening paragraph to not being able to put it down until I finished it I was glad that it didn't fall into the usual crop of giant beastie books. The supporting characters were interesting, the plot had some nice twists and the descriptive narrative was accurate without being silly. Can't wait for their next effort!

What a delighful story with lovely twist

What an interesting twist to the future and all it brings in this paranormal/Sci-Fi book. I really like the different mixture of people and how they learn to live together. There are some good times but more bad as a brother and sister try their best to make the most of the life they find their selves placed in. The author really goes into detail that really makes this story come to life with the vivid details she gives. It was very entertaining grabbing your attention from the first page until the last. The dreams are a wild trip you do not want to miss. There are some very surprising twists along with a few heartbreaking ones.

Ms. Norris does an outstanding job her character voices are given lots of emotions that you have no trouble relating to. Her male voices are just as good as her females ones. You know what each one is feeling as they go down the path they must. There are no repeating of words, no background noises, if any breaks where taken I could not tell. The audio is very clear and crisp that really gives you a very enjoyable listen. I thought the narrator really bought out each characters feeling, you could hear the hurt, lost, love, caring and anger in her voice as she plays out the story. Her voice is very pleasant in and out of character. It is a voice you can get lost in and you will forget you are listening to an audio. This is the first work I have listened to of hers, I am very much looking forward to listening to more of her audios.
