The notorious AOC, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, could not stop complaining about how Donald Trump did nothing for her grandmother in Puerto Rico when a hurricane damaged her home. Last week, conservatives raised over $100,000 on GoFundMe to put a new roof over her head. In fact, conservatives gave enough to lift her grandmother’s entire neighborhood out of poverty. AOC’s response was to compel her grandmother to refuse the money and keep living in her shack. She’d rather see her grandmother suffer than accept help from Trump supporters. This callousness means she doesn’t care about her abuela at all - she only cares about using her as a cudgel to beat conservatives about the head and ears. AOC is a self-absorbed prima donna who should be ignored by everybody from now until the end of time.

But those times will come and they will be the defining moments in your life. Athanasius was exiled six times for defending the truth of Scripture. Bryan Fischer here with today’s Life and Liberty Minute. Desmond Doss entered the army in 1942 as a conscientious objector and served as a medic, just like my father. Because of his religious convictions, Doss refused to carry a weapon, which earned him abuse from the men in his unit, who tried to get him to transfer out. They only grudgingly accepted him. He was with them in Okinawa in 1945 when they got cut to ribbons attacking a Japanese stronghold. Everyone but Doss retreated from the plateau where dozens lay wounded. Under fire, he began to treat them and move them one at a time to a place where he could rope them down to safety. Every time he prayed, “Dear God, please let me get just one more man.” By the end of that day, he had single-handedly saved 75 GIs and earned the Congressional Medal of Honor. Sometimes you can help win a war without firing a shot.

Bryan Fischer here with today’s Life & Liberty Minute. Jack Lucas is a name worth remembering on Memorial Day. After Pearl Harbor, Jack, at age 14, begged his mother to help him enlist in exchange for a promise to someday finish school. When his unit boarded a troop ship for Iwo Jima, he stowed away instead of reporting for guard duty so he could join a combat unit. Just after his 17th birthday, he hit the beach and a day later was fighting in a Japanese trench when he threw himself on two grenades which landed near his comrades. Assuming he was dead, a medic started to take his dog tags when he saw a finger twitch. After months of treatment and recovery, he returned to school as promised, and entered the ninth grade with a Congressional Medal of Honor around his neck. We owe our freedom to such warriors. Father, we thank you for giving America men like Jack Lucas.

Bryan Fischer here with the Life & Liberty Minute. Valedictorian Elizabeth Turner of Hillsdale High School in Michigan wrote a graduation speech that mentioned Jesus Christ. School officials freaked and told her she couldn’t. But the Michigan constitution says, “Every person may freely speak, (and) express his views on all subjects.” There is nothing in there that says, “Unless you are talking about Christianity or speaking at a graduation ceremony.” The First Amendment guarantees the right to the free exercise of religion and to freedom of speech. When First Liberty Institute reminded the school of the Constitution, the school quickly folded, and Elizabeth will now be free to share her faith in Jesus with her classmates. Good for her, and shame on this school for its ignorance. Graduation should be about celebration, not censorship.

Bryan Fischer here with today’s Life and Liberty Minute. The Brookings Institute on the left and the Heritage Foundation on the right agree about one thing: fathers matter. The poverty rate for single parents with children in the United States is thirty seven percent. The poverty rate for married couples with children is just seven percent. Being raised in a married family reduces child poverty by eighty-two percent. Brookings says boys are more affected than girls by the lack of a male role model in the family. Heritage says the principal cause of child poverty is the absence of married fathers in the home. Bryan Fischer here with today’s Life & Liberty Minute. The sharpest political divide in America is not between whites and blacks but between people who are married and people who aren’t. Researcher Brad Wilcox has observed that married Americans keep voting Republican. In 2020, married men voted for President Trump 56-42 while married women voted for him 52-48. And this represents an increase since 2016. Entire communities with more married men and women were markedly more likely to vote conservative. Marrieds tend to have more conservative views on things like taxes, role of government, and education. Marriage is now the best predictor of voting trends. No wonder regressives try to undermine the institution of marriage every chance they get. If you want to reform  American politics, the best thing you can do is get married and stay married.

Police are being defunded at eye-watering rates, leaving the residents of one city after another defenseless against criminals as crime and murder rates go into the stratosphere. What’s the answer? The answer is the Second Amendment, which guarantees to every American the right to own and carry arms in his own defense and the defense of his family. Texas this week became the 21st state to pass “Constitutional Carry” legislation, which means the only permit you need to carry a weapon for your own defense is the Constitution of the United States. Folks are buying handguns at the fastest rate ever, including 16 million in the first four months this year, which is up 30% over last year. Americans are realizing that if Joe Biden will not allow the cops to protect us, we’ll have to do it ourselves.

Bryan Fischer here with today’s Life & Liberty Minute. Regressive police reforms are making big cities less safe, not more. Fewer police mean more crime and more murders. More police mean less crime and fewer murders. St. Louis is only the latest example. St. Louis already has the highest murder rate in the country, and its new mayor is about to goose that figure by getting rid of 100 officers and reducing the police budget by $4 million. In the 1990s, New York was a cesspool of crime. Mayor Rudy Giuliani pacified the Big Apple by adding more cops to the beat and implementing a proactive stop and frisk policy in the most crime-ridden parts of town. Times Square was cleared of prostitution and pornography and the city became an attractive tourist destination again. If you thought the murder rate in St. Louis was bad now, just wait til this time next year.
