Understanding another person is sacred work. It is slow, deliberate, heart-level labor, the kind that requires patience, curiosity, and a humble approach. You can’t shortcut it. You can’t fake it. If you don’t know a person at the level of the soul, all your efforts to connect deeply will eventually flatten into function. You will live as polite roommates instead of intimate companions, coworkers instead of co-laborers, acquaintances instead of allies. Every relationship, whether marriage, friendship, or discipleship, will rise or fall on the depth of understanding between two people. And that’s why so many relationships fail. Understanding someone takes more than observation; it takes incarnation: the willingness to step into another’s world, to see through their eyes, to feel with their heart. Biff and Mable never learned how.
