Whenever you sin in response to what you are not getting from someone—even when that thing you want is good—you step into a dangerous place. The desire itself might be righteous, but your reaction to being denied reveals the true condition of your heart. Before you can move forward with that person, before you can offer counsel or correction, you must let the Lord correct you. Changing yourself is typically the hardest thing to do, but it is also the best way to help another person change. We all know what it’s like to live with disappointment. You hope, you pray, you try to influence, and the other person still won’t budge. Sometimes they won’t even listen. You start out caring deeply for them, but as the months pass, that care evolves into frustration. What began as compassion now feels like control, and instead of feeling burdened for them, you feel burdened by them. That’s where Biff found himself.

Understanding another person is sacred work. It is slow, deliberate, heart-level labor, the kind that requires patience, curiosity, and a humble approach. You can’t shortcut it. You can’t fake it. If you don’t know a person at the level of the soul, all your efforts to connect deeply will eventually flatten into function. You will live as polite roommates instead of intimate companions, coworkers instead of co-laborers, acquaintances instead of allies. Every relationship, whether marriage, friendship, or discipleship, will rise or fall on the depth of understanding between two people. And that’s why so many relationships fail. Understanding someone takes more than observation; it takes incarnation: the willingness to step into another’s world, to see through their eyes, to feel with their heart. Few things in the Christian life are as painful as watching someone you love refuse to change. You see the danger, you hear the excuses, you offer wisdom, and yet they walk straight toward the cliff. Sometimes you push too hard and break what was fragile; other times you pull back and feel the sting of regret. You wonder, What else can I do? This angst is the discipler’s dilemma: the tension between love and limits. You care deeply, but you cannot control outcomes. You can speak truth, pray fervently, and model grace, but you cannot make a heart repent. That realization can either crush you or comfort you, depending on what you believe about God. So here’s the question that every disciple-maker, parent, pastor, and friend must answer: Are you a restful soul who loves an unchanging person?

One of the most stretching and mysterious questions you’ll ever face as a disciple-maker is the tension between God’s sovereignty and human responsibility. How does divine initiative fit with human effort? Who moves first, and how do we cooperate without falling into pride on one side or passivity on the other? You have a recurring temptation. It won’t go away. It follows you into prayer, shadows you in worship, and occasionally whispers even during moments of joy.
