  • 01 Abuse Chapter 1 She Told You
“Abuse: What to Do When Someone Tells You” by Rick Thomas (Life Over Coffee, 2026) is a biblical counseling guide for the person someone confides in — pastor, counselor, or friend — not for survivors themselves (Thomas’s companion book, Victimized, is for them). Using a composite case study named Marlene, it covers what to do in that first raw hour, how to listen well, how to believe someone while still gently investigating, and where churches tend to overcorrect or underreact. Thomas writes from a biblical-counseling perspective, grounded in Galatians 6:1–2 and Proverbs 18:17, while making clear his critiques of church responses are never doubt that abuse is real.

  • The Problem with Caring Too Much or Over-Caring for Others
Loving people is the right instinct for any Christian. Scripture calls us to bear one another’s burdens, to weep with those who weep, to encourage the fainthearted, and to restore the fallen with gentleness. Caring is not optional. It is part of the very character of Christ formed in His people. But caring too much—what we might call over-caring—is something different. It looks like compassion on the surface, but it often drifts into something far less holy. Over-caring arises when a well-meaning believer begins to assume responsibility that belongs to God, to the situation, or to the struggler himself. It’s the moment when love morphs into control, fear, anxiety, micromanaging, or rescuing.

  • Tips On Helping the Person Who Does Not Want Help
Every Christian eventually meets the ache of watching someone they love walk away from wisdom. Maybe it’s a child making reckless choices, a friend entangled in sin, or a spouse hardened by pride. You see the drift before they do. You try to speak, pray, or reason, but it feels like you’re standing at the edge of a cliff yelling warnings into the wind. They don’t listen. They don’t want to. Few experiences expose our theology of love like this one. It’s easy to love the humble and responsive, but what about those who are stubborn, resistant, or cold? How do you stay engaged when every attempt at help seems to bounce off a wall?

  • The Hardest But Best Way to Help Someone Change
Whenever you sin in response to what you are not getting from someone—even when that thing you want is good—you step into a dangerous place. The desire itself might be righteous, but your reaction to being denied reveals the true condition of your heart. Before you can move forward with that person, before you can offer counsel or correction, you must let the Lord correct you. Changing yourself is typically the hardest thing to do, but it is also the best way to help another person change. We all know what it’s like to live with disappointment. You hope, you pray, you try to influence, and the other person still won’t budge. Sometimes they won’t even listen. You start out caring deeply for them, but as the months pass, that care evolves into frustration. What began as compassion now feels like control, and instead of feeling burdened for them, you feel burdened by them. That’s where Biff found himself.

  • Understanding Someone Is Work, But the Only Way to Build Well
Understanding another person is sacred work. It is slow, deliberate, heart-level labor, the kind that requires patience, curiosity, and a humble approach. You can’t shortcut it. You can’t fake it. If you don’t know a person at the level of the soul, all your efforts to connect deeply will eventually flatten into function. You will live as polite roommates instead of intimate companions, coworkers instead of co-laborers, acquaintances instead of allies. Every relationship, whether marriage, friendship, or discipleship, will rise or fall on the depth of understanding between two people. And that’s why so many relationships fail. Understanding someone takes more than observation; it takes incarnation: the willingness to step into another’s world, to see through their eyes, to feel with their heart. Biff and Mable never learned how.

  • How to Find Comfort Knowing You Can’t Change People
Few things in the Christian life are as painful as watching someone you love refuse to change. You see the danger, you hear the excuses, you offer wisdom, and yet they walk straight toward the cliff. Sometimes you push too hard and break what was fragile; other times you pull back and feel the sting of regret. You wonder, What else can I do? This angst is the discipler’s dilemma: the tension between love and limits. You care deeply, but you cannot control outcomes. You can speak truth, pray fervently, and model grace, but you cannot make a heart repent. That realization can either crush you or comfort you, depending on what you believe about God. So here’s the question that every disciple-maker, parent, pastor, and friend must answer: Are you a restful soul who loves an unchanging person?

  • Why Should I Disciple If God Has to Grant Repentance First?
One of the most stretching and mysterious questions you’ll ever face as a disciple-maker is the tension between God’s sovereignty and human responsibility. How does divine initiative fit with human effort? Who moves first, and how do we cooperate without falling into pride on one side or passivity on the other? Ultimately, the problem defies simple solutions. The tension between God’s control and our choices is not a puzzle to be solved, but a mystery to be worshiped. Yet, this mystery does not excuse inactivity. Just because we can’t fully explain God’s ways doesn’t mean we stop engaging in His work. One of our supporting members once asked an excellent question that frames this entire chapter.

  • How to Change, Chapter 9: What Is Christian Maturity?
Let’s say that you’re discipling someone. You’ve walked with them through the doctrine of repentance, Scripture, and prayer. You’ve listened, guided, prayed, and encouraged. But how would you know when you’re “done”? What does comprehensive discipleship actually look like in the life of a believer? That question led me to create the Christian Maturity Mind Map, a visual roadmap that outlines how the gospel grows from seed to fruit in a person’s life. It helps us see where we are in the sanctification journey, how to cooperate with the Spirit, and how to identify spiritual plateaus or regressions.
