This week on The Life Shift Podcast, MC McDonald shares her journey of overcoming trauma, navigating grief and family relationships, and finding success.
"I think if we can think about trauma and, and that point of healing as possible, then we can, we can enter into the healing process with a lot more hope than with this understanding that if you have trauma, that means you are somehow like marred or broken or, you know." - MC McDonald.
MC grew up in a small town with a big Catholic family. After a family member’s death, MC's world turned upside down, and she struggled to cope with the loss. She had been raised to believe that emotions should be managed and felt on her own, so she had very few tools to deal with her grief.
MC's old coping mechanisms worked for about six months, but then she started having intense panic attacks. The anxiety she had struggled with since childhood was breaking through, and it began to get in the way of her work. The panic attacks were happening everywhere, and she couldn't control them and didn't know what to do.
After reaching out for help, she realized she needed to figure out a different way of being in the world.
In this episode, MC shares her personal story of overcoming family trauma and grief. She talks about how she learned to cope with her emotions and used her experiences to help others. We'll also explore how to process trauma and grief and how to move forward. If you have ever experienced trauma or grief or are struggling to cope with difficult emotions, this episode is for you.
MC McDonald, Ph.D., is a research professor and life coach who specializes in the psychology and philosophy of trauma. Her work focuses on thinking critically about how we understand, define, and heal from traumatic experiences. After receiving her Ph.D. at Boston University, she has published several research articles, book chapters, and two books on trauma. In addition to her academic work, McDonald has a thriving life-coaching business and has created trauma-based curricula for nonprofit organizations in New York, Virginia, and California.

Elizabeth Rosenberg shares her personal journey from burnout to spiritual awakening.
“And I learned through therapy that I would also give myself migraines not only to give myself a time out but to punish myself for not being successful at what I had set out to do, which is just like mind-blowing to me because you're like, oh my God, like you did this to yourself.”
After experiencing severe corporate burnout, Elizabeth found herself in the emergency room with a migraine where she lost all her motor skills. Elizabeth was a very driven individual who had always been focused on work and self-validation. She would work 60-70 hours a week to prove her own self-worth and success to herself, and societal pressure to get married and have kids pushed her to throw herself into work. Elizabeth shares how her twin sister's success contributed to her own drive and how she felt the need to prove her own self-worth through her career.
Elizabeth realized that she would also give herself migraines to punish herself for not meeting her own expectations. She shares how her body was protecting itself by giving her migraines when she needed to rest. Elizabeth worked with a metaphysical healer who helped her realize that she is responsible for how she reacts and feels about everything. In this episode, Elizabeth reminds us of the importance of taking care of ourselves and finding balance in our lives.
Elizabeth Rosenberg is an entrepreneur, charismatic leader, and visionary who drives authentic change and purposeful impact through her work. In this episode, Laura Harless shares her journey of transforming her relationship with food and body to achieve a whole-body transformation. She discusses the importance of self-awareness and internal stabilization to avoid extremes in diet culture. Laura also shares her successful weight loss journey without medication or surgery and the importance of changing one's relationship with food.
"I tried everything that I thought was healthy. I tried, you know, eating foods that were baked, not fried, and not snacking between meals. I tried exercising 30 minutes a day, and I would do that for months at a time. Like six months was my longest, and I lost maybe 10 pounds. And so it was frustrating. I get back into my old habits because it wasn't working and repeat later on because I let society tell me that it was my problem and I had to fix it, and I let that in." - Laura Harless
But Laura's story is not just about weight loss. It's about rediscovering oneself without the weight. She emphasizes that weight struggles do not define her, but they are a significant part of who she is now and how she got to be the way she is. Laura encourages listeners to enjoy their journeys, whatever they may be, and to embrace the positive changes that come with them.
As a psychology instructor, Laura loves helping others reach their potential. Her story has been featured in several magazines, including Fitness Magazine in 2011, and on news outlets such as Chanel 6 Orlando. Laura's Facebook page, LaurasFitLife, is dedicated to helping others achieve their fitness goals and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Don't miss this inspiring conversation with Laura Harless.

In this episode, entrepreneur and financial expert Larry Sprung shares his journey of overcoming loss and tragedy in his family to help others. Larry's experiences taught him valuable lessons about the importance of mental health and seeking help when needed.
“If you're walking down the street and there's a pebble on the ground, and you pick up the pebble, and you put it right here up against your eye. It looks like a boulder. You're never gonna get around it. But if you take that same pebble and you put it out at arm's length and then you look at it, you're like, well, it's just a pebble. I could get around that thing”
Larry's mother's battle with cancer instilled a level of fight and battle in him. He also shares how his brother-in-law's suicide reinforced the idea that life is short and that if we're not healthy, the outcomes could be detrimental. As a result, Larry became passionate about raising awareness for mental health, serving on the National Board of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention for over 12 years and raising over $1.7 million through the Keith Milano Memorial Fund with his wife, Denise.
Larry encourages others to prioritize relationships and family and to create a life by design, not by default.
Larry Sprung is the founder and wealth advisor at Mitlin Financial, Inc® www.mitlinfinancial.com and the host of the Mitlin Money Mindset™ Podcast www.mitlinmoneymindset.com. He has been named an Investopedia Top 10 Advisor and has received several other industry recognitions. In this bonus Mother's Day episode of The Life Shift Podcast, I share a small portion of a letter that my dad wrote to me. The letter reflects on the life of my mother, Joan Gilhooly, who was a kind woman with a big heart. My mother tragically passed away at the young age of 32 while on a cross-country motorcycle trip with her boyfriend. This event turned my life upside down and forced me to experience grief and loss at a young age.
I reflect on how my mother's passing impacted my life and how it led me to seek out mother figures in my life. The most significant mother figure in my life was my grandmother, who I became very close to after my mother's passing. I share how my grandmother, born in 1933, had a difficult childhood where she lost her mother at the age of two. She understood what it was like for a child to grow up without a mother and wanted to make sure that I didn't have to go through the same thing. We spent a lot of time together, went on trips, and had a very special relationship.
I also talk about how I was able to say goodbye to my grandmother before she passed away. I share how I forced a conversation with her in which we said everything that we ever needed to say to each other. I left that conversation knowing that there was nothing left unsaid and that I was at peace with our relationship. When my grandmother passed away, I was by her side, and although it was devastating, I felt a calmness to it. I knew that she believed she was going to heaven and would be reunited with my mother, who was her best friend.
This episode serves as a tribute to the two women who inspired the creation of The Life Shift Podcast and, hopefully, reminds us of the importance of cherishing the relationships we have with our loved ones. My story is a reminder that even in the face of tragedy, we can find deep and meaningful connections with others that can help us through difficult times.
Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there!
