In this episode of The Life Shift Podcast, guest Olivia Dreizen Howell shares her personal story of going through a divorce as a single mother with two young children.
"I really knew my kids deserved a life that didn't include walking on eggshells all the time. And they deserved a mother that could show up for them. I mean, Matt, I have letters I wrote to my sons apologizing for the things I had to do to survive at that time. You know, and I was so scared that something would happen to me, and they wouldn't know that I believed in them, or that I thought that they were okay to be themselves, or that they could be whoever they wanted to be.”
She recounts how she met her ex-husband and how their relationship quickly progressed, leading to them moving in together and getting married. As the relationship evolved, she felt exhausted trying to be the person her ex-husband wanted her to be, and her eating issues were used against her in the relationship.
Olivia describes the pivotal moment when she realized her marriage was over and felt a sense of freedom when her ex-husband said he wanted a divorce. She talks about staying in the marital residence with her children and cleaning out everything that reminded her of her marriage. Olivia also shares her idea for a registry for people going through challenging moments like divorce where they could receive items they need when everything feels like it's crumbling around them.
Olivia Dreizen Howell is the co-founder and CEO of Fresh Starts Registry, the first and only platform for everything you need to begin again, including divorce or breakup, moving, career changes, stepping into your truth, or starting again after grief.

Newton Cheng, Director of Health and Performance at Google, world champion competitive powerlifter, and father, shares his story of growing up in a traditional Asian American family and feeling the pressure to achieve success by checking all the boxes. He talks about how this pressure led him to pivot from a career in engineering to a career in health and wellbeing.
"I'm not sure what happened, but in the moment, I started to cry, and I could feel like the tears just start welling up in my eyes, and I said, right now I'm struggling because the number of days that I'm proud of how I'm showing up as a father is going down and I don't know how to turn that around." - Newton Cheng
Newton was conditioned to believe that success was all about checking boxes, as his parents had a clause in their will that said he wouldn't receive his portion of the inheritance unless he graduated college. To Newton and his family, education was the key to a successful life, and he made sure he ticked all the boxes, got good grades, and achieved all his academic goals. However, as the pandemic hit and the world shut down, Newton found himself struggling to keep up with work demands while trying to be a present father to his two daughters.
In a vulnerable moment during a work meeting, Newton broke down in tears and shared his struggle with feeling like he was failing as a father. This moment of vulnerability led to a deeper understanding of himself and his priorities. Newton realized that he needed to be more open with his colleagues and family about his struggles to maintain a balance between his work and personal life.
Newton Cheng is a husband and father, competitive powerlifter, and Director of Health and Performance at Google. He has spent his career at Google developing, launching, and scaling global programs aimed at helping Googlers to thrive. He oversees a global portfolio of Google's physical and digital health and wellbeing amenities and explores how Google can leverage spaces, services, community, culture, and technology to support the physical, mental, social, and spiritual health of Googlers, their families, and neighbors.
Newton's journey of self-discovery and self-care is a reminder that we all need to prioritize our mental and emotional health to achieve true success in life. Newton's story is one of courage, vulnerability, and the power of change.

Jenny Dreizen shares her personal story of wanting to get married and start a family with her partner but struggling to get him to commit. She reflects on her own worthiness and the societal pressure to follow a certain path in life. In this episode of The Life Shift Podcast, Jenny talks about the intimacy of podcasting and how it allows for connections to be formed through deep conversations. She shares her experience of bonding with hosts and guests of A Fresh Story and how it feels like becoming part of a community. Listeners can relate to the feeling of forming connections with those they listen to and how these conversations can feel intimate and eye-opening.
"I was starved of love and affection. And I felt like if I could just get him to admit, to propose to me, I would get the dopamine hit of, oh yes, he does love me." - Jenny Dreizen
The conversation with Jenny also touches on the importance of being true to oneself and making choices that align with personal values and desires. It is a reminder that societal norms and expectations should not dictate our personal lives and that we should strive to live authentic lives that reflect our true selves. By doing so, we can find happiness and fulfillment, even if our lives don't follow a predetermined path.
Jenny's personal struggle to get her partner to commit to marriage and starting a family is also discussed, highlighting the impact of societal expectations on personal decisions and relationships. The feeling of unworthiness tied to external factors, such as societal norms and expectations, is explored.
Genevieve “Jenny” Dreizen is the co-founder and COO of Fresh Starts Registry, a platform designed to help people begin again after any big life transition. Trigger warning - this episode discusses suicide (w/o details). Please take care while listening.
Suzanne Anderson shares her journey of self-discovery and the traumatic event that changed the trajectory of her life. She discusses finding true love with her husband, David, and the magical life they built together. However, everything changed when David died by suicide just two days before his niece's wedding and five days before Suzanne was set to launch her new program.
“I had a friend who does the shamanic rattles if you've ever heard of these intense rattling. And she rattled, rattled. And when it hit the peak moment, I took this vessel and just smashed it on the stone hearth. And it went into just a bajillion pieces. And the whole room went, kuch! And my body did. It was like the message to my body, and I think others felt this too, that there would be no putting back together this thing.”
Suzanne opens up about the shock and trauma of losing her partner and having to quickly sell their multimillion-dollar estate to pay off David's debts. Despite the pain and loss, Suzanne shares how this experience has taught her important lessons about trust and resilience. Overall, this conversation is a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the importance of finding home and belonging in a world that can be unpredictable.

Robert Peterpaul, host of the "The Art of Kindness" podcast, shares his inspiring story of resilience and the power of kindness.
“I remember the moment that really started to shift things was waking up that morning to go to school. When my brother said, my stomach hurts, I don't feel well, I don't feel well. I immediately thought he was faking it. I thought he was just trying to get out of class because, listen, I've hid in the basement, I've hid in closets, I've hid under the tables to not go to school. That was us. And then he kept up with it. And I still was kind of like, huh. I think my parents, too, at first maybe thought that. And then... they finally relented and said, okay, we'll take you to the doctor. And he was just in so much pain. And so I went off to school, kind of probably forgot about it. I was like, maybe jealous he was staying home, to be honest. And then when I came out of school, my parents weren't there to pick me up.”
When Robert was 10 years old, his brother passed away from cancer. He emphasizes the need to be there for others and lead with kindness, understanding that everyone is going through their own struggles. His personal experience with loss and grief has taught him the power of authenticity and vulnerability and the importance of finding joy and positivity in the face of tragedy.
Robert is an award-winning actor, writer, and celebrity interviewer with a passion for storytelling and spreading kindness. Some recent highlights include CBS' BULL, Netflix's KING COBRA, SONY's WHAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT, and NEWSIES at the Westport Country Playhouse. He will next appear in the upcoming Amazon feature film SITTING IN BARS WITH CAKE.
Robert and his family formed the nonprofit THE THOMAS PETERPAUL FOUNDATION in honor of his late brother. TPF has helped pediatric cancer patients and their families since its inception. Robert notably teamed up with Novartis and spoke before Congress at the US Capitol on behalf of TPF to get the CAR T Cell Therapy approved. He also works for the nonprofit WOMEN IN ENTERTAINMENT, which assists women both working in and aspiring to work in the entertainment industry.
"The Art of Kindness with Robert Peterpaul” celebrates artists who use their platform to make the world a happier place - giving kindness tips, self-care advice, & funny stories from the brightest stars in the business.
