In this episode of the Life Shift podcast, Danny Quin shares his journey from working in sports media to finding his calling in storytelling as a marketer. Danny faced challenges balancing his dream job with his family life, eventually leading to depression and a life-changing doctor's appointment.
Danny's story is powerful and relatable, reflecting the societal pressure to achieve and succeed in both career and personal life. As a sports media intern, he was driven to pursue his passion for sports journalism, working long hours, sleeping in his car, and sacrificing time with his family. Danny's dedication paid off when he was offered a full-time position with NBC Sports. However, with a newborn baby and another child on the way, he soon realized that his dream job was taking a toll on his mental and physical health and his relationship with his family.
Danny's experience highlights the importance of knowing when to walk away from a dream not serving you and your family well. He realized that he needed to prioritize his family and mental health, leading to his decision to quit his job in sports media. Though difficult, the decision prompted Danny to find his true calling in storytelling as a marketer.
Through his experience, Danny learned the importance of seeking help and allowing others to help. Initially resistant to the idea of going to a doctor, Danny's life-changing doctor's appointment helped him understand the impact of depression and anxiety on his life. Seeking help and allowing others to help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Danny's story inspires anyone struggling to balance their dreams and family life. It reminds us to prioritize our mental and physical health, seek help, and stay open to new opportunities and possibilities.

In this episode, Alyse Maslonik shares her story of surviving domestic abuse and sexual assault during her childhood. She talks about the constant state of fight or flight that she lived in and how it affected her personal development. Alyse also discusses her upcoming book, "The Anger She Keeps: A True Story of Rage and Redemption," which explores the theme of holding onto anger as a way of healing.
"I get if no one wants to believe me, but I wouldn't feel right or if I would just not try one more time and then someone else becomes a victim. So that is why I told my mom. But it's interesting. There was so much turmoil in my life, even when I told my mom, it was not a turning point."
Alyse challenges the societal notion that anger is a negative emotion that must be suppressed, especially for women and victims of trauma. She shares her experience of how harnessing her anger helped her find healing and move forward. Her healing journey was not linear, however, and she had to overcome obstacles such as her mother's initial disbelief in her accusations of abuse, which led to a decade-long estrangement between them.
Despite these challenges, Alyse could understand her mother's perspective and extend grace to her. She also had to relearn the concept of love through her husband's actions, which were different from what she had experienced in the past.
Key Takeaways:
Alyse's journey from a difficult childhood to success in the corporate world led her to found RedefinED Advisors LLC, a strategic development partner for non-public and private schools. Through the Triumph Over Tragedy Scholarship Award, Alyse continues her lifelong mission of helping underprivileged children achieve their full potential by providing additional scholarships to students who have demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity.

On September 1, 1989, when I was just eight years old, my mother was killed in a motorcycle accident. As I have discussed on this show, this moment shaped not only my childhood but also my adulthood. It is also the reason The Life Shift Podcast exists. Through the Life Shift podcast, I have had the opportunity to heal parts of myself that I didn't even know were broken.
In honor of my mother, Joan Gilhooly, I have dedicated September as "Super September," where I will be releasing two impactful episodes per week. I hope that listeners will find different elements of each story that resonate with them, and perhaps the show will continue growing in that way.
If you have the heart space, please join me in remembering my mother on September 1st, the day she passed away 34 years ago. I am so grateful for the support of everyone who has been a part of this journey, and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
