Part 1: Elijah on the run

1 Kings 19:3-6 NIV

Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, (4) while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” (5) Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” (6) He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.

Part 2: Elijah in a cave 

1 Kings 19:9-16 NIV

There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?” (10) He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” (11) The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. (12) After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. (13) When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” (14) He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” (15) The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram. (16) Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet.

Part 1: 逃げるエリヤ

エリヤは恐怖に襲われ、逃げ出しました。ユダの町ベエル・シェバまで来ると、そこに従者を残し、(4)一人で荒野へ入って行きました。彼は一日中歩き続けてくたくたになり、えにしだの木の下に座り込むと、死を願って主に祈りました。「主よ、もうたくさんです。私のいのちを取ってください。いずれ死ぬのですから。」(5)そのまま木の下で横になって眠り込むと、御使いが来て彼にさわり、起きて食事をするように言いました。(6)見ると、石で焼いたパンと水の入ったつぼがあります。エリヤはパンを食べ、水を飲んでから、また横になりました。

Part 2: 洞窟の中のエリヤ

(8) And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! (9) Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, (10) that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, (11) and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. (16) For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. (17) After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. (18) Therefore encourage one another with these words.

They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.” (36) The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar (37) and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.” (38) There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews. (39) One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” (40) But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? (41) We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” (42) Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” (43) Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” (44) It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, (45) for the sun stopped shining.
