This Weekend in Hedonism (Segment 3)
This the the ham glaze that I grew up enjoying at holiday dinners, and Russ loves it as well
1 cup brown sugar, packed
Mix brown sugar, OJ and ground cloves together. 1 hour before ham is to be removed from oven, criss cross the skin and stick in whole cloves. Pour the liquid mix over ham, and cover with foil.
Cheryl’s Mixed Drink Corner
A very pretty spring cocktail! I was especially interested, as it uses crème de violette, which we bought just after Thanksgiving while we were on vacation… and need ways to use it.
1 oz. elderflower liqeur (such as St-Germain)
1/4 oz. crème de violette
1/4 oz. hibiscus rose syrup (such as Pink House Academy)
Edible orchid, for garnish
Combine the gin, elderflower liqueur, crème de violette, hibiscus rose syrup and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake for 20 seconds. Strain the contents of the shaker in to a martini glass. Garnish with an orchid.
Rossville Union Rye Barrel Proof
It began in 1847 with a bold, satisfying taste that would make Indiana the rye capital of the world. For nearly 200 years, Lawrenceburg’s master distillers and blenders have been perfecting the original handcrafted rye blends in one of America’s last Prohibition-era distilleries. Rossville Union is a return to the golden age of rye with an authentic taste that could only come from Whiskey City.
Mashbill: Blen of 51% Rye, 45% Corn, 4% Malted barley and 95% Rye, 5% Malted barley whiskies
Region: Lawrenceburg, Indiana
Nose: Rye spice, salted lemon, cherry, plantain, almond, chocolate covered strawberry
Taste: Rye grain, anise, salted lemon, strawberry jam, light tropical fruit
Finish: Rye spice, faint citrus, vanilla, leather, touch of anise and caramel
Rating: 95 (97 in an Old Fashioned)
Glendalough Double Barrel Irish Whiskey
Upon its release, this whiskey won double gold at The World Spirits Competition in San Francisco. It really is an Irish whiskey that will make you think twice about Irish whiskey. A lovely, light and drinkable whiskey, it’s also complex with a depth of flavour beyond its years. Aged twice in barrels from far sides of the world, the flavours are a game of two halves. American oak Bourbon barrels bring sweet honey and smooth vanilla notes, laying down the foundations of the flavours. The Spanish oak Oloroso barrels layer on dried fruit, and nutty flavours. To find the best Oloroso casks, we go off the beaten track to the small Andalusian town of Montilla, home of the famous PX grape. Here we can talk one on one with producers, chose the bodega, the liquid, the time seasoning, and eventually the casks. This gives us more influence on the flavours in our Double Barrel whiskey.
Mashbill: Single Grain - Barley
Distiller’s Nose: Rich with dark fruit, cherry, raisin, fig and Christmas pudding. Floral notes with lemongrass, citrus and a touch of nutmeg
Distiller’s Taste: Sweet and smooth, with butterscotch, honey and peppercorn, dried fruit, maraschino cherries and brown sugar.
Distiller’s Finish: Ginger spices a touch of almond and earthiness.
Rating: Very Good (5 of 5)
