    Your insecurities and Fears revealed
If you could sum up The End of the Road in three words, what would they be?
    unnerving, scary, and thought provoking
What other book might you compare The End of the Road to and why?
This book kind of made me think of Texas Chainsaw movies as the people in the trailer park town were these strange messed up rednecks.
What about Christian Rummels performance did you like?
He did a very good job with the Story. and I really liked his Southern Cal girl voice
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When they were in the mansion and they saw themselves in distorted mirrors revealing their true fears and selves.
    Any additional comments?
I has listened to Craig DiLouie's other book Suffer the Children which was such a good book. It made me want to buy this short story. If you have not listened to Suffer the Children it is a must have. It is narrated by R.C. Bray who is my favorite narrator.
A version of the hills have eyes
This was a truly disturbing tale of lost travelers thinking that they found salvation in a small back woods town. Sure it was short and sounds like little more than a pitch for a B grade slasher movie the likes of The Hills Have Eyes. Nothing wrong with that in my opinion, not all stories can be masterpieces. Masterpiece or not stories like this can reach down in your soul and turn part of it black. A group of friends break down in the middle of a road trip and in the middle of nowhere, only to find a small town. The residents seems a little off their rocker at first, only to discover later that they are much worse that the travelers first thought. This was a pretty straight forward horror story with not twists or turns, yet I found it a very quick escape from reality.

The swamp belongs to them. Humans are only prey.
Deep in the overgrown swamps of Florida, where humans rarely dare to enter, lives a race of creatures long thought to be only the stuff of legend. They walk upright but are stronger, taller and more brutal than any man. And when a small boat of tourists, held captive by a fleeing criminal, accidentally kills one of the swamp dwellers young, the creatures are filled with a terrifyingly human emotion - a merciless lust for vengeance that will paint the trees red with blood.

    MISTER IS FOR OLD MEN
    SURRENDER PARTIES
Having read a short story by Shea called Autopsy, I was wanted to see if all his writing was as good. This was good in a different way. While Autopsy was scary, this was gory and funny. I don't know if it is Redneck, Mobster or Florida humor, I just know it is funny. This has MORE humor than THE FRENCH HAVE SURRENDER PARTIES. It is faced paced with some cool characters. Beware that it goes from funny to gory. Also beware that the language is very adult.
    Narrator was good
Better Than The Title Implies...Give it A Listen
Where does Swamp Monster Massacre rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I was afraid this might be a really poorly written blood and guts splatter-fest. It was actually pretty entertaining. By no means is this a literary jewel but it entertained and held my interest. There were parts that made me laugh out loud. And the main character is memorable. I wish it was longer.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Michael Ray Davis?
Michael Ray Davis is not a bad narrator. His voice definitely gave depth to the main character. However, there are several instances where he runs over punctuation and paragraph stops. It made it unnecessarily difficult to follow who was thinking/saying what.
Perfect match of awesome story and narration.
Michael has the perfect voice for the main character Rooster. Plenty of action, bodies, and monsters to keep this story going full speed the entire book. Easily one of those 'needs a sequel' books. Would easily rate this on the same ground as Peter Clines 14.
    Incredible
This short story is incredible, I've listened to couple of short stories that lacked substance, this is like a mini movie with everything in it. you won't regret.
    An Exciting Fast-Paced Thriller!
Would you consider the audio edition of Swamp Monster Massacre to be better than the print version?
I've not read the print version, so this is a difficult question to answer. I will say that I thoroughly enjoyed the audible.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Swamp Monster Massacre?
There were so many! The ending was epic and I think this book needs a sequel. The segment when Rooster goes after the final three monsters was one I won't soon forget.
Which character as performed by Michael Ray Davis was your favorite?
Rooster. He was a complex character - a common criminal with a heart and a past that I'd like to read more about to fully understand the man he became.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The author alternated the terror with humor that had me laughing out loud rendering needed welcome sporadic relief from the gripping tension and gore.
    Any additional comments?
The author has a very engaging writing style that took me a little bit to become accustomed to, but which I grew to enjoy.

  • People Person Audiobook by Trent Zelazny

    Title: People Person
    Author: Trent Zelazny
    Narrator: John Reilly
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 9 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-06-13
    Publisher: Trent Zelazny

    Genres: Fiction, Horror
    Publisher's Summary:
Jeff Carlisle is obsessed over the mysterious disappearance of his sister. Having recently moved into a new home, he acquaints himself with his new neighbors, and discovers quickly that all is not right next door.
But what can be done? After all, they're just people. And people are just a part of life, right?
    Members Reviews:
    More please.
A brief look into what seems like the mundane, lonely life of a guy who could be anyone. The pace is slow, but in a good way, and you gently drift along with the protagonist, feeling a little sorry for him, and maybe for yourself, if your life is sad like that too, and you think the scenario laid before you is a pretty bleak reflection of people and life, but it's so real. You're probably pretty sure the protagonist will eat a bullet, or strangle the single person he's decided to reach out to in a "If I can't have you, no one will" kind of scenario. As you near the end, though, Zelazny sucker punches you, and just when you think "Oh yeah, s__t's about to get real," the story ends. This sounds negative, but it's not. The narrative is beautifully written, the characterization is amazing, and the need for more means s__t got real before Zelazny punched you. I'll definitely read more by this author.
To Kill or Not to Kill
In all of Trent Zelazny's novels there is craft and the eye of clarity. In this one there is a pace and heart beat, a clock that keeps ticking. You know something terrible is going to happen, you feel it -- and by that I mean the author makes you feel it -- and you wish it to be over and you don't want it to end. People Person is a paen to vengeance and a song of mortality. The author uses his toolbox of considerable skills to entrap you, hold you, and tighten your innards. Like all the best adventure, suspense and noir artistes, Zelazny goes for the gut, grabs you and doesn't let you go until the end ... and even then it's not over because you keep thinking, "what if, what if." He's among the best in his field and it's a stellar field of diamond-bright novelists -- so if you like irony, edge of your seat suspense, and also a gratified sense of justice for all evil doers, this is your book, as it was and is mine.
    Another Winner From Zelazny
As many others have said, what Zelazny does incredibly well is the art of humanizing his characters. It's easy to identify with his characters and they're usually placed in realistic situations. Their reactions and actions are definitely interesting, whether it's what we ourselves would do or not in such a situation, but that's the thrill of his story-telling.
When you read Zelazny's works (short stories, novels, plays, all of it) you'll be taken on a journey that will give you something to ponder when you're done.
If you're looking for a short, satisfying read that will pack a bit of a punch, then you should definitely check out this short from Trent Zelazny.
but this one is definitely his best to date
I read this novelette in one sitting. There isn't one Zelazny story I've read that hasn't impressed me, but this one is definitely his best to date. If my suspicions are correct, there's a lot going on between the lines, much more depth to the main character than it first seems. I also suspect that this story is going to haunt me for some time.

This is a story from the "Great Ghost Stories" collection.
A spine-tingling collection of classic ghost stories - a perfect way to pass those long winter nights! This set contains "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe, "The Horla" by Guy de Maupassant, "Sredni Vashtar" by Saki, "The Mark of the Beast" by Rudyard Kipling, "Lost Hearts" by M.R. James and "The Furnished Room" by O. Henry.
    Editorial Reviews:
Narrator Dermot Kerrigan's masterful performance will have listeners drawn into Edgar Allan Poe's gothic tale from the start. Kerrigan so fully immerses himself in the voice of the narrator that it is almost difficult to believe that he isn't the protagonist himself, whose conviction in his own sanity and rationality provides a greater horror than the murder he commits. After his heinous crime, the narrator is haunted by the sound of his victim's heartbeat, and his madness intensifies until it erupts into violent passions and emotions. Kerrigan's accomplished depiction of this final descent avoids excessive melodrama and will leave listeners stunned.

In Rats by M .R. James, Mr. Thompson comes to regret his decision to investigate a locked room in a country inn.
    Editorial Reviews:
Anthony Donovans subtle, atmospheric performance amplifies the bone-chilling tension that permeates throughout accomplished early 20th-century British writer M. R. James lean, minimalist yarn, which tells the story of an unassuming young man who checks into an inn looking for peace and quiet, but instead becomes enraptured with the strange, enigmatic presence he discovers behind a locked door.
Fans of tight, intelligently written horror that eschews violence and gore and embraces the power of the imagination will be drawn to this gripping audiobook.

    YULETIDE YARNS
This is a 2-cd set with two stories per disc. The second disc has a couple of frighteners from E F Benson; the first contains a particularly interesting M R James effort but leads off with the famous (or anyway once famous) Dickens short story The Signalman. In listening to the four tales I took them in the order they are given, and that is what I would recommend anyone else to do.
The Yuletide is coming on again. It has to share its dates with the Christmas season, but it is a pagan observance, and its special atmosphere of godless threats and unsanctified suspense has thankfully not been lost, because it is a lot of fun over Christmas in the northern hemisphere. These stories also revive the tradition of being read to. I used to read M R James to my own children, but here we are taken back a century and more to the era before electronic media or even radio, and it all evokes the atmosphere of dimmed lights, a crackling log fire and listeners enjoying the unthreatening thrill of preternatural threats to men and women long ago, all with the television switched off and beakers of steaming mulled wine or hot toddy to keep us warm against the December chill now banished outside the double glazing.
It all calls for quality - quality in the story-writing and quality in the reading. The reader is Andrew Sachs, who apparently was Manuel in Fawlty Towers. His voice is urbane and beautiful, and he does not overdo effects or impressions, although he does particularly well with the persona of Julia Stone in The Room in the Tower. If you ask me (or even if you don't) stories such as these are far more effective than, say, Steven King. I am almost tempted to say that the less outright horror they purvey the greater the atmosphere and suspense there is. Benson is a good writer, James is a very good writer indeed, but the king of them all (no pun intended) is Dickens himself. For sheer suspense this narrative would be hard to beat, especially nowadays when a visit to a lonely signalbox at 11 p.m. would spoil the effect because it could not itself be taken as innocent or harmless.
The James piece is particularly interesting in one way. I was reflecting that the story reminded me of his famous The Mezzotint when James himself sent us a message via his narrator that we might be reminded of The Mezzotint but that he hoped we would find enough in The Haunted Doll's House to excuse that. It's fine by me, but I can't recall hearing or reading this story before, and it is my experience that among `complete;' editions of James some are more complete than others. Apart from that, it only remains to compliment the choice of music, which is particularly atmospheric.

    Publisher's Summary:
It is the beginning of December and it is cold and grey outside. In the stately flickering hearths of the grand mansion of Nideck Point, oak fires are burning. The Morphenkinder are busy getting ready for the ancient pagan feast of midwinter. Everyone is invited, including some of their own who do not wish them well...
Reuben Golding, the newest of the Morphenkinder, is struggling with his new existence as a Man Wolf, struggling to learn to control his desires and bloodthirsty urges. His pure, luminous girlfriend Laura seems all set to join him in this new way of life, but Reuben is not at all certain he will love her if she becomes as he is.
Beyond the mansion, the forest echoes with howling winds, which carry with them tales of a strange nether world, and of spirits centuries old who possess their own fantastical ancient histories and taunt with their dark, magical powers. As preparations for the feast gather pace, destiny continues to hound Reuben, not least in the form of a strange, tormented ghost who appears at the window, unable to speak. But he is not alone: before the festivities are over, choices must be made choices which will decide the fate of the Morphenkinder for ever.

I was expecting more from Anne Rice
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Anne Rice is not na author for everyone, and she has better books than this one. It wouldn't be a book that I would recommend to everyone.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I feel like the story in itself was small for such a big book. Comparing with the first, this story doesn't flow so naturally or is so interesting.
What about Ron McLartys performance did you like?
I like his clean voice, that's easily understandle.
Was The Wolves of Midwinter worth the listening time?
I've been a fan of Anne Rice for a long time, so she's always worth listening too. She can't however always please all.
    Disappointing Sequel
I'm not sure if it's because "The Wolf Gift" was so good that this sequel was so disappointing, or whether it just wasn't up to much itself.
Either way, not much happens until the last third of the book, where Reuben's brother comes into his own.
    Breathtaking
This book is the first audio book that I go back too over and over again.
Ron McLarty has a liquid velvet voice, he truly brings all the characters to life, they become embedded and beloved, this is truly one of my all time favourite audio books, Ann Rice is a gifted author who's descriptions and attention to detail sets a scene that you become fully submerged in. Nideck point is a place I want to live.
    Not what I expected.
What disappointed you about The Wolves of Midwinter?
The names of the characters. The plot. Had to abandon just too hard a read for me.
What was most disappointing about Anne Rices story?
For the first time, her work felt old and tired
What about Ron McLartys performance did you like?
    he was an excellent reader.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    disappointment.

    Publisher's Summary:
Night falls. It came like a malignant shadow with seductive promises of power. And somewhere in the night...a small girl smiled as her mother burned...asylum inmates slaughtered their attendants...in slimy tunnels once-human creatures gathered. Madness raged as the lights began to fade and humanity was attacked by an ancient, unstoppable evil.
James Herbert was one of Britain's greatest popular novelists and our #1 best-selling writer of chiller fiction. Widely imitated and hugely influential, he wrote 23 novels which have collectively sold over 54 million copies worldwide and been translated into 34 languages. Born in London in the forties, James Herbert was art director of an advertising agency before turning to writing fiction in 1975. His first novel, The Rats, was an instant best-seller and is now recognised as a classic of popular contemporary fiction.
Herbert went on to publish a new top ten best-seller every year until 1988. He wrote six more best-selling novels in the 1990s and three more since: Once, Nobody True and The Secret of Crickley Hall. Herbert died in March 2013 at the age of 69.
    Editorial Reviews:
Take the haunting suspense of James Herbert's text, add the chilling timbre of actor, Sean Barrett's voice, and you get an audiobook that must be listened to in one sitting. Long one of Britain's most popular horror writers, James Herbert is at his peak here with The Dark. Similar to his much-celebrated The Fog, the characters in this audiobook are driven to madness and terrifying violence as an amorphous and invisible antagonist descends upon the town. With a sinister performance, Sean Barrett will have listeners frozen over the pause button as the characters try to outlast one of our most primal fears: the dark.
    Critic Reviews:
"Herbert was by no means literary, but his work had a raw urgency. His best novels, The Rats and The Fog,
"There are few things I would like to do less than lie under a cloudy night sky while someone read aloud the more vivid passages of Moon. In the thriller genre, do recommendations come any higher?" (Andrew Postman, The New York Times Book Review)
"Herbert goes out in a blaze of glory" (Daily Mail)

    GREAT SUPERNATURAL MYSTERY!
FIRST HERBERT BOOK I HAVE LISTENED TO.....WILL NOT BE THE LAST! ALTHOUGH I WOULD CLASSIFY THIS BOOK AS WEIRD, THE BOOK IS RATHER TWISTED AND MACABRE. THE STORY WAS GOOD BUT WHAT WAS AWESOME WAS THE PSYCHOLOGICAL INSIGHT AND PARAPSYCHOLOGY THEORIES THAT PLAYED OUT IN THE STORY. WILL NOT GIVE AWAY TOO MUCH IN THE BOOK BUT IF I HAD TO COMPARE HERBERT'S WORK WITH ANOTHER AUTHOR IT WOULD BE STEPHEN KING. THE CHARACTER DEPTH, DIALOGUE, AND REACTIONS TO SITUATIONS WERE VERY BELIEVABLE AND SPOT ON.
THIS IS A HORROR BOOK AND NOT FOR THE WEAK OF HEART OR MODEST INDIVIDUAL. WOULD BE A GREAT BOOK THIS HALLOWEEN SEASON!
    Bad Narrator

    WOW!!!!!!!!!!
Adersen Prunty's "Hi, I'm A Social Disease" is a collection of 7 great short stories.
"Room 19": The story of a man who, in the end gets what he deserves for the horrible things that he has done.
"Market Adjustment": This one takes place during an economic crash. One man sets out to try to set things right.
"The Dust Season": A traveling circus freak show. When Bradley sleeps with Eliza, there is hell to pay.
"The Man With The Face Like A Bruise": Another story in which cheating leads to dire consequences.
"The Photographer": A war veteran who committed the heinous gets his in the end.
"The Funeralgoer": A man who attends funerals and can "relive" how people died finds himself being used to help those recently brought back from the dead.
"The Night The Moon Made A Sound": A ghost story.
This is the first book that I have read despite having purchased just about all of Mr. Prunty's books. I buy faster than I can read and was looking forward to getting into something by him and decided to start with this and I am glad that I did.
This collection is jam packed with awesome stories. I really haven't given anything away in the descriptions that I posted above and I cannot recommend this collection enough.
Of the stories listed it was really hard to pick a favorite. They are all truly great reads.
But "The Night The Moon Made A Sound" deserves an award of some kind. It is one on the best ghost stories that I have ever read and well worth the cost of admission. I say again, I cannot recommend this collection enough. Pick this one up today! Looking forward to reading more by Mr. Prunty!!
Rainbows, Unicorns, & Dancing Bears - yeah, right
If you've ever read Prunty's work before, you would certainly recognize repeated themes such as the end of the world, despair, cannibalism, death, life after death, crazy, mind reading, tentacles, violence, loneliness, and more.
This collection is a little more uneven than some of his other collections. Room 19 is the standout of this collection and, while many have written about the end of the world and the breakdown of society, few have ever managed to capture the kind of bitter hopelessness that is set forth in Room 19.
Market Correction unfortunately wanders around in two many directions and lacks the singleminded focus of the other stories which take us readers on a dry brittle journey of pain and loneliness and despair. Vengeance has never been wrought so well.
If you want to read about dancing purple dinosaurs, you just might be in the wrong place.
    I love horror bizarro
These stories are twisted in the best way possible.

Good stories and wonderfully cozy narration!
I came to know this book by looking up what other book Richard Henzel has narrated, since I liked his voice and how he tells stories when I read a couple of RV living books. The stories in this book are mildly suspenseful but not too scary, which I liked. I am not Rusty Wilson's 'big foot' story followers, but really enjoyed all of the mysterious stories this book contained. Richard Henzel's narration was awesome as always, cozy and warm, perfect for entertainment on the road or just relax by the fire or candle light at home on a wintery, chilly night. The book will fill you with a little wonder and takes you away from your every day life.
Wild, Weird and Touching Tales from the Master
This book is a collection of great unusual campfire stories from master storyteller Rusty Wilson. Unlike many of his other campfire books, this does not focus exclusively on Bigfoot, although there is a Bigfoot story among the collection. The stories told are unusual, touching, poignant and humorous. They stay with you. I particularly love the Canadian Mounty and Bone Games stories. One is very touching and the other is wild, weird and fun. I will leave it to the reader to discover the gems for yourself. All are the usual high caliber gems Rusty is known for. His books really come alive and are brought to life by the deft vocal talents of Richard Henzel. Mr. Henzel narrates most of his other books and has an innate gift for storytelling. It's as interesting to listen to this book as to read it. If you enjoy this great collection of tales, check out Rusty's Bigfoot Campfire series of books. The stories are just as great and highly addicting. Check out his blog for more great fun as well.
    Suspensful
Have you listened to any of Richard Henzels other performances before? How does this one compare?
I thought Richard was Rusty. I Love listening to all of Richards stories.
