    Title: Ladies' Night
    Author: Jack Ketchum
    Narrator: Anthony Mendez
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 10 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-09-11
    Publisher: Crossroad Press
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 47 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Horror
    Publisher's Summary:
Ladies' Night is a non-stop rollercoaster ride of sheer nerve rattling terror, previously deemed too violent for mass-market publication. In this modern tale of the ages-old battle of the sexes carried to the extreme, Jack Ketchum again provides listeners with an excursion into horror as relentless as a John Woo film.
Tom Braun and his wife, Susan, aren't exactly a picturesque couple. Thus it comes as no surprise that Tom continually spends late evenings in bars and cheats on his wife. Unfortunately, their son, Andy, is caught in the middle of his parent's childish banter and family chaos. One life-altering evening turns this family's, along with most of New York's, perceptions on the nuclear family and male/female relationships upside down.
When a tanker trunk with "Ladies Inc." emblazoned on the side crashes in a quiet area in New York, an area it doesn't have authorization to be in, it liberally spills its contents all over the road and into the surrounding atmosphere. The local authorities deem the contents of the spill to be safe, based merely on the assumption that products coming from a women's label are more than likely benign. Moreover, the smell emanating from the spill is one of sweet cherry, similar to lollipops, which must of course be harmless if not favorable. This aforementioned assumption proves fatally incorrect. The chemical load the truck was hauling procures a discomfiting, bestial effect in women, forcing them to savagely attack males in their vicinity - be they former friend or foe.
Tom, while at a local bar, absorbs the evening's strange turn of events with traumatizing clarity as he witnesses first hand the metamorphosis of surrounding women into gruesomely instinctual brutes and mantis-like predators. He must get home to his son Andy, who is currently alone with his wife, Susan - before it is too late. (A multicast production.)

HER THINKING WAS UNSTRUCTURED AND WITHOUT LOGIC
    Introduction
I really enjoyed the introduction, in which Jack Ketchum explains what he went through to get this book published. I admire a man who sticks to his guns, but perhaps he might have taken some advice. I am a Jack Ketchum Fan, but this was hard to listen to. Not because of the gore, but due to the lack of plot or character development. The concept of the book was great, but what it turned into was one gory scene after another for almost three hours. I actually found my mind wondering and had to concentrate to know what was going on. With no plot and no characters to care about I was bored as people were being stabbed, shot, heads cut off, blood here, blood there, etc...
    The female, zombie apocalypse
Reads like a bad teenage male fantasy on acid; the female, zombie apocalypse! The narrative is urgent and intense but can be messy as the story transitions in "quick cuts". From memory in the prologue the author says that he was trying to write a movie script at the time and 'Ladies' Night' reads that way. It would make a great B-grade horror movie. The narrator's gravelly voice seems a bit abrasive to begin with but once the action kicks off it suits the story down to a t.

Perfect blend of paranormal and reality.
This story was a great listen, keeping me interested and eager for the next chapter. The story dives into the paranormal but in a very believable way leaving me to think about the possibilities. Not a completely predictable story which makes me ready to read his next book. Narrator has a really good handle on the characters and his voice changes fit perfectly. Enjoyed the entire book. May actually listen to it again sometime.
Great listen, great story, great author!
Great listen. I found Joseph Nassise for his book, EYES TO SEE, a few months ago and loved the storytelling, the pacing and the way the story unfolded. I immediately started looking for more of his work and found RIVERWATCH here on Audible. A really great listen, scary story, a lot of "how the hell are they going to get out of this." moments.
    It was OK
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
It helped pass the time, but it wasn't anything special.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
It was too easy to guess.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Nothing special one way or the other.
Did Riverwatch inspire you to do anything?
Look more carefully at story lines.
    Any additional comments?
It was a pretty predictable story, and the characters didn't have any suprises.

    Matheson Western Horror Novel
If you're a Richard Matheson fan, this book is well worth your time. It's an excellent blend of two of his favorite genres.
The reader does a terrific job presenting the book.
Old West with a Mystical Twist
What did you love best about Shadow on the Sun?
Great storytelling with foreshadowing that created great suspense.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The scenes that foreshadowed the ending - the Corcoran brothers observing the treaty talks and what happened to Little Owl.
Who was the most memorable character of Shadow on the Sun and why?
Billjohn Finley. He was formally educated yet had an understanding and appreciation for the native American culture and ways. He respected - and ultimately rightfully so - the Native American views on mysticism.
    This Horror/Western is classic Matheson
A pretty straightforward horror/western: the gruesome murders of two white men threaten a treaty between a band of warlike Apaches and the U.S. before the ink has even dried, but when Indian agent Billjohn Finley investigates, he discovers that the murderer may be supernatural.
Matheson's writing is pure story: he doesn't set up more than he needs to, and his characters get only as much detail as they need. This would make a good movie, though unlike many of Matheson's other stories, it hasn't been turned into a film, probably because Westerns are so out of fashion.
3.5 stars. This is a decent yarn, though even the ending is scripted like a Hollywood movie. Definitely worth reading or listening to for a few hours of entertainment, though it's not likely to rank as one of your all-time favorites.
The performance by Mark Bramhall is good, if perhaps a bit overacted at times, but it fits the melodramatic plotting.
    Not What I Was Expecting
I'm a fan of a lot of Richard Matheson's stories...this is not one of them. Overall I thought it was okay. The narrator did a good job, and his voice suited the story. It was a different sort of story compared to Matheson's other works. This one is set in the Wild West and our hero of the story is a government official, who must figure out who is killing people in the town. It is a supernatural story, so if that isn't your thing then don't get this book!
    weak plot
The story is melodramatic, the characters are superficial and predictable. Weak storyline with many unbelievable and pointless elements.

    Family listening?
We wanted to have a few scary stories for a family road trip. We love Vincet Price. But with the foul language in these fun scary stories, we were left wondering how the story ended.
    Fun-fun-fun
This audio book is a trip down memory lane. The sounds make one tingle. Professionally done. The script, the music, the voices, and the sound effects fit together perfectly. Hope there will be a Vol 2! This program definitely is something we will listen to over and over again. Great listening.
Not quite worthy of the name
For those who failed to read this audiobook's description, be warned all ye who enter here. Vincent Price is nowhere to be found. Instead Bluewater has apparently licensed Vincent Price's name alone to paste over the top of four stories of varying quality of plot and performance. Things start off pretty well with the Tinglers which sounds like a modern reproduction of a vintage radio program and thankfully no one does a horrible Vincent Price accent. Things slowly go downhill from there Fade Away is not bad, Canus is truly laughable and Road Rage is confusing and poorly performed. There's also an interview with Victoria Price, which while interesting does sound slightly canned and rehearsed. Not many interesting details there unless you don't know much about the titular star of this program, who again makes no appearance in any form anywhere. Instead you get one guy who only has one stage English accent and a 13 year old who plays most of the adult parts. Price could pull off even the highest camp because he was a top caliber actor. Sadly, the voice talent here is not and much of the intended humour falls a little flat. Luckily this is a cheap book, so if you but it for The Tinglers you aren't out much money, but there are much better programs out there and Audible also has some of Price's actual work including The Saint and Three Skeleton Key.
    Enjoyable
I enjoyed this different way to present these stories. It added an enjoyable way to remember them. I especially enjoyed the interview with Vincent Price's daughter.

    Narrator
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The Narrator can hardly speak. Its almost like he whispers.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Felbrigg Napoleon Herriot?
    Wayne June
    Any additional comments?
    The narrator ruined the experience.
    Droll narration.
This narrator has an exotic name and a voice akin to the crunch of dry toast. I was looking forward to listening to this book...I love Lovecraft, however there is more inflection presented within the 10 o'clock news broadcast.
I gave only one star as I couldn't make it even a quarter of the way through due to the narration.
I'm sure it's a wonderful book. I'll have to read it someday.
    Great Story Hobbled by Narration
Where does The Case of Charles Dexter Ward rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Frankly, this is not so good as most other Lovecraft offerings.
What other book might you compare The Case of Charles Dexter Ward to and why?
It is fair to compare this with the other works of Lovecraft. As a story, and in the overall context of Lovecraft, this is worthy of attention.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I found the narration throughout more distracting than compelling. Initially, I was surprised to hear a British reader taking on a quintessentially American story. After that, however, I was more surprised at the number of mispronounced words and awkward phrasing. By about the halfway point, I found myself listening for more errors. Definitely not the listening experience I was hoping for.
    Any additional comments?
Get the ones read by Wayne June. Terrific narrator.
    My favorite story by HPL
Fantastic reading of a great novella. The New England accent really brought the reading of this story up a notch.
    Lovecraft's Best Work
Would you consider the audio edition of The Case of Charles Dexter Ward to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version
Who was your favorite character and why?
It's not a character driven novella. It is an account of events
What three words best describe Felbrigg Napoleon Herriots performance?
    misspeaking refined snooty
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes
    Any additional comments?
This is an amazingly well crafted tale of horror out of time. The typical Lovecraftian use of language accentuates the awful powers unleashed on the world. Despite being only five hours long, you will replay it to tie together all the loose ends you don't realize you didn't connect. Just an amazing story.FNH is a bit of a pratt. He slips in the odd wrong word, or wrong pronunciation (editing anyone).

    Language: English
    Release date: 05-18-11
    Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 18 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Horror
    Publisher's Summary:
The name on the covers was Bachman. But the imagination could only belong to one man: Stephen King.
'Thinner' - the old gypsy man barely whispers the word. Billy feels the touch of a withered hand on his cheek.
Billy Halleck, prosperous if overweight citizen, happily married, shuddered then turned angrily away. The old woman's death had been none of his fault. The courts had cleared him. She'd just stumbled in front of his car. Now he simply wanted to forget the whole messy business.
Later, when the scales told him he was losing weight, it was what the doctor ordered. His wife was pleased - as she should have been. But....
'Thinner' - the word, the old man's curse, has lodged in Billy's mind like a fattening worm, eating at his flesh, at his reason. And with his despair, comes violence.

    nails on chalkboard
When I bought the book I already knew that the story and the reader where decent. The soundeffects screeching loudly all the time where the thing that really ultimately spoiled this audiobook.
    "Thinner...Thinner..."
The word spoken by this story's villain lodges in the mind and stays there. Even now it brings an image to mind of a grotesque relic of a man who long ago lost the majority of his humanity.
King (sorry, Bachman) weaves a distressing tale that sees our protagonist Billy cursed by a gypsy after he accidentally runs the old man's daughter over, killing her. The result of said curse is the steady, inexorable loss of Billy's weight.
It's a simple premise. The first half of the book deals with the weight loss and it's consequences, while the second charts Billy's mission to find and confront the old man. The narrator does a decent job. I find it amusing that whoever decided to hire him just wanted to hear him do Ginelli's voice. Why? Because it sounds exactly like Fat Tony from the Simpsons. Same guy. However I also just found out that the narrator starred as Ginelli in the film version of this book. But I digress.
The book is a decent read from King. An interesting and disturbing one. The ending is quite tragic and as the reader gets closer to it, they realize the story can only end one way. Spine-tingling.
    Thoroughly satisfying yarn
This is a great listen. Excellent, threatening narration from Joe Mantegna and the unusual addition of unsettling music. Revenge is such a powerful and compelling theme in literature and interest in this novel is really driven by waiting for the results of the clash between the two main protagonists.
I enjoyed this novel much more than I anticipated and it is much better than 11.22.63 which has much better reviews.
    Thinner or not
Where does Thinner rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This book has to be in my top 5. Its my first Stephen King book .
What was one of the most memorable moments of Thinner?
The end it is so dramatic you just dont think it will end this way.
Which character as performed by Joe Mantegna was your favourite?
The main character .... you felt you were inside of him along his journey, which isnt an easy one.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
    Be careful how you drive
    Any additional comments?
This book is haunting. it is so well narrated by Joe Mantegna.... his voice puts the story across so well. You think about the word thinner even when you have finished the book.

    Great horror book, scary, wow
I really enjoyed this book. I love zombie, horror and ghost stories. This was unique and different. A breath of fresh air. It wasn't your typical "haunted house". I wish there was second book. The characters were well developed, interesting and no idiot "surprises". (except of course if strange things were happening in MY house I'd be setting up some cameras!) I'm glad there wasn't an overabundance of characters as is the case in many horror books. I like the focus on several main characters. The story was interesting and a new "take" on the ghoul/goblin/haunted house. I hate books that go overboard in chapter 1 trying to "keep your attention" by too much detail. This was perfect. Just enough to keep you interested without boring you or making it complicated. Narrator did a good job. Definitely give it a shot. You won't be disappointed.
    Darker Than Night
Mr. Goingback, You are a terrific writer. This story real or fake, was amazing. You have a very distint imagination. This book keeped my heart beating fast throughout the story.
poorly performed and in need of editing
I liked Crota quite a bit, but this story is just poorly written. The narrator's bizarre delivery seriously hurts the experience.
    Good Start Ending Seemed Rushed
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Disappointed. The ending seemed rushed and was too typical like a made for TV horror movie.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
His voice was a bit mechanical.
    Any additional comments?
It starts off very interesting, but when the opportunity for true horror arrives the story rushes passed the moment. Until the rushed ending I did enjoy it.
    Entertaining...
If you can get past the narrator sounding like a robot (and doing a terrible female voice) and the monsters being named Boogers, it's a fairly entertaining story. A very easy listen; a simple story about a big city family moving into a haunted house in a rural area. The tone and writing reminded me of Joe Hill's Heart Shaped Box, but not quite at that level. Nothing really that hasn't been done before, but a well-written story. This book would definitely be appropriate for YA and doesn't have anything racy or controversial. I'd avoid the narrator, although he's not terrible enough to stop listening, and may download another Goingback book if I feel like a non-thought-provoking, entertaining listen on the long commute.

Dark Shadows with a different name
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This is one of THE best books I have ever read. Apparently it was intended as Dark Shadows fiction, and believe me, even with different names, it is. If you love Willie Loomis as much as I do, READ THIS BOOK. If you love his seafaring companion Jason McGuire, READ THIS BOOK. A wonderfully-told, beautifully performed story that stands alone but, when considered as part of the Dark Shadows canon, fills in some gaps in what is an astonishing life. This book resonated with me for months after I finished it - so much so that I had to read it again.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Hawkes Harbor?
Without spoiling it for others, the scene on the road after Christmas tore my heart out.
What about Dick Hills performance did you like?
He is so able to convey emotion with his voice and can 'read' different parts in character. Beautifully done.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I sobbed my heart out at the end - for Grenville (Barnabas) and for Jamie (Willie.)
    Any additional comments?
I wish there were more books like this - perhaps Hinton could be persuaded to write another, from a different character's point of view?
    Sailor be-ware!!!!!
I haven't finished reading yet but I am so confused half-way through this book. Is it horror or a sailor's tale of the high -seas...Maybe there is a suprise ending.
