    Title: Poe's Children
Subtitle: The New Horror: An Anthology (Unabridged Selections)
    Author: Peter Straub
    Narrator: Various
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 15 hrs and 25 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-14-08
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 29 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Horror
    Publisher's Summary:
Horror writing is usually associated with formulaic gore, but New Wave horror writers have more in common with the wildly inventive, evocative spookiness of Edgar Allan Poe than with the sometimes predictable hallmarks of their peers. Showcasing this cutting-edge talent, Poe's Children now brings the best of the genre's stories to a wider audience. Featuring tales from such writers as Neil Gaiman and Jonathan Carroll, Poe's Children is Peter Straub's tribute to the imaginative power of storytelling. Each previously published story has been selected by Straub to represent what he thinks is the most interesting development in our literature during the last two decades.
Selections range from the early Stephen King psychological thriller "The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet," in which an editor confronts an author's belief that his typewriter is inhabited by supernatural creatures, to "The Man on the Ceiling," Melanie and Steve Rasnic Tem's award-winning surreal tale of night terrors, woven with daylight fears that haunt a family. Other selections include National Book Award finalist Dan Chaon's "The Bees"; Peter Straub's "Little Red's Tango," the legend of a music aficionado whose past is as mysterious as the ghostly visitors to his Manhattan apartment; Elizabeth Hand's visionary and shocking "Cleopatra Brimstone"; Thomas Ligotti's brilliant, mind-stretching "Notes on the Writing of Horror: A Story"; and "Body," Brian Evenson's disturbing twist on correctional facilities.
Crossing boundaries and packed with imaginative chills, Poe's Children bears all the telltale signs of fearless, addictive fiction.

What would have made Poe's Children better?
Stories that made sense and were actually scary instead of just tedious and weird
Has Poe's Children turned you off from other books in this genre?
    NO
Would you be willing to try another one of Variouss performances?
    YES
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Poe's Children?
Every story after the 1st. I felt like it was bait and switch
    Any additional comments?
I will be returning this book. I tried several times to get into it. Skipped ahead and listened to several stories over a period a several weeks. I'm sorry to it was more of the same boring, weird stories that made absolutely no sense. If I could choose a (-) star to rate this I would
    Couldn't Get Through It
Of all the stories I heard, the first one was the best. I didn't think it was great but it was decent and mildly unsettling. I listened to two more afterwards and both seemed endless and went nowhere. It was one of the rare times I desperately wished to be able to flip ahead and see how many more pages there were left to go. They weren't horror stories so much as bizarrely conceived expositions on the horror that is a part of us all and can take many forms and blah blah blah.. I hated it, but I also didn't finish it. Maybe some works of genius were hiding towards the end.
    terrible
with boring, muddled stories full of vague abstract ideas that spark neither the readers interests nor imagination, this book was a complete wast of time.

    Publisher: Hodder Headline Limited

    Publisher's Summary:
Suspenseful, frightening, and sometimes howlingly funny, a story of invasion and battle, survival and heroism. It is a story of how men remember ... and how they love.
In Derry, Maine, four young boys once stood together and did a brave thing. Something that changed them in ways they hardly understand.
A quarter of a century later, the boys are men who have gone their separate ways. Though they still get together once a year, to go hunting in the north woods of Maine. But this time is different. This time a man comes stumbling into their camp, lost, disoriented and muttering about lights in the sky.
Before long, these old friends will be plunged into the most remarkable events of their lives as they struggle with a terrible creature from another world. Their only chance of survival is locked in their shared past - and in the Dreamcatcher.

    Missing the zing!
Not the usual King's style. Narration could have been more intriguing. little disappointed with the experience.
    This wasn't a book I enjoyed
Would you try another book from Stephen King and/or Jeffrey DeMunn?
Absolutely I have read many Stephen King books & listened to some to one he read 'Bag of Bones' & loved it, I listen to lots of books I have read & enjoyed over the years but I occasionally come across 1 I just can't get into. This was one of those
What do you think your next listen will be?
Ive already had lots since this & I'd love to listen to "The Stand" but for some reason I can't get it in Australia
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Mainly disappointment. This should have been a book I enjoyed
    Engrossing
Typical Stephen King book in that it builds and builds the suspense. Very enjoyable.
    Listen up
This is one of my favourite SK books. 4 friends do a brave, kind deed, defending a intellectually disabled boy being bullied. They become a tight group, complete with their own sayings and shared experiences. They grow up and it appears some bad s**t was coming their way and they need to deal with it. There's no religion in this one, some magic but not to the extent it can go in a SK novel. It's about a group of friends. It's about growing up together. It's about the possible end of the world. It's not too slow, no punches are pulled. The disabled guy is enabling and able - a nice change to many books if they even appear at all. Listen to it!
    A King Classic
No other author seems capable of merging horror, sci-fi and tales of ordinary folk as masterfully as Stephen King. If you have seen the film but not read the book (or listened to it) then I recomend that you do so today. You will not be dissapointed.

    Publisher: Freshwater Seas
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Horror
    Publisher's Summary:
"The Vacant Lot" by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman
From the time that the editor of Harper's Bazaar overlooked Freeman's cramped handwriting, difficult to read, and published the story "Two Old Lovers", Mary Wilkins Freeman never looked back. Her Vermont and Massachusetts background forms an important part of many of her stories. This story is both a ghost story and a mystery, and the mystery is as interesting as the ghost story. It is, quite literally, a matter of haunted ground, of old wrongs done, of old blood sunk in the earth that will not lie quiet. The listener, indeed, may also have a hard time lying quiet!
"On the Brighton Road" by Richard Middleton
Richard Barham Middleton was once known as a poet, having published two volumes of poetry in the early 1910s, but now is remembered for his ghost stories. His life was cut short by his own hand at the age of 29, before any of his work had been published. Friends, admirers, and family championed his work after his death, and it has continued to appear in anthologies. This story has a very subtle kind of horror to it. One figure is limping beside a lonely road; another, walking the same road, is down on his luck and with few prospects. They form a bond, and it turns out there is a very dark side to that bond - one that may reach past death itself!
"Sister Johanna" by Amelia B. Edwards
A woman looks on as her capricious young sister agrees to marry one man, and then runs away with his handsome younger brother. When the man she jilted returns after a long and mysterious absence, an even more mysterious meeting, in the dead of night, leaves the two women to wonder, and to mourn, for the rest of their lives. More a story of character than a story of terror, Amelia Edwards nevertheless does not fail to leave her listeners with a chill.

    Awesome
What did you like most about Blaze?
I loved Blaze himself, despite being a criminal he was at heart a good man and a victim of circumstances
What was one of the most memorable moments of Blaze?
Don't really want to say, it would spoil the book!
Which scene did you most enjoy?
    The ones with Joe
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes
    Any additional comments?
I loved this book. Stephen King at his best, despite what his introduction said. I thoroughly enjoyed this one.
    Didn't finish
I did stick to this as hard and for as long as I could, about two thirds. I know it's not supposed to be one of Steven King's best, but it's really awful. I can't believe he let it be published, it is an embarrassment to him. The Characters are painful, and I just couldn't get in to it.
    Brilliant King
The tension buildup never let's up. My mental comparisons with Of Mice and Men (Steinbeck ) adding to the horror ride as I know from Cujo that King is not afraid to kill off the most innocent. The narrator' s mellifluous voice excellent, especially for the persistent George. The environment and weather adding their delisiously dastardly elements in true King style. I wanted so much to take Blaze and Joe into my arms and make it all go away, to leap into the story and be the white knight (female equivalent ) who would destroy King's relentless flood of ka. If he can sometimes enter his own creation, why not I? I listened to this audiobook at 90% speed so as to relish the words and conjured images more delectably. Nice, very nice. Satisfaction (the Stones were wrong).

Great Classic Ghost Stories with a Good Narrator!
I love classic ghost stories, and this collection does not dissapoint! Richard Pasco does a good job narrating, acting out voices very well. One story has him doing a creepy raspy voice, which I thought fit the character perfectly. If you like these old ghost stories like I do, definitely purchase this collection - there's a good variety of different authors and something to satisfy everyone's tastes. Highly recommended - get this one!

If you could sum up Classic Ghost Stories 1 in three words, what would they be?
Well read and concise range of chilling classic ghost stories. Not too gory just creepy and spine chilling.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Classic Ghost Stories 1?
I loved the Saki tale which was great antidote to the creepy tales.
What does Richard Pasco bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
A great narrator can make or break a reading. Mr Pasco is a A1 narrator and will look out for other readings by him.
    OK.

    Language: English
    Release date: 10-24-06

    Publisher's Summary:
Lisey knew there was a dark place where her husband ventured to face his demons. Boo'ya Moon is what Scott called it ¿ a realm that both terrified and healed him, that could eat him alive or give him the ideas he needed to write and live. Now it's Lisey's turn to face her husband's demons. And what begins as a widow's effort to sort through her husband's effects becomes a perilous journey into the heart of darkness.
    Critic Reviews:
"Stephen King at his finest...a dazzling novel." (Nicholas Sparks)
"In Lisey's Story, Stephen King makes bold, brilliant use of his satanic storytelling gift, his angelic ear for language, and above all his incomparable ability to find the epic in the ordinary." (Michael Chabon)
"Lisey's Story is bright and brilliant. It's dark and desperate. While I'll always consider The Shining, my first ride on King's wild Tilt-A-Whirl, a gorgeous, bloody jewel, I found, on this latest ride, a treasure box heaped with dazzling gems. A few of them have sharp, hungry teeth." (Nora Roberts)
    Members Reviews:
    Unfortunately not what was expected
This book gets a 2.5 rating from me. While the blurb does not lie in what the book entails, I was expecting a more conventional horror story of a woman's journey into a dark realm. I was disappointed when I realized a third of the way into the book that it is the story of a widow's journey to find closure in the years following her husband's death. While this journey is metaphorical and literal, it is not what was expected.
I found the majority of the story boring and uncompelling. Having said that, it wouldn't be a King book without it's charms. As one reads further into the book, it is clear that this is the husband, Scott's story as much as it is Lisey's. I was moved by a few moments, particularly Scott on his deathbed and his final goodbye in the form of a last manuscript written to Lisey. These moments are to be applauded because right from the very start, we know Scott is dead already. The way King makes us feel for a character that is only fleshed out through flashbacks and thoughts is quite something.
Mare Winningham's narration is fantastic. She breathes life into all the characters and does a superb job of protraying Lisey especially.
This is probably a book more for the ladies. It was ok, but not what I'm used to from King. I took a chance. It kind of fell through. Take from this review what you will. But you may enjoy it more than I did.
    Stephen King's Best
    Any additional comments?
I'm not a fan of horror fiction but I appreciate good writing and Stephen King's writing prowess truly shines through in this book. The relationship between Lisey and husband Scott is romanticised but the tender moments between them are extraordinarily moving. The real tour de force of characterisation is the expose of relationships between Lisey and her sisters. The sister are three of the most real characters I've found in King's books and there's nothing romanticised about them. Oddly enough the weakest part of the story is the supposed horror sections with the 'long boy'. They're rather clunky. For me the real horror was the backstory dealing with Scott's father.
