    Title: Cell
    Author: Stephen King
    Narrator: Campbell Scott
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 27 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-03-06
    Publisher: Hodder Headline Limited

    Genres: Fiction, Horror
    Publisher's Summary:
The event became known as The Pulse. The virus was carried by every cell phone operating within the entire world. Within hours, those receiving calls would become insane, or die.
In Boston, a young artist, Clayton Riddell, flees the explosive heart of the city. Clay's son has a little red cell phone. Often out of juice. But what if this time the battery is full? Clay has to reach his son, before his son reaches for his phone....
Who doesn't have a cell phone? This utterly gripping, gory, and fascinating novel doesn't ask the question 'Can you hear me now?' It answers it with a vengeance. High concept, ingenious, and terrifying: Cell is the perfect nightmare for a whole new generation of Stephen King listeners.
    Critic Reviews:
"King's imagining of what is more or less post-Armageddon Boston is rich, and the sociological asides made by his characters along the way...are jaunty and witty." (Publishers Weekly)

    Excellent
What did you love best about Cell?
I enjoyed the concept of cell phones being the catalyst to an apocalyptic new world. I also enjoyed the development of the relationships between the survivors and the extreme steps they were willing to take for each other.
What did you like best about this story?
I actually enjoyed the ending, there is just enough to give closure while leaving it open to your own imagination to decide the next chapter for the character. I think this is fairly typical King.
What does Campbell Scott bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I think Campbell Scott did an excellent job of bringing the characters to life and giving you an emotional connection to them. I thought his narration was spot on, not overly dramatic and quite calming to listen to.
    Any additional comments?
I quite enjoyed is audiobook, both the story and the narration. I'd certainly purchase more books by both of them, it was a great use of a credit.
    Well worth it!
What other book might you compare Cell to and why?
Cell is in the Genre of Zombie books and Post Apocaliptic. What would happen if everyone that was on a cell phone right now just went crazy?
What aspect of Campbell Scott???s performance would you have changed?
I found it a little hard to get used to the tone of his voice initially but once I had settled into that he was able to portray the characters with consistancy and humanity. I enjoyed listening.
    Any additional comments?
King has entered into this subject before in his book 'The Stand' which was a personal favourite of mine so I wasn't sure how this would stand up (pardon the pun) but it is a completly new angle and was great to listen to with modern eyes in a society of relience on Cell Phones. Again King's insight into the human mind is what make his books always enjoyable to read/listen to.
    Interesting and Engaging
This is the first Stephen King book I have listened to and I found it very engaging and enjoyable. I have a soft in my heart for apocalyptic story lines and Cell delivers on this score.
I had previously read Stephen King's 'The Stand' in hardcover and was initially worried that like that title the book would take a long time to recount backstory. This was not true of 'Cell' at all and the action starts within a few pages.

He takes us back in time to his own mortal youth in the magnificent city of Babylon. In a time of bloody wars and religious upheavals, he falls victim to a royal plot compounded by his devotion to his Hebrew God - only to be plucked from death by evil priests and sorceresses and transformed into a genii commanded to do their bidding.
Challenging these forces of destruction, Azriel embarks on his perilous journey through time - from Babylon's hanging gardens, to Europe during the black Death, to Manhattan in the 1990s - and ultimately to his crucial confrontation with the twentieth-century embodiment of all that he has struggled against.

A fresh take on cosmic horror....
A Victorian Englishman summons a strange puppet-like being to an old Colonial Inn. A doctor returns from the Great War and discovers a mysterious naked woman at the edge of the Atlantic.
A contemporary collector of arcane books retraces the steps of these other men - adventurers who sought out the mysteries of neighboring dimensions.
In The Sea of Ash, Scott Thomas takes us along as three men from three different centuries experience the wonders and horrors of an unknown New England.
Never had the universe felt so vast, and I so small within it. I had, through circumstance, been made aware of something, but of what? Something either too horrible or too beautiful for humans to know.
    Members Reviews:
Simply the best book I've listened to in years.
Where does The Sea of Ash rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Absolutely at the top. This story grabbed me from the first chapter and then kept my attention throughout. It is the most wonderful and imaginative thing I've "read" in years.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Sea of Ash?
The book is set up as little vignettes told chapter by chapter. So, even though you're listening to a narrative strung throughout, each chapter acts as its own little adventure. There is literally some new and memorable moment in every chapter, but for me, nothing will beat the doctor dropping a sinker tied to fishing line through a dimensional hole in a dead baby's face... Or the narrator visiting the Spirito Macchina... or the tiny lump that begins growing in the center of Doctor Pond's chest... or, or, or...
Which character as performed by Leeman Kessler was your favorite?
Definitely Vincent Banchini. Leeman's entire performance is nothing short of stellar, but he seems to have mentally cast Patrick Warburton as Banchini, and it is a thing of hilarious beauty.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Not only did I want to, I actually DID, and when I was finished, I listened to it all over again.
    Any additional comments?
This story is a treasure, a wonder, a gift from its creators to the world. Thomas wrote something weird and wonderful, full of characters with unique voices, and Kessler met the challenge head on. This was a match made in heaven. I can't wait for the movie!
    really enjoyed
I think Fractured Harry would be a good focus for a collection of short stories.
    Fantastic wierd fiction
I really enjoyed this short work. it was clearly influenced by some of the greats of weird fiction / Victorian ghost stories / cosmic horror (i.e. Lovecraft, James, Etc.) without being just another pastiche. there are a number if very arresting and unsettling images found throughout and it is all tied together nicely at the end. Highly recommended and an author to keep an eye on

A collection of 12 short horror stories.
Virtual Reality is explored in "Carnage". A twist on Zombies in the "Zombies Tale". A beast bursts from an ancient Indian Totem pole in "Totem". Demonic possession causes terror in "Thou Shalt Kill". In "Homo Sanguinis", and "the Hellion", different names for creatures based on history and current trends is explored.
Aliens, Vampires, even the Men in Black are thought to be the result of these creatures that are part of the Hominid family. Earthlings just like us, but they took a lightly different evolutionary path. Even a classic werewolf appears to cause terror in the bower beast.
The stories are, in a large part, set in and around my home city of Sheffield, England. An ancient City. A city associated with steel, and cutlery. Now its spooky side is showing.

    Publisher's Summary:
From the best-selling author of The Boy Who Drew Monsters and The Stolen Child comes a modern take on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice - a suspenseful tale of romance and enchantment.
In the Old City of Québec, Kay Harper falls in love with a puppet in the window of the Quatre Mains, a toy shop that is never open. She is spending her summer working as an acrobat with the cirque while her husband, Theo, is translating a biography of the pioneering photographer Eadweard Muybridge. Late one night, Kay fears someone is following her home. Surprised to see that the lights of the toy shop are on and the door is open, she takes shelter inside.
The next morning Theo wakes up to discover his wife is missing. Under police suspicion and frantic about her disappearance, he obsessively searches the streets of the Old City. Meanwhile, Kay has been transformed into a puppet, and is now a prisoner of the back room of the Quatre Mains, trapped with an odd assemblage of puppets from all over the world who can only come alive between the hours of midnight and dawn. The only way she can return to the human world is if Theo can find her and recognize her in her new form. So begins a dual odyssey of a husband determined to find his wife and of a woman trapped in a magical world where her life is not her own.
    Members Reviews:
Very good blend of fantasy and realism, with interesting subthemes
Newlyweds Theo and Kay become separated very early in the story when Kay, an acrobat in a street circus, wanders down a street in the oldest part of Quebec City late at night and enters a toy store that, after being closed whenever she passed it, is now mysteriously openânot a wise move, as any experienced fantasy reader would knowâand suddenly finds herself transformed into a puppet. Alternate chapters thereafter recount Kayâs adventures among the other puppets in the storeâs back room and Theoâs attempt to find his missing wife, helped at times by Egon, another member of Kayâs circus troupe, and Mitchell, a fellow professor at the college where Theo teaches.
The author does a good job of balancing the fantasy of Kayâs half of the story with the realism of Theoâs, which reads like a conventional find-the-missing-woman suspense thriller. Both halves definitely held my interest, though I liked Kayâs story the better of the two; the assorted puppets were quite striking characters, more so than either Theo or Kay at times. The writing is excellent.
The book also has several intriguing sub-themes. One is the parallels between Theo and Kayâs story and the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, prefigured by the quotation at the beginning of the novel. The second involves pioneer photographer Eadweard Muybridge, whose stop-motion photos of animals in action and people, often naked, performing simple activities were a key forerunner of movies. Theo is translating a book about Muybridge during the course of the story, and he and the author think a lot about the idea that stopping motion photographically is equivalent to stopping time: âEach moment [is] part of a series, yet separate and complete somehow, the motion but an illusion, the way to mark time.â Muybridge himself even occasionally appears, as either a flashback or a hallucination in the distraught Theoâs mind.

Great for the Nick Blinko fan!
If you're a die hard Nick Blinko fan, this is definitely a must buy. Unfortunately, this only seems to be available on Crna Hronika's Facebook page or on eBay for an overly inflated price, so I'm lucky I got this on Amazon when I did. The illustrations are beautiful, but this isn't "written" or drawn in a traditional story book manner...it's basically a bunch of illustrations inspired by the story. This will make a great collector's item and coffee book.
    Five Stars

    Title: Chilling Ghost Stories

    Narrator: Andrew Sachs
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 59 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-01-12
    Publisher: Audible Studios

    Genres: Fiction, Horror
    Publisher's Summary:
Andrew Sachs reads these four classic stories of suspense - "The Signalman" by Charles Dickens, "The Haunted Doll's House" by M. R. James, "The Room in the Tower" by E. F. Benson, and "The Bus-Conductor" by E. F. Benson. These spine-tingling tales, from the golden age of the ghost story, are sure to leave you with a creeping sense of dread.
"The Signalman" relates the tale of a terrified railway worker, troubled by a dark foreboding. In "The Haunted Doll's House", when Mr Dillet buys a miniature Gothic manor from an antiques dealer, he has no idea of the horrific drama that will be played out within its walls. "The Room in the Tower" tells of a young man haunted by a recurring nightmare about the sinister Stone family and their tower room. But is it merely a dream, or a premonition? And in "The Bus-Conductor", Hugh Grainger explains to a ghost-seeking friend his theory regarding the supernatural - and recounts his own unsettling experience....
    Members Reviews:
    Delightfully spine-tingling!
I had read or listened to this quartet of stories before, but I found Andrew Sachs really brought a new dimension to them. I enjoyed every minute and am going to look for more of his narrations. Before this, I'd only associated him with "Fawlty Towers," so I've been missing out!
E.F. Benson's "The Room in the Tower" appears fully unabridged. In some other editions, said to be unabridged, all the details do not appear. Since it's such a perfect jewel of a story, it is best heard as it is here. It is so creepy, that when I first read it, I was afraid to go to sleep, not for fear of what might happen, but of what I might dream.
James' "Haunted Doll House" centers on a collector's joy at a wonderful acquisition: a miniature mansion, six feet of Strawberry Hill Gothic beauty. It's all too perfect...until you turn out the lights.
"The Signalman" and "The Bus Conductor" are great stories, too.
Four Classic Ghost Stories Excellently Read!
Although short, with only four stories, this is a very good collection of ghost stories! The narrator, Andrew Sachs, does a good job reading these classics. He has a raspy voice that really lends to the atmosphere of the tales. The Room in the Tower really stood out to me in this collection - I don't know if it was the way Sachs read it, but I'd never had such a good visualization of that story before. If you're looking to pick up something quick but good, check this one out!
Four classic tales that retain the power to chill.
Would you listen to Chilling Ghost Stories again? Why?
I bought this collection even though I had read each of the tales more than once before getting the audio version. Ghost stories, especially ones as well-written as these, are better when read aloud.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Chilling Ghost Stories?

When Henry was a child, something terrible happened in the woods behind his home, something so shocking he could only express his terror by drawing pictures of what he had witnessed. Eventually, Henry's mind blocked out the bad memories, but he continued to draw, often at night by the light of the moon.
Twenty years later, Henry makes his living by painting his disturbing works of art. He loves his wife and his son, and life couldn't be better...except there's something not quite right about the old stone farmhouse his family now calls home. There's something strange living in the cramped cellar, in the maze of pipes that feed the ancient steam boiler.
A winter storm is brewing, and soon Henry will learn the true nature of the monster waiting for him down in the darkness. He will battle this demon and, in the process, he may discover what really happened when he was a child - and why, in times of trouble, he thinks: I paint against the darkness.
But will Henry learn the truth in time to avoid the terrible fate awaiting him...or will the thing in the cellar get him and his family first?
Written as both a meditation on the art of creation and as an examination of the secret fears we all share, The Painted Darkness is a terrifying look at the true cost we pay when we run from our grief - and what happens when we're finally forced to confront the monsters we know all too well.

    Page-turner story about creativity's demons!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Fascinating if twisted tale about the (sometimes scary) creative impulse that resides in all of us. Really enjoyed the narration-Alex captures the protagonist's emotions so realistically, I never doubted he was experiencing every moment of the story himself. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a perfect marriage of fear and soul-searching!
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Painted Darkness?
The scene when Henry battled the monster in his basement.
Which character as performed by Alexander MacDonald was your favorite?
    The protagonist, Henry.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When Henry reconciled with his father.
A perfect creepy tale with an amazing narrator!
What did you love best about The Painted Darkness?
The Painted Darkness is an easy to listen to, fascinating story. The narrator is pitch-perfect and it feels like the narrator teamed up with the author to give everything a cohesive feel that is sometimes missing from audiobooks. I found myself replaying this adventure in my head long after it was over. The quiet terror of the story was an absolute joy to listen to.
What about Alexander MacDonalds performance did you like?
I've never heard anything by Alexander McDonald before, but I know for sure I will.

    Loved it! Be warned
Loved it! Be warned, It is for a certain type of reader. Not for the faint of heart or easily offended. Yes his books are very raw but they are much more than that. They ( and I have several) all have a great story to tell. This story tells of something that we all would like to see, good manners in our fellow human beings. And yes when we are disrespected sometimes we would like to "teach them a lesson in good manners". Paul does just that! I would and have recommended it some of my fellow readers. I recommend you give it a try...if you dare.
I can't get enough of these books..
These books have warning written on the cover for a reason. Most people can't handle such extreme graphic stuff that Matt Shaw puts out, and as a person that watches a lot of horror and loves the gory stuff, I can honestly say I cannot get enough of Matt Shaw and his books. They're extremely disgusting and horrific but I am drawn to it. I love the gory details and it keeps me wanting more!
    Matt Shaw does it again
A man whose had enough hours on a killing spree. We've all felt like teaching manners to rude people who hasn't? Taking revenge plus twists only Matt Shaw can provide this story rocks. I highly recommend this book to all fan's of modern horror
    Another twisty success
What a tale, I never suspected the intensity and the twisted plot. Manners are a engrained into some people and either never taught to or just ignored by others. This story had plenty going on for such a short and makes me feel like some people should never skip their medication, yikes! As always, I recommend Shaw to all fans of modern horror!
    Just ok
Ok,Shaw,s getting to predictable.Read a bunch of his books.Time to move on.
