Moving: autistic isolation to family integration

An informative, interesting and ultimately very moving account from the perspective of the father (Alex) of an autistic child (Sam). We see the frustrations and challenges of the parents and the resultant relationship strains. We feel the pain, anger and guilt that accompany the nurturing of a seemingly unresponsive and 'disruptive' child... would we cope any better?

Interesting insights and strategies re managing children on the spectrum are peppered across the text, identifying mechanisms through which to facilitate communication, achievement and satisfaction, building on strengths, identifying and controlling some of the triggers to the child's isolation and frustration.

Alex is a distant and perhaps selfish father, unable to find the means of communicating with his son... until he discover's Sam's brilliance in playing an online game Minecraft. This game and Alex' slowly developing understanding and respect for eight-year old Sam, is central to this story. Alex himself had a traumatic youth having lost his older brother in a tragic traffic event while both were still at school. We experience also the pain of not having dealt with prior traumas and of the lasting strain this places on daily life.The route to improved outcomes in this troubled family is the discovery of the computer game that requires agility, planning, strategy and more - this becomes the vehicle for the all important lines of communication between father and son.

This is a fascinating, engaging and very moving book. It's well written and sensitively narrated. While I never stopped and rewound the audio to contemplate how beautifully a sentence was crafted or an idea conveyed, it is certainly a compelling end enjoyable read. Step out of your comfort zone and into a set of troubled relationships, frustrations and difficulties for a while.

Spoiler alert ... many of the frustrations, challenges and losses come right in the end.... While this might not reflect much of real-life, it is a tonic and feel-good outcome to the understandable daily tensions and strains.

I had never heard of this author and chose this as on Richard and Judy bookclub.

Quick Read

Perhaps I didn't read closely enough, but for some reason this was listed in with other non-fiction titles when I bought it. It is a work of fiction, and believable, but the characters are fleshed out enough for the reader to find any real attachment to them as people. Good exposition of the role of Navy Corpsmen who serve with the Marines and the trials they face on a daily basis.

Combat Corpsman

I thought that the story of our corpsman was outstanding. Having been in the Military for almost 30 years I could

see how real the story was.

Good Read...

I enjoyed the book. I am a Paramedic that served in Afghanistan as a civilian, and my son is a FMF Corpsman that served in Iraq and is now a Paramedic and an Infantry Officer in the NG. I especially enjoyed the reference to the "Hospitalers" and their history as healing warriors. Good read.

One combat medic to another

I've read a few books on combat the last few years, but never read of a combat medic. My war was 45 years ago, things kind of popped as I read this. Good or bad we made the right choice, for all we served. God rest those who didn't make it home.

Heroes of the battlefield

As a former Marine, too little has been written about our combat corpsmen. Every one of them (Corpsmen) are heroes. The book gives us insight into how Marines instantly take to bringing in Naval Corpsmen to their brotherhood. The bond is cemented when bullets fly and their is someone out there who does everything in their power and training to save lives.

Army medics are of course in the same category.

Great Audiobook

Really good audiobook. The narrator does a great job of bringing each of the wonderful characters, and thus the story, to life. Magical! :)

Awesome

It was amazing I loved the humour in it and the topics it discusses are explained well. I would recommend this to anyone who likes reading humorous stories but with mentioning some dark topics. I would have to say my favourite part is the ending that is the most hilarious part but you only get it if you listen to the entire thing. Enjoy!!

And the point of the story was??????

I found this book to be cleverly written. It contained a couple of aha moments along with some genuine humor. In my mind's eye I could easily see each and every character along with each setting. Oh how I would love to find a welcome seat in Lala's garden! But for me the story lacked a punch. I kept searching for a plot . . . a reason for the story. All I could find was a rather ordinary tale.

Engaging Book

This novel had a slow start but I'm glad I kept reading. The heroine, Natalie Goldberg, is an engaging character. Her interactions with coworkers are often hilarious and some times touching. It's a perfect summer read.

Sweet story. A bit predictable.

Great book for reading groups

The story of a woman who leaves New York for Macon, GA to run away from her past and start a new future, this novel has a little bit of everything including a wonderful ending. The writing style flows consistently and is scattered with witty and funny observations of people in the south. The plot moves along and does not drag at any point in the story, which is uncommon for most writers. Also, the book is long enough to tell a complicated tale but short enough to keep interest, as any book should be. After reading Eat, Pray, Love, the author reminded me of Elizabeth Gilbert and is similarly engaging. Both authors are excellent at self-deprecating humor and at pointing out quirks in themselves and others. Altogether a wonderful beach book or light summer reading. Not epic by any means, but not every novel has to be The Fountainhead to be good.

Excellent character study

I started reading this book in the evening and didn't put it down until I had finished it at 5 am.

A splendid surprise!

I decided to read this book in order to improve my knowledge of Italian. Never did I expect to find the likes of Wuthering Heights. I could not stop reading it!

Nice book

I liked the book overall but did not like the ending plot which to me was very unrealistic in our times.

Brilliant

I couldn't put it down. Superb. I found myself absorbed in the story from the first page to the last.

I can't recommend this book enough for anyone interested in how fundamentalism ...

One of the most powerful books I've read in a long time. Set in Nigeria amidst militant extremism, corruption, and civil war- this book was so much more eye opening than a newspaper article. I can't recommend this book enough for anyone interested in how fundamentalism spreads and poisons.

I loved this novel

It was,a hard book in ways, because the situations are real and the struggles are true. West Africa is hard to capture, because for Westerners rarely catch all the facets. This Nigerian man has written a superb story that rings true, and will definitely educate all who read it. I loved this novel.

This story will stay with you

It was difficult to put this book down although parts of it were quite disturbing. Very well-written; good character development; an effective voice for a way of life that is so different from ours. The every day violence and disregard for life is difficult to understand, but this book makes you think about it in a new way.

Any additional comments?

I am not surprised that this novel has been nominated for so many prizes. If you like historical novels that cover big themes (racism, slavery, inter-racial relationships, misogyny, evolution, Darwinism, family loyalty, cultural supremacy, the failure of American healthcare systems, criminal justice etc) then this is a story worth investing in. It is a long book and I managed to listen to it in big chunks which really helped to get me hooked.

Set against the world of horse breeding and racing in Kentucky this is the story of the rich, white Forge family. When a young mixed-race ex convict arrives in their lives and proves himself to be an expert handler of their prize racehorse, he ruffles feathers and piques interest in more ways than one. Thus he and the Forge family are set on a path to mutual destruction and lost opportunities.

A masterclass of writing and sympathetic narration. I will definitely listen to this again.

Gone With the Wind meets Moby Dick and Deadwood

At 600 pages. Unlikely. Best read slowly, since it contains many interludes and usually beautiful diversions.

Epic. beautifully written.

Wow. that's all I managed to say as the recording ended. so much to process and take in. beautifully written. so eloquent. Like poetry in parts. What a story and so wonderfully woven together.

Fun story and great narration

This was a fun story. I have never read anything by this author before but will definitely read more. The narrator was great. The voices were fun, and each one was distinct. I love that the narrator was able to do so many voices, and each interpretation was so interesting and unique. Definitely plan on reading more from this narrator and author.
