Two Light Horror Tales for the Price of One

Evans Light may not be the most prolific horror writer on Amazon, but he's among the most versatile. Within the broad category of horror, his tales run the gamut from twistedly funny to claustrophobia inducing. In his latest story, "Dark Curtains," he manages to pull off a seemingly impossible feat of giving readers two remarkably different experiences arising from one single story.

There's a twist to "Dark Curtains" and it's no spoiler to reveal it. The story actually has two different endings, written at different times. According to Light, he thought of the story as a complete work, ending and all, but when he showed it around, people suggested he change it. But, he liked the original ending as well and wound up including both of them in this volume. Like a DVD with alternate endings, readers can decide which they like best.

"Dark Curtains" is an old fashioned ghost story. James and Claire, a young couple, move into a large old house that was across the street from the house in which James lived as a child. When he was young, Sophie, the daughter of the couple who lived there, died under tragic circumstances. Now, the couple is willing to sell the house to the adult James at a very reasonable price. James and Sophie shared a history, and, as you might guess, strange things begin happening in the house and James feels the spirit of Sophie is still there.

Light sets up the right spooky but not outright scary atmosphere in the house as James is inexorably drawn to the upstairs room where Sophie lived. Claire feels it as well, and there's a lot of erotic tension and rivalry present. Light ratchets up the tension gradually, even though this is a fairly short novelette, until ... well, actually until two very different things happen, depending on which ending you read. The real beauty of this story is the fact that it reads equally well, equally logically, and equally dramatically with either ending, even though the feelings the reader has at the end are completely different.

I'm usually hesitant about giving a very high review to a short piece on Amazon that the author charges for because some readers may object to paying money for a short, stand-alone work. In this case, however, the book works best as a fairly short work because readers can better appreciate the subtlety of Light's writing and the impact the alternate endings have. In some cases, an alternate ending to a story might be a gimmick; here, it's a way (or, more precisely, two ways) of demonstrating Light's considerable story telling talents.

It's curtains for their love.

First off, let me apologize for that title. I simply couldn't resist. This was a free download. The short story also appears in the anthology, Screamscapes.

It feels like a lucky day when the old couple offers James the house he always admired as a child. Their daughter had been his best friend until her tragic accident. Now they are letting him have the house for a steal with the only condition being that he doesn't get rid of the curtains in the tower room. It seems like a dream come true until strange things start to occur after he moves in with his girlfriend.

The story was creepy and well written.

Some Ghoulishly Write Stuff

When reading some of the better selling books on Amazon, I sometimes ask myself just how in the world they became best sellers. Now, Evans Light, one of the better young horror writers on Amazon, has come up with an answer in "Whatever Possessed You." But I have a feeling that Light's "solution," entertaining as it is to read, is not one that most aspiring writers are going to want to try.

Gerard Faust (apt name) is just such a would-be writer, a college professor who quit his day job to work on the great American novel. He was lucky enough to get an advance from a publisher, but the deadline to deliver is fast approaching and Gerard has a massive case of writer's block. Then one day, when he visits an old book store, a man asks him to read a few lines on a piece of paper. Gerard reads aloud what at first seems to be gibberish and that proves to be a big mistake.

Soon, Gerard starts writing again, and it's a case of supernatural good news/bad news. The good news is that the book is getting finished in record time. The bad news is that Gerard is definitely not feeling himself anymore; in fact, when he looks in the mirror, he sees something else in his eyes. And the words that are going down on paper seem to have a life of their own. Needless to say, this doesnât bode well for his mental state or his relationship with his wife.

âWhatever Possessed Youâ is one of Evans Lightâs more playful works, with a lot of his ghoulish dark humor on display here. The first part of the book is played rather straight, but as Gerard finally figures out what readers probably guessed in the first few pages, the style becomes breezier, even though what goes on gets darker. But what really makes the story stand out, in my view, is the literary angle. Stories about guys going off the deep end are a dime a dozen on Amazon, but one that ties these mental problems into the creative process arenât nearly as common. And Light offers his own explanation as to what makes a successful writer; it all depends on his inspiration.

âWhatever Possessed Youâ is a 50-page novelette, so Light has to move things along fairly quickly, which means he canât turn Gerardâs breakdown into a truly terrifying process a la Jack Nicholson in âThe Shiningâ (I confess I thought of that movie while I read this), but itâs entertaining enough for a quick read. And Light does finish the story off with a terrific punch line delivered by a secondary character. I donât really want to think too much about whatever possessed Light to write this storyâ but readers will be glad he did.

He wrote like a man possessed. Sonia began to worry.

Delightfully Disturbing

4.5 Stars. Where do I even begin with this? So the author warns all readers in the beginning of the violence, sexual nature and gore and if you don't like these things don't read the book. Well I am not one of these people I like all of those things I however did not realize the degree of them! The Rakasha demon..she crazy!! The opening story of a biker who encounters the Rakasha left me with my jaw on the floor. Next was the longer stories of the origins of the demon and what not. I was glued to the stories wanting to know more yet I was freaked out and mortified at times as well. Chapter 8 is perhaps one of the most disgusting things I've ever read but it was extremely good as well!

The author can write. The stories tell very well of the history of this demon and what it's capable of. The author did an excellent job in the creation of this tale and his brutal and gory details will leave even the most proclaimed horror junkies shocked and at times grossed out. Believe me I take nothing away from it, it's a great tale but I just cannot stress the violence that this book presents. Truly something Ive never quite read before. I highly recommend this book to those who have the stomachs for it and for those who think they can't be scared or totally grossed out. Read this book and tell me it doesn't leave you somewhat scarred on the inside. To the author Robert Davis, I mean that last line in all good faith! Rakasha means for a great read.

Epic begining for a new author

I downloaded this book on one of its free days but I would say it is definitely worth paying for. This book is a short collection of different people's encounters with the Rakasha demon. This creature is a combination of a tiger and a human woman with a taste for human flesh. The book starts with one of these creatures in its own habitat in India but when this creature finds a way to get her offspring out into the world, the once small population grows and attracts hunters.

I always love a good, dark book and this one had all of the elements I love. Demons, horror, and a touch of sensuality. (Maybe more than a touch)

I was drawn to the portrayal of a different kind of demon that many, if not most people, have never heard of and I have to give props to the author for that. It was a daring subject and I think it's paying off.

I will look forward to future books and short stories by Robert Davis

Blood, beasts and bad attitudes make a pleasing comeback

Most people who know me suspect there's something deeply wrong with me. When given the choice between reading an uplifting tale of hope and love, or reading something terrifying and/or blood-splattered, I'll take the ghosts and gore nearly every time. That's somewhat problematic of late, as the pickings have been slim for such content.

I haven't read all of Mr. Wedel's books yet but I have read several and this is my favorite so far! All the stories are unique and creative. There is only one story in this whole collection I wasn't crazy about but his storytelling is vivid and enticing. I highly recommend this read!

Williams does a fantastic job weaving developed

S. Williams does a fantastic job weaving developed, well-balanced characters into supernatural circumstances. It's a rare suspense novel where the supernatural elements are organic, never forced. The Biblical themes and characters add a wholly creepy dimension to the book, as someone who despises organized religion in all forms, it was refreshing to explore Biblical themes without ever feeling "preached at". In a cultural as deeply rooted in Christianity as America, the way Mr. Williams explores demonology in a modern context in compelling and unsettling. I strongly recommend this cerebral, white-knuckle novel.

New Fan !

Jolie, a college student trying to finish her thesis and graduate, heads to Follete to find out the strange occurances that had been happening there . To her, things like ghosts, and such doesn't exist until she experiences it herself. And even then she still doesn't want to believe.

I have to admit I was on the fence when it came to how I felt about Jolie, she came across as a spoiled brat but I am happy to say that she grew through out the book and by the end I really liked her and understood why she was the way she was.

I also can say I was totally taken off guard with the two guys actually three guys who seemed smitten with Jolie. I didn't expect it to go the way it did and I did like the fact the author teased me with which one would it be. My personal favorite didn't win the girl but I still didn't mind who she did end up with.

The story was filled with twists and turns and just when I thought I had figured it all out, the author changed it up on me. I want to thank the author for this, because sometimes its irritating to figure out the mystery almost at the beginning of the story.

I highly recommend this book for you Urban Fantasy lovers out there. I know I will be reading more from Monique in the future.

Grabbed my attention from the very first chapter!

Becoming Jolie grabbed my attention from the very first chapter. With an intriguing mystery fueling the heroine's journey, Monique O'Connor James was able to keep me engaged the whole way through.

Jolie goes to Follette to finish her thesis for her Master's degree, but soon the mystery she goes there to unravel takes over her life, revealing things about her past that turns her world upside-down.

The interesting love triangle formed between Jolie and the brothers (naughty Jolie!) drew me in, even though I favored one brother over the other. Everyone has a few indulgences that must be allowed, and James's love triangle certainly sated my need.

James writes a compelling and interesting novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat for the whole ride.

Great book!

I liked this story a lot. It was sort of mysterious and a bit suspenseful, sweet and romantic all in one. The story seemed like something that could actually have happened in real life; though the `black market adoptions' is real, unfortunately. Finding out the truth behind the crimes happening in Follette, and that she was one of those `illegally adopted' babies turns her world upside down.

Why you should not sleep with your sister.

I felt this was a very creepy story. It was an child abduction story with a few twists. This could have easily been extended into a full length novel. I kind of wish it was. It is not so much scary as creepy. Without giving anything away I like the use of appliances in this.

The narrator did read fairly rapidly and I am not sure it was suppose to be or not. I gave him five stars, but would like to hear it again with the suspense more drawn out.

An Original Horror Tale

"Johnny Junk" starts like many supernatural horror stories. A phone call from someone who was believed to be gone from this world. But that's close to where familiarity will end for the reader.

In a small town where children have been disappearing, most of the parents have given up. Jim had too. Until he received a phone call from his daughter. A phone call that had a caller ID. A phone call from the residence of a local hermit nicknamed Johnny Junk. Soon a vigilante group of grieving and angry parents are on Johnny Junk's property. That's the start of an ever-building pile of secrets, traps, and strange that is this story.

The story pulls you in and gets you interested. Some of the characters are laid out in a no-nonsense list partway through, but this is a short novelette. Brian Knight wants to tell his story and keep his audience moving as fast as he can write.

The narrator does a great job of keeping this story moving at the ultra-speed it is meant to be read.

I recommend reading this or listening to it -- whichever with you feel more comfortable -- in one sitting.

The ending was mixed for me but still original. I love the duality of the title that will become apparent to the reader after they are done enjoying this tale.
